iPhone vs Palm Treo 680

With the annoucement of the Apple iPhone, many people have begun to comment on how it is going to affect other mobile phone manufacturers, and some have suggested that the iPhone just might be a "Treo killer". Treonauts has taken a great look debate by comparing the iPhone vs the Palm Treo 680.

Before even delving into what the Treonauts have shown this far, I'd like to make my own observation. Treos are marketed to and used primarily by business professionals. The iPhone is targeted more towards consumers, and younger ones at that. They aren't in the same class, so I don't even think there should be a question about their competition. Nevertheless, some think that the Treo will be an iPhone-killer.

Treonaut has also come to the conclusion that the iPhone is not going to be a Treo killer. They've based these opinions on the following:

  • Screen Resolution and Input Method: The iPhone lacks an actual keyboard. Treo-addicts might not be comfortable going keyboardless. However, this can't really be said yet because no one's gotten the chance to try out the new iPhone multi-touch screen keypad.
  • Operating Systems: The Palm OS has proven itself over generations of Treo devices. The MAC OS X platform has not yet proven itself on such a device.
  • Storage: iPhone has a preset amount of internal storage (4GB or 8GB). Treo users are familiar with external storage options via SD cards. SD cards allow storage capabilities to be expanded, and you can have multiple cards to use with the phone if one fills up.
  • GSM + Wireless Data + Camera: Apple wins out in this category, according to Treonaut. iPhones downside in this area, however is that the WiFi will drain the battery faster.
  • Battery: Both have similar talk time. However, unlike the the Treo, the iPhone battery is not removeable. Removeable batteries are enjoyed by those on the go.
  • The Treo weights about 15% more than the iPhone, but this is due to the keyboard, and Treonaut believes this is a good thing.

So those are the points that Treonaut makes. The iPhone is destined to be a smashing hit, but its not likely to make a huge dent in the business phone world. If you want to read the full discussion at Treonaut, head on over and read the post. They make some very good points.

Palm Treo 680 Smartphone for Cingular Wireless Announced

overview_680_photo.jpgThere is a lot to admire about the new Palm Treo 680 quad-band smartphone. It has a phone, along with email, instant messaging, and Bluetooth. In fact, the Exchange ActiveSync program is designed to synchronize your calendar, email, as well as your contacts. The Blazer 4.5 browser makes surfing the net super, super fast. Other software features include the use of Mircosoft Word and Excel, in addition to Adobe PDF files and Microsoft PowerPoint presentations. You can also use the new smartphone as a wireless modem, as Bluetooth 1.2 technology connects your laptop wirelessly to the net. All of that is with a color touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard. Not only that, it has a camera, camcorder, calendar, photo viewer, and can be used as both an MP3 and video player. Clearly, what is not to like?

Oh, I almost forgot to mention: for a limited time, the Palm Treo 680 will come with a music bundle from Yahoo Music, which includes a 30-day free trial to its music service. That means that for one month, you have the access to over one million songs, and you can take them with you.

The Palm Treo 680 isn’t the only reason that Palm Inc. is celebrating. The Palm Treo will operate on Cingular’s nationwide EDGE network, and will be available in time for the holidays. I have somewhat confused about the price. The Palm online store appears to be selling the Treo 680 with four new colors (crimson, copper, arctic, and graphite) for $399, but the lowest I’ve heard it being available is for $199.99. Whatever the price, it feels like a good deal overall. The smartphone is sweeping the mobile phone industry, and it is estimated that one out of every four mobile phones will be a smartphone by the next decade. Is it possible that the Palm Treo 680 Smartphone will be leading the way? I wouldn’t be surprised.

Treo 680 to be Official Soon

Treo 680 to be Official Soon?

When Palm announces a DigitalLife press conf on Oct 12 to unveil a new Treo product, you have to be on your toes. Well, evidently, in this case, it's not much of a surprise. It is highly likely that the new Treo will be none other than the Palm Treo 680.

We already saw the Treo 680 a while ago, when Palm slipped out promo pictures of the device (see Palm 680 Exclusive First Pic). And we also know that it will hit Cingular in the US (Palm Treo 680 for Cingular).

Of course, we are still wondering why Palm decided a VGA camera was sufficient on this one. Anyway, we are keeping our fingers crossed till October 12, 2006.

    With the introduction of the Palm Treo 680 smartphone, Palm is targeting new users in the rapidly growing smartphone and feature-phone markets. Market research firm In-Stat, estimates that 25 percent of all wireless handsets worldwide will be smartphones by 2011. Research conducted by Palm suggests a substantial population of feature-phone users have not purchased smartphones, fearing they were too expensive and too difficult to use. The Treo 680 will offer an affordable, simple and fun way to get started and stay connected.

    "The Treo 680 is the smartphone for everyone. It's small, sleek, fast and comes in a variety of fun colors," said Ed Colligan, president and chief executive officer of Palm, Inc. "It's a great phone design, great for messaging and email, and provides users easy and fast access to the Internet and to their favorite music and pictures, and makes it easy for people to manage and balance their business and personal lives while on the go."

    During a press conference at DigitalLife in New York City, the audience saw Palm's innovative hardware design and integrated, easy-to-use software. Known for ease of use, Palm differentiates the Treo 680 smartphone from others in the Treo family by offering the following features along with many additional enhancements:

    New Design

    The Treo 680 smartphone has an internal antenna and slim form factor, making the device smaller and sleeker than its Treo predecessors in the United States. It has a full, easy-type keyboard, perfect for writing SMS messages and emails, and an optimal 320x320 vibrant color screen for viewing web pages, photos, media and more.

    All-in-one, Smarter Phone

    The Treo 680 smartphone has a unique phone user interface that further simplifies Treo innovations, such as the ability to respond to calls with a preset text message and add new phone numbers to existing contact information, and three-way calling. The Treo 680 also has integrated email and web capabilities, so users can stay in touch with colleagues and friends. The messaging application on the Treo 680 displays text-messaging conversations as "threaded chats," similar to IM, so users can see their entire conversation with a particular person. The Treo 680 smartphone also can be used as an MP3 player and has an integrated digital camera, camcorder and video player.

    Additional Features

    The Treo 680 smartphone offers many additional features, including the following:

    Added memory: The Treo 680 smartphone includes 64MB of user-available storage, nearly three times the memory of the original Treo 650 smartphone. Customers can add up to 2GB of storage with expansion cards for those large music or video files (sold separately);
    Enhanced email and messaging: Exchange ActiveSync will now synchronize not only calendar and email, but contacts as well; SMS and MMS capabilities have been improved for a better user experience;
    Improved web browser: The Blazer 4.5 browser is superfast due to its smarter caching rules and includes alternate modes for viewing web pages optimized for the device or as a regular web page;
    Enhanced multimedia: Customers can use the Treo 680 smartphone to stream music, play MP3s and manage and share photo albums;
    Built-in dial-up networking (DUN) capabilities: Customers can use the new smartphone as a wireless modem via Bluetooth(R) wireless technology to connect to a compatible Bluetooth enabled laptop;
    Documents To Go: Customers can view, edit and share Microsoft Word and Excel documents on their Treo 680 smartphones in addition to viewing full-featured Adobe PDF files and Microsoft PowerPoint presentations; and
    Bluetooth 1.2: Customers can connect wirelessly to other Bluetooth enabled devices. The Treo 680 has improved car-kit and headset support, and support for multiple simultaneous Bluetooth connections.

    ----------------------------------

    Palm, which leaks secrets about as fast as a sieve, has let slip some promotional pictures of the Treo 680, their new low end PalmOS Treo, and man, does it look GOOD!!. So it may not have IR, and only a VGA camera, but no-one is going to be embarrassed to have this phone up against their ear!

    The photos, together with some new ones of a Cingular branded Treo 750v were available on Palm's PalmGear partner website here (but it has now gone).

It has been confirmed by industry insiders that the much talked about Treo 680 is the real thing and will be released for 20 networks worldwide. In the United States it shall be available on the Cingular Network and has already been spotted in the Cingular quarters undergoing tests. However the 680 feature set isn’t exactly stellar as there is no 3G capabilities, no infra-red and even the onboard camera is a pathetic VGA! When it comes to size this one would be akin to the Treo 750v and has 64MB RAM under its hood.

    Treo700wx From Sprint Announced

    Treo 700wx From Sprint Announced

    A quick official announcement from Sprint confirms that they will be carrying the Treo 700wx for their customers. It was earlier reported that the Treo 700wx would be announced by Sprint somewhere in the last week of August, but I guess it was delayed by a week.

    Just in case you forgot the phone specifications (hey, it can happen - especially if you are in the habit of reading gadget blogs daily): it runs on an Intel XScale 312MHz processor powered by Windows Mobile 5.0. With 128MB NVRAM, the 700wx features an SDIO slot for expanding on the available memory.

    Compatible with dual-band EV-DO, the Treo 700wx features a large 240x240 pixel touchscreen LCD and full-fledged QWERTY keyboard. Bluetooth, Infrared and a 1.3 megapixel camera complete the package.

    More Treo750 Pics

    p7.jpgMore images of the Treo 750 equals to more fun! The internet these day is buzzing with leaked images and the Treo 750 is no exception! The first thing you notice is the lack of the famous Palm antenna. While it does bear a resemblance to all the previous Treo phones, the handset has been considerably slimmed down according to the grapevine. Other features would include; 1.3 mega pixel camera, SD card slot and according to the hyper active rumor mills it would be a Windows Mobile-based UMTS model.

    Palm Treo 750 Leaked Picture

    Palm%20Treo%20750%20leaked%20pic.jpg
    The folks at EverythingTreo.com have posted up a leaked picture of what looks to be the upcoming Treo 750 Smartphone. It looks like the 750 has a couple of noticeable changes including the removal of the antenna, a new color scheme, and what appears to be a side memory card slot.

    No timeline has been set for the 750 and no word on pricing either. Overall the physical changes appear to be evolutionary in design vs revolutionary in nature.

    Check out EverythingTreo.com for additional information about the Treo 750. Via Krunker.

    Treo 700p Smartphone

    Palm Treo 700p.jpg
    Get this Phone Now for the
    Best Price on the Internet!

    Palm, today unveiled perhaps the most anticipated smart phone, the Treo 700p, which comes as a huge relief for all the Treo users as it addresses the most significant complaints that people had with one of its predecessors, the Treo 650. With so much hype surrounding the launch of the Treo 700p, it doesn't disappoint me one bit with whatever info I've gathered so far. The Palm Treo 700p comes with hardware and software innovations centered around usability, connectivity, multimedia and compatibility. Also it is the first ever Palm OS CDMA-based Treo smartphone to offer the broadband like speeds of the EvDO (Evolution Data Optimized) network

    Like its predecessor the Treo 700p also runs on the same operating system, Palm OS 5 and both use the same general form factor, a 320-by-320-pixel screen above a miniature keyboard that makes writing emails easier and also what it means is a much better resolution than Windows Mobile 5.0 phones. Perhaps the most striking thing about the phone is that it does support EvDO, a standard that supports from 400Kbps-700Kbps data transfer speeds and the Treo 700p is backwards compatible with 1xRTT. You can also use your Palm Treo 700p as a Dial-Up Networking adaptor. Using a USB cable to your laptop or Blue-tooth connectivity, you can have high-speed browsing using your unlimited EvDO data plan.

    On the multimedia front, the phone features a 1.3 Mega-Pixel camera through which can send photos on the fly, no need to switch from the camera to the MMS or email application. Also the Treo 700p comes with its own multimedia application that supports both streaming audio and video called Pocket Tunes. The Treo 700p sports a new Pocket Tunes UI from Normsoft and the most interesting multimedia feature is support for streaming audio and video (Windows Media Player format including MPEG4, H.264, and others) which the Treo 650 lacked. It includes 128MB of memory out of which 60MB is user available. However users can extend their phone memory capacity with the help of the SD card slots that has been provided. Perhaps the disappointing thing is that it does not have a GSM support, one highly anticipated feature and the prevalent standard used by most countries except the U.S.

    Pricing and availability for the Palm Treo 700p smartphone will be announced later by Sprint and Verizon Wireless.
