iPhone Style Skins For Your Smartphone/PDA

If waiting six months or a year to get your hands on an iPhones seems like too much to bear, then some clever programmers may have just what you need to whet your appetite for a little while - iPhone style skins for your Windows Mobile or Palm OS device. Currently being distributed over the internet through various technology-related websites, blogs, and forums, the iPhone skins are catching on fast.

While the iPhone skin does not add any new functionality to these devices, it does give it a fresh, new updated look in the style of the Apple iPhone. Unfortunately, as fast as the word and the skins are spreading, the Apple lawyers are asking website owners to take them down, citing copyright issues and the potential to create confusion. That's funny. So it is okay for Apple to use the copyrighted name "iPhone", but not for users to create a skin for existing phones based off the iPhone's user interface design? When it comes to copyright issues, perhaps they should practice what they preach.

If you're looking to snag the hot new skins, you might want to do a few Google searches. As I said, many of the links and images are going dead soon after they are put up, but enough people are re-uploading it that you should be able to find it somewhere.

If you're curious about how this whole skin thing works, take a peek at this video from YouTube that shows a Windows Mobile iPhone-skinned device:

Apple iPhone Updates

The long-awaited Apple iPhone was announced this week at MacWorld in San Francisco, and since then there's been a good deal of rumors and buzz surrounding the phone. Today, a few more details about the device and the whole Cisco iPhone trademark issue have come to light.

The iPhone Trademark:

Cisco has held a trademark on the term "iPhone" since 2000, when they bought the rights off of another company. They had spoken with Apple in recent weeks about the use of the term, and posted a statement regarding the issue on their website. Cisco has also filed a lawsuit against Apple for the use of the term. Apple has responded by calling the lawsuit "silly", and insists that should it come down to a court decision, Apple is confident that they would win because the term iPhone is not one that has been used in the mobile phone market, and believes that the trademark Cisco has does not cover that realm.

The iPhone Bluetooth Headset:

Better, up-close photos of the iPhone Bluetooth Headset have made their way online at myiphone.com.

The iPhone European Release:

Forbes is reporting that the iPhone in Europe will have 3-G capability before launching in Europe, and that iPhone won't be available in Europe for another year. 3G is available in large cities in the US and is spreading quickly, so why no 3G version here?

iPhone Video Demonstration:

A demonstration video of the iPhone by CBS news has been posted on YouTube. Check it out here.

iPhone vs Palm Treo 680

With the annoucement of the Apple iPhone, many people have begun to comment on how it is going to affect other mobile phone manufacturers, and some have suggested that the iPhone just might be a "Treo killer". Treonauts has taken a great look debate by comparing the iPhone vs the Palm Treo 680.

Before even delving into what the Treonauts have shown this far, I'd like to make my own observation. Treos are marketed to and used primarily by business professionals. The iPhone is targeted more towards consumers, and younger ones at that. They aren't in the same class, so I don't even think there should be a question about their competition. Nevertheless, some think that the Treo will be an iPhone-killer.

Treonaut has also come to the conclusion that the iPhone is not going to be a Treo killer. They've based these opinions on the following:

  • Screen Resolution and Input Method: The iPhone lacks an actual keyboard. Treo-addicts might not be comfortable going keyboardless. However, this can't really be said yet because no one's gotten the chance to try out the new iPhone multi-touch screen keypad.
  • Operating Systems: The Palm OS has proven itself over generations of Treo devices. The MAC OS X platform has not yet proven itself on such a device.
  • Storage: iPhone has a preset amount of internal storage (4GB or 8GB). Treo users are familiar with external storage options via SD cards. SD cards allow storage capabilities to be expanded, and you can have multiple cards to use with the phone if one fills up.
  • GSM + Wireless Data + Camera: Apple wins out in this category, according to Treonaut. iPhones downside in this area, however is that the WiFi will drain the battery faster.
  • Battery: Both have similar talk time. However, unlike the the Treo, the iPhone battery is not removeable. Removeable batteries are enjoyed by those on the go.
  • The Treo weights about 15% more than the iPhone, but this is due to the keyboard, and Treonaut believes this is a good thing.

So those are the points that Treonaut makes. The iPhone is destined to be a smashing hit, but its not likely to make a huge dent in the business phone world. If you want to read the full discussion at Treonaut, head on over and read the post. They make some very good points.

Apple quietly rolls out 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station

BLG_Apple_AirportExtreme.jpg

Apple has just quietly rolled out a its revised Airport Extreme Base Station as rumored in tech sites earlier today.

The new wireless base station taking advantage of next generation 802.11n wireless technology promises up to 5x the speed and 2x the range compared to model which is replaces

As quickly uncovered when the new Core 2 Duo Intel Macs shipped, 802.11n capable Airport Extreme Cards were indeed built in but not activated. Apple now ships a CD with an 802.11n Enabler for all Core 2 Duo and Xeon-based Macintosh computers except 17-inch 1.83GHz iMac.

Other standard features including wireless printing and streaming of audio have been retained, but this time it also works flawlessly with the newly release Apple TV for streaming of media content from your computer. You can now also connect an external USB hard drive and share it wirelessly with other computers on the network.

The device has given up its cone-like design for a squarish design the mimics the Mac mini and the new Apple TV box. It measures 1.5 inches by 1.3 inches. On its back are 3 ethernet ports, a WAN port, one USB, a Security Slot, and a slot for the power adapter.

The new Airport Extreme Base station is compatible with both PCs and Macs, and sells for $179 at the Apple Store. Estimated shipping date is next month.

MacWorld: Jobs announces "Revolutionary" Apple iPhone

BLG_Apple_iPhone.jpg

We all got what we wished for and then some.

Everyone had different expectations but nobody (not even Kevin Rose) could have predicted how revolutionary a product would be announced during Steve Job's keynote address at this year's Macworld Expo in San Francsico.

The show just wrapped up a couple of minutes ago, the Apple website is back up and fans are now going through the Apple store to find out whet else is new. There is a new Airport Extreme Base Station and the new Apple TV but the star of the show is a new gadget that we won't be able to sink our hands into for the next 6 months.

Keep on dreaming folks...

Apple has reinvented the phone...but we'll have to keep on dreaming a while longer.

20 minutes into the keynote, we all held on to our seats, anticipation building as Steve Jobs began to rattle off "revolutionary" products by Apple. The Mac in 1984 and the iPod in 2001. "Tonight we will be announcing 3 revolutionary devices." We all gasped with excitement, "a widescreen iPod, a revolutionary phone and a breakthrough communications device."

But Jobs wasn't finished..."all this in one device." And indeed the device is amazingly packed with features, which took up the remained or his keynote to discuss.

The Apple Phone is first an foremost a regular iPod...but with a 3.5-inch widescreen (320x480 at 160 ppi). In lieu of the click wheel is a revolutionary new interface called Multi-touch that adapts to the application in use, glide through songs and albums with Cover Flow, email or call with a single touch, squeeze to zoom in and out, or type with your fingers on an intelligent soft keyboard.

As a full featured iPod, the iPhone will sync with iTunes on both PCs and Macs and will playback music, photos, and video (including the 250 new Paramount titles now available on the iTunes store).

The iPhone also revolutionizes the way people make calls. Making a call is now just a point of a finger away. Point to a name or number in your address book, a favorites list, a photo or a name on an email. It will run on GSM/EDGE networks, (exclusively with Cingular Wireless in the United States). Apple chose to make it a quad-band phone which is more or less the global standard for wireless communications.

The iPhone is also an Internet device, using its built in WiFi and EDGE support. A full featured Safari browser and Mail applications, and even widget allow the look and feel of regular desktop applications. Even better,it runs on OS X.

Apple collaborate with Google to provide additional features, Google Maps, Google Search, and free IMAP accounts from Yahoo.

The extensive feature list does not end here (and surely we cannot capture the excitement of a 2 hour keynote speech in this article). The iPhone will also feature a 2 megapixel camera. Bluetooth with EDR and a matching Bluetooth headset.

The device measures 4.5x 2.4 x 0.46 inches and weighs 4.8 ounces, almost the size of the 80GB 5.5 Gen iPod with Video just a bit thinner and taller.

Battery life is a bit wee, 5 hours for talk, video and browsing and up to 16 hours for audio playback.

It will be available in 4GB and 8GB models and will sell for $499 and $599 respectively. This includes a two year contract with Cingular. Unfortunately users in North America will have to wait till June 2008 until Apple can secure FCC approval. Users in Europe will have to wait a bit longer till 4Q of 2007 and Asia even longer, 2008.

Apple Bluetooth Headset & Headphones for iPhone Unveiled

In conjunction with the annoucement of its new iPhone, Apple also announced a Bluetooth headset to go along with the iPhone. Keeping with their trademark minimalistic design, the new Apple Bluetooth headset is a slim, black bar shaped device. It is very small, and features only one button.

Also revealed today were a new set of Apple headphones that will work with the iPhone for both phone and audio/video capabilities. The headphones look pretty much like the iconic white iPod headphones that we're all used to by now, however, in the middle of the cord they feature a small white box with an intergrated microphone and "squeeze" switch to control answering and hanging up calls.

Apple Finally Announces the Apple iPhone at MacWorld

Steve Jobs gave what tech lovers had been craving in an announcement this morning: The iPhone is coming! AT&T’s Cingular Wireless division has teamed up with Apple to make the phone. The new device will ship in June in the U.S., Q4 in Europe, and 2008 in Asia. Two models will be available: a 4GB model starting at $499 with a two year contract, and an 8GB model for $599 with a two-year contract. The phone will have a 3.5 inch touch screen, WiFi, Bluetooth, and a 2 megapixel camera. It will be about as thin as the iPod video and will be palm-shaped. The device will run on OS X, the same operating system that powers the company's Mac computers. It also has Apple's Safari browser for Internet surfing. To the right is an image from the presentation which featured the new iPhone. Shares of the Apple stock are soaring on the announcement.

Apple is currently negotiating with Cisco to purchase the rights to the name "iPhone". Cisco has owned the rights to that name since the mid-1990's, long before Apple started using the "i" in front of its product names. No word on whether any deal will go through, or if Apple will have to name it something else.

Apple iPod Phone Clone: DNET DM751

6929_large.jpgWell here's another one going the iPOD way, DNET DM751 cell phone. Its not a secret that most of the Chinese cell phones are either a derivative of some other's models or a very cheap quality one. DNET has done just that again by coming up with a cell phone which looks just like the iPOD mini.

The phone is on display at the CeBIT 2006 Hannover, Germany. The DM751 features circular kepad design, abandoning the conventional three by four keypad design. But there is nothing to go haywire about the keypad design as well, even that is also a rip off of some other phone model.

Apart from that the DM751 is a music phone and just like any other music phone it also features some dedicated music buttons on the face of the handset. Nothing much has yet been announced on this particular handset, like specs, features, price, availability etc.
