While Apple themselves might not be so keen on producing a tablet Mac computer, it is clearly something that Mac aficiaonados would love to try out. Up until now, Mac users that want a tablet computer have had to settle for tablet PC's powered by none other than Microsoft Windows (or Linux if they so choose).
But now, Axiotron and Other World Computing have come up with a tablet computer - the Axiotron ModBook that runs off of the oh-so-cool Mac OS X platform, making it basically a Mac without the Apple logo. The specs on the ModBook are identical to those of a 1.8GHz Core Duo MacBook.

The Axiotron ModBook is a tabletization of the popular MacBook laptop computers. At it's core, this new tablet computer is a MacBook, which means it not only runs the Mac OS X operating system, but is also equipped with a Combo Drive or Super Drive - something not easily found on other tablet PCs. Other cool features of the ModBook include:

• iSight-enabled video iChat
• DVD movie watching
• Optional GPS unit based on the SiRF III chipset
• A sensitive display fortified by Wacom's Penenabled hardware
• Mac OS X's Inkwell handwriting-recognition technology

Other configurations of the ModBook include 2GHz Intel Core Duo processors, 160GB and 200GB harddrives, and other options. You can pretty much get any configuration available on a MacBook set up on a ModBook.

Pricing on the base model ModBook is $2,279. If you order one before January 31, 207, you can get it for $2,199. The ModBook can be purchased exclusively through Other World Computing and is available to North American customers. The ModBook will be available in Europe in the second half of 2007. The interesting thing about this ModBook is that Axiotron is headed up by Andreas Haas, who was formerly in Apple's Newton group. He has said: "If your favorite input device is the pen, this is the Mac for you." If the iPhone can go keyboardless, why not the ModBook?
