Axion steps into the crowded portable media player battlefield with the launch of two new devices: the AXN-9250 and the AXN-9350. The products were launched at the 2006 International CES.

The AXN-9250 has a 2.5 inch TFT LCD screen, whereas the AXN-9350 has a 3.5 inch one. You can play both videos and music files on these players, which double up as portable recorders as well. The package includes stereo earphones, USB cable, power adapter, installation CD, A/V cord, 1-year limited warranty and free technical support.

Features of the players include:

  • Stereo Headphone Jacks
  • Secure Digital Card Slot (up to 1GB)
  • Supports MPEG 4, MP 3, ASF, WMA and JPEG formatted data
  • Built-in Microphone
  • Super Light-Weight (< 6oz.)
  • Built-in Lithium-Polymer Battery

All standard features. There is nothing that makes these players stand apart from the competition. What's conspicuous is the absence of a FM tuner. Axion has high ambitions for these products - they are being pitted against the much hyped and fancied iPod. I don't think they stand a chance against the halo around the iPod (as does any other device).

Pricing and Availability:

The AXN-9250 carries a MSRP of $149 and the AXN-950 carries a MSRP of $169. Both products will be available sometime in the first quarter of 2006.
