Atari 800 XE LaptopUbergizmo reports that Ben Heck has created the Atari XE 800 laptop - doubling up as a portable video game console - based on an old Atari 800 system. How cool is that?

Pursuing his dream, Ben took more than two years to build this console. So what exactly do you get? These:

  • an Atari XE Game System (from way back in 1987)
  • 8" TFT active matrix display
  • a Compact Flash hard drive running MyDOS 4.53 - the CF card is removable for swapping
  • Built-in NiMH battery pack and charger - also removable
  • Full keyboard (as it came on Atari 800 systems)
  • Built-in 1 & 2 controls
  • Cursor control knob

It also comes with a DB25 printer style port for connecting it to disk drives, printers or PCs using an SIO2PC cable. Head over to Ben's shack for the details. It just goes to show that you don't have to be a big company to make a great laptop.
