Apple's big day
Apple had their "One More Thing..." event today and as expected they rolled out a slew of new products including a new iMac G5, a new iPod (yes it supports video playback) and a version of the iTunes store. So let's start with the G5.
The new iMac G5 comes in a 17 inch or 20 inch display and is now thinner than ever before. The 17 inch system starts at $1299 while the 20 inch system starts at $1699. Other cool new features include an integrated iSight video camera on top of the display and in the chassis itself; the new Front Row media application (Apple's new 10 foot user interface for audio, video and images); a new 1.9GHz or 2.1 GHz G5 processor; and of course the new Mighty Mouse. More on the iMac here.
Ok.. so let's talk about the new iPod shall we? Yes the new iPod does indeed support videos (which you can purchase from the iTunes store but more on that in a bit). However, keep one thing clear - this is still an audio iPod first AND then a video iPod. The new iPod comes in two models - a 30GB and a 60GB model. They are also 30 percent smaller than the previous generation iPod. The new iPods will come in white or black and also have a 2.5 inch 320x240 color display. Battery life has supposedly been increased to 20 hours. More on the iPod here.
Let's also take a look at Front Row. What is it exactly? It's a new media application for the Mac that provides a 10 foot user interface to your audio, video, and photographs on your system. Front Row also comes with a new Bluetooth remote control that allows you to easily navigate the menus from afar. Think Media Center for the Mac but perhaps better? It's hard to say since the MCE UI is actually quite good. More on this here
And finally, there's a new iTunes version 6.0 that is out (yes, I do believe 5.0 just recently came out also). The new iTunes 6 allows you to purchase music videos AND TV shows as well as music files. Purchase videos for $1.99 each (and they are ad-free also) for your new iPod video. Right now there are roughly 2,000 music videos online and tv shows from ABC and Disney including Lost and Desperate Housewives. More on iTunes here
