Apple recalls 1.8 million batteries

Following Dell's lead, Apple has announced a voluntary recall of approximately 1.8 million iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 laptop batteries that make use of Sony's battery cell technology. Of the 1.8 million batteries being recalled, 1.1 million were sold here in the United States while another 700K were sold abroad. The effected batteries were sold between October of 2003 and August 2006.
Apple decide to perform the recall after receiving nine reports of batteries overheating including two instances where the users reported minor burns and property damage. Apple does not expect the recall to have any major financial impact on the company. The affected batteries apparently suffer from the same problems that affected Dell's laptop batteries. On rare occasions, microscopic metal particles could come in contact with other parts of the battery cell which would result in a short circuit of the cell.
