Review: Microsoft SideWinder X3 Mouse

Microsoft recently unveiled the latest addition to the SideWinder line, the new SideWinder X3 Mouse. Designed for convenient use by both left- and right-handed folks, it comes in a smaller shape as well, along with plenty of control features for gaming.

One of the coolest features, like the other SideWinder mice, is the ability to switch mouse dpi on-the-fly. With three buttons, you can customize the desired dpi setting for each button and switch among them without having to access the Control Panel each time. That’s an increase in productivity right there, especially since you can continue with the game while setting the desired sensitivity at the click of a button. To set the sensitivity, open the Microsoft IntelliPoint software (bundled with the device), and under the “Sensitivity” tab, choose the dpi settings that you prefer.

Apart from that, the mouse allows you to program up the five primary buttons (the obvious left and right click buttons, two on the side and the wheel-button) for different functions as you require – and you can also program them for application-specific settings. In addition, you can record macros – sequence of keystrokes that you repeat often (either during gaming or otherwise) – and assign them as functions to the mouse buttons. I tested this by recording a few of my favorite moves in Max Payne 2 and the macros worked like a charm.

The only complaint I have about the macro recording is the user interface, which I think should have been simpler.

The X3 features a wide scroll wheel – certainly wider than my regular desktop mouse (I use a Logitech LX8 cordless mouse). The wheel is also detented, so scrolling is more precise with the mouse. The X3 also comes in very easy to open packaging. No scissors and no pesky paper cuts. You get the IntelliPoint software on the CD.

Measuring 120.4mm x 70.2mm x 40.8mm, the X3 is noticeably smaller than last year’s SideWinder X5, which measured 129mm x 77.7mm x 40.9mm. I have fairly big hands, and had no problem reaching the side-buttons (which are also extremely useful for back/forward when using a web browser). YMMV.

The SideWinder X3 mouse is compatible with Windows XP and Vista, and is now available for a retail price of US $39.99. Microsoft claims a main button life of 10 million clicks. Happy clicking!
