Pantech Impact Cell Phone Review–Learning Curves Ahead

By Steve Anderson - 03/26/2010 12:01:40 AM

14035_Pantech_Impact___Blue__AT_T_I deal with a lot of different cell phones in the course of my normal operations here.  I’ve seen good phones and great phones, more than a few not so great ones, and some that just plain old defy explanation.  Today I deal with a stranger phone, the Pantech Reveal.

The Pantech Reveal offers a phone book with capacity sufficient for a thousand name, number, email and street address entries, an alarm clock, a calendar, a notepad, voice recorder, world clock, calculator, stopwatch, speakerphone capability, GPS with AT&T navigator, Bluetooth capability, mobile email, mobile web, and a panoply of AT&T specific web-based services like Video Share and Mobile Music.

Like I said in the headline, there’s a definite learning curve associated with the Pantech Reveal.  It’s not easy, in the beginning, to get used to these strange, featureless controls, but it won’t take too long before you learn to associate the buttons with on-screen commands.  Most of the controls aren’t labeled in any fashion, so that does pose a bit of a challenge in the beginning. You see those two chrome buttons under the monitor?  Those are the center of the control system.  But what exactly do they DO, you ask?  That’s actually kind of dependent on what you’re doing at the time.  They work like back buttons, okay buttons, and all sorts of others depending on what you’re trying to do at the time.

But it won’t take long to master the control scheme.  And once you do, you’ll find plenty of exciting features available to you.

Thus, the Pantech Reveal isn’t a bad phone–it just kind of gets in its own way, at first.

The Good

Nice feature loadout

The Bad

Unlabeled controls take some getting used to

Score 6 / 10
