Palm’s next-generation smartphone is a touch-based device called the Pre, which features a 3.1-inch display with 320 x 480 resolution, and EVDO Rev. A for connectivity, as well as GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR with stereo support. The Pre will come with an astonishing 8GB of on-board storage, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a replaceable battery, and a 3.5mm headset jack.
Its 3 megapixel camera with LED flash will be superior to what you would expect to find in a handheld device, and the next-generation mobile platform, called webOS, will include gesture-based input for interacting with the Pre. Look for the Pre to be released on the Sprint network in the first half of 2009. Palm says that it is also working on a WCDMA version of the Pre, although the release date on that version has not yet been announced.

This is one of the best phones coming into the market, a phone that even the iPhone could not stop. I want everyone to remember that there’s no perfect phone out there, but this phone comes pretty damn close. I already saw a fans site for the palm pre, http://www.PalmPreForum.org Looking forward to see you sharing your opinions.

[...] Palm Pre details. Who knows which one will start leaking launch details and prices for the European Palm Pre [...]
On 24 Feb 09, a Sprint rep said the Palm Pre’s release date is slated for 15 Mar 09. They didn’t know the expected price, but guestimated around $500 due to the power packed features of the phone. I told them that if the price of the phone is not at least equivalent to, or lower then the price of the IPhone, then palm could keep that “Golden Goose”. The features and style appear to be great, but if Palm is going to force people to take out a second mortgage just to purchase the phone, then they are making a big mistake in this economic environment, because the banks aren’t lending and the money trees in the back yard aren’t producing.
Even if Palm offered the phone for $250 - $299, with a 2-year contract, they will still make a good profit within a year and put Apple (IPhone) on notice. I hope they learned from the mistake Sony made with the PS3’s initial cost of $700-$800, which backfired in their face and caused more people to purchase a lower priced XBOX360 instead.
P.S. - I can not mention the rep’s name. I think the release date is a secret, and I don’t want them to get fired. There’s enough of that going on already.

[...] Will old Palm applications still be available on that new webOS coming in the new Pre? Well it seems like the answer is yes. An icon which indicates an older Palm device and which wears a “Classic” label has been spotted in a new video demo of the Pre. That means you will be able to bring all your favorite Palm applications aboard your fresh Pre once it’s going to be available for grabs. On the other hand maybe we should think ahead. webOS might actually be getting its very own Palm applications which should be pretty interesting. Do you really need Palm OS emulation on your new Pre?
