Oki Demonstrates World's First Safety Mobile Phone

Oki Electric Industry of Japan announced the successful development of the world's first Dedicated Short Range Communication - DSRC - wireless module that can be embedded in mobile phones and used for inter-vehicle communications.
With an emphasis on safety, the DSRC system aims to reduce the number of pedestrians killed in road accidents. The Safety Mobile Phone prototype communicates with a DSRC-enabled vehicle and GPS location information. Pedestrians with this device can then create a DSRC wireless area with a radius of several hundred meters.
When the two locations - that of the pedestrian and the vehicle - become close and when the received power is more than a specified level, the location information will be constantly exchanged. When there is a possiblity of a collision, pedestrians and drivers will be warned in advance allowing them to take corrective action.
