Nokia Selects Broadcom as a Chipset Supplier for Future EDGE Phones
Today Broadcom Corp. announced that Nokia Corp. has choosen Broadcom's single-chip cellular baseband processor and companion power management unit (PMU) for selected future EDGE mobile phones.
The new chip, BCM21331, aka "Venus", is a single-chip EDGE multimedia processor that was first revealed at the 3GSM conference in February 2007. It's designed in 65 nanometer CMOS process technology, and integrates an EDGE RF transceiver and corresponding analog and digital baseband functions, as well as high-performance multimedia and connectivity support. The BCM21331 processor combined with the BCM59035 PMU creates a new solution that is not only extremely power efficient, but one that also accomodates a small board space and slim design and a not so costly price.
The integration of the new chipset will certainly help transform Nokia's future EDGE phones into sleek, powerful, and long-lasting phones coveted by many.
