It’s not clear whether the iPhone will be able to offer your turn by turn driving directions so you might be interested in a new GPS device. I am talking about the new Oregon series from Garmin.

There are four Oregon models. One is basic while the remaining three all have something particular. All models have a 3 inch touchscreen in a waterproof, shock resistant case. Not that you will be going into rough seas or anything right?

The built-in HotFix technology will let you specify a certain location which the Oregon GPS will remember. Like your home or work place for example. With the microSD slot you will be able to add more maps you could need in the near future.

Let’s look at Oregon models. The 400t has full color and 3D topographical maps of the US. The 400i has maps and details about the lakes and rivers in the US. The 400c gives maps and details about the coasts of the Bahamas while the 300 has maps of the entire world. The simpler 200 version has simpler maps.

What I don’t understand is how come you can’t get all those options inside a single Oregon? I might want to get the rivers and lakes thing and the Bahamas all rolled into one.

The Garmin Oregon 200 will cost $480 but I think you’d better get a 400 version for $640.
