19 Oct 08 MSI VR630 Notebook for Europe

MSI has a special unit made for the European market, the VR630 laptop. Strangely enough, it has an uncommon 16-inch screen which obviously makes its resolution unpopular – 1366×768 pixels – but the good part is certainly the 16:9 aspect ratio for movies and games.

In terms of processors, there are 2 choices: either an AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core, or a Sempron CPU. In both cases the RAM memory can go up to 4GB, but default is most likely 2GB. The graphics processor is powered by a GeForce 8200M G, and there are 3 options for the hard-drive: 160GB, 250GB, or 320GB.

An interesting application included on the VR630 is the ECO power management, which saves battery life depending on the mode that the user picked: Gaming, Movie, Office, or others.

The latest MSI notebook is already available in Europe, with a starting price of €430 ($580).

Just a warning to folks out there: this laptop burns hot even when I’m running little more than a few windows.

I had to replace the Nvidia drivers that came with the machine because it periodically crashed: especially when running Flash based web applications.

This is my first laptop, and I’ve heard that this is a common problem with laptops. I can tell you that next time laptop temperature is going to be a prime concern. I’ve heard that the problem might be with the nVidia drivers.

If I had to choose a laptop again, I wouldn’t get this one. I’d consider paying an extra hundred or two if this thing operated 10 degrees cooler.
