Mozilla Firefox 3.0 will be finally available for download on June 17th after no less than 34 months of development. I have tried the betas so far but I wasn’t all that happy and I am hoping for a better experience once I get the final version.
The Mozilla guys are waiting for lots of downloads and they are counting on us all to help them get a spot in that Guinness Book of World Records for downloads in the first 24 hours.
And since I was telling you yesterday about Mozilla’s intention of finally going into the mobile browsing business here’s an update for you. Fennec (that appears to be the ugly name they’ve given to Mobile Firefox) will be available in September for all but iPhone and possibly Android OS. Getting ready for one more strike for Apple here!
Tristan Nitot, head of Mozilla Europe said:
For the iPhone, Apple’s licence can not install software to have an interpreted language. But Firefox includes JavaScript, which makes it legally impossible to carry on the iPhone….For Android, Webkit is integrated into the OS, and only Java applications can run. And Firefox is not written in Java. So that’s why [Fennec will not run on Android]. However, in both cases, things may change in future, but it does not depend on Mozilla.
We’ll be waiting for June 17th first and then deal with September. Apple beware!
