Mobile screens become solar cells

A new patent has been granted to Motorola covering the use of a mobile phone LCD screen as a solar cell. This new solar cell will allow mobile phones and other devices to be fitted with a solar cell screen that would power the device and recharge an internal battery while it was left in the sun.

The Display and Solar Cell Device patent allows mobile phones to be powered by the solar cell screen, as well as get a quick recharge of the internal battery while left in the sun.
It is not know at the moment if Motorola will use this as a sole means of charging mobile phones, or just as a way to increase battery life.
