20 Feb 09 LG Is Working on 12 Megapixel Phone Camera

A Samsung 12 megapixel camera phone has been rumored just before MWC but we haven’t seen it yet. What we’ve seen at MWC was a Sony Ericsson able to shoot 12 megapixel pictures. LG seems also interested in developing such a camera phone and it’s said to be working on it already.

LG Mobile’s head of marketing in the UK says that LG has the 12 megapixel camera phone in the works:

We’ll very much be releasing a 12MP cameraphone. However, it’s important that people realize when taking 12MP images, they’ll be using huge amounts of data, and it will be more difficult to do things like send such files.

Question is, do we really need that many megapixels in our camera phone? Shouldn’t we be buying real cameras with real camera features if we want really professional photos?

Unless there has been unadvertised revolution in the field of digital imaging systems, a 12 MP cell phone camera is a horrible idea that will actually be less useful than a 6 MP (or potentially even a 1.3 MP) cell phone camera. The image sensors that will fit into a cell phone are just too small to support that many pixels. The only noticeable effect from increasing the number of pixels will be longer exposures, since each pixel will be smaller and thus take longer to accurately record the light that hits it. This is same reason why point-and-shoot cameras don’t need more than 6 MP.

The reason that companies like LG and Ericson are even talking about 12 MP cell phone cameras is because megapixel counts are a great way to market overpriced cameras. This page explains all of this in much greater detail: http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm

12 megapixel phone!! This would be an excellent feature to market to AVERAGE (99%)customers, but yea, maybe not for professional photographers (1%). Duh…

Just to point out…almost everyone has a phone in their pockets. How many of us stuff cameras in our pockets too? ‘Kodak’ moments almost always seem to occur when nobody has a camera. I’m telling you all….if LG comes out with this phone in the US, and it’s sleek in design and cost….it will sell like hot cakes.
