iPhone Uses IMAP to Download Yahoo! MailBy Paul - 07/14/2007 12:02:13 AM |

I have never had Yahoo! account with POP enabled (well, I do, but that’s a yahoo.co.uk address). When I tried to configure the iPhone to retrieve Yahoo! emails, it wouldn’t allow me to set the co.uk email address; I had another yahoo.com address and was able to configure it.
Now, I had not turned on POP for that account, and was wondering how the iPhone’s mail client was still able to download mail. To see what was really going on, I took out the SIM card and asked the mail client to retrieve mail. Bingo, it gave an error message saying EDGE could not be activated and that it could not open imap.apple.mail.yahoo.com.
So, it’s IMAP, and a fancy sub-domain on Yahoo!. Interesting. And the only thing that comes up when you load it in the browser is a simple “do you yahoo?”. Wonder who came up with that one. With Gmail, the iPhone automatically sets up a POP account and tries to connect to pop.gmail.com.
