iPhone Firmware 1.1.3 Prep: A Trojan

In light of the recent CES convention and next week's Macworld, many people have been duped into download what was recognized as iPhone firmware 1.1.3 prep. Symantec was the one that's been able to discover the Trojan. Apparently, due to recent rumors of the 1.1.3 firmware upgrade, someone took advantage of iPhone users' excitement and had them download what they thought was software needed to "prep" their phones for the 1.1.3 upgrade. The Trojan does no fatal harm to the phone except alter a few applications. However, uninstalling it could overwrite the other iPhone applications. Here's what Orla Cox of Symantec has to say about this issue:

"This is technically the first Trojan horse seen for the iPhone, however it does appear to be more of a prank than an actual threat," said Cox. "The impact of uninstalling the 'Trojan' would appear to be an unintended side effect. The risk to users is minimal as they would have to choose to install the bogus package and the site which was hosting it has now been taken offline. Nevertheless, iPhone users should exercise caution regarding the packages they choose to install on their phones."
