iPhone 4 Cell Phone Review–Superpowered, Super PriceyBy Steve Anderson - 08/06/2010 12:01:19 AM |
So despite the hordes of people longing desperately to get their hands on an iPhone 4, I finally, FINALLY, managed to go hands on with one of these. Harder than you think, too, I’ll tell you that much. And indeed, there’s every reason this thing is hard to find, but it’s not without its problems too.
The iPhone 4 has everything. I know, that’s not much of a way to express the spec sheet, but it has quite literally everything, or at least within shouting distance of everything. There are games, enterprise applications, entertainment widgets, and a host of other applications that make this a thoroughly mind-blowing experience. I made a map in seconds from where I was at the time to a Qdoba in a neighboring city, and all I had to do was input “(city name) Qdoba” and boom, I had a map from where I was to the Qdoba. I played Skee-ball. I read an ebook in an easy and simple interface. It was truly impressive stuff. And even better, the battery life on this thing is projected at about fourteen hours of talk time on one charge. It’s got persistent Wi-fi, an included iPod, a five megapixel camera with LED flash, and plenty more besides.
It’s not hard to be thoroughly blown away by a phone that’s so responsive to your every gesture and instinct. Frankly, I almost bought one on the spot, which led me to the big problem about the whole thing.
Yes, admittedly, it’s a fantastic phone. No mistake, it’s going to do just about everything you ever wanted, including making and receiving calls. But it’s the price tag that’s going to really blow your mind. Unlocked, these will run about six hundred bucks, depending on where you shop. AT&T, meanwhile, will demand two hundred for the privilege of paying them at least eighty bucks a month–yes, a month–for at least two years. And of course, as we’re all well aware right now, the iPhone 4 has serious problems with its onboard antennas, requiring a case in order to solve.
As magnificent a phone as the iPhone 4 is, it’s always hard to justify spending approaching a thousand bucks on a phone. But that may well be the only significant problem with it, so if your pockets are sufficiently deep, you almost certainly will love this phone.
The Good
Incredible array of features
Excellent camera
Longest battery life I’ve seen yet
Intuitive, easy operating controls
The Bad
Cripplingly massive price tag
Serious and ongoing antenna issues
Score 9 / 10
