Intel Sever Ties with OLPC
What would happen if you try to profit from a non-profit initiative? Obviously, everything will not turn out right. This is the case happening right now between One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) and Intel. The chipmaker has withdrawn its support for this organization because of conflicts with the project and its founder Nicholas Negroponte ".
OLPC dreams of making laptops equipped with AMD processor and open source software available to poor children in third world countries for as low as $100. Though the actual selling price is now $200, the effort is lauded for its sincerity and novelty. Now enters Intel with its low-cost version known as Classmate, a direct competitor of OLPC. The problem is that both companies are vying for government sales in several countries.
Perhaps disregarding the ultimate objective of this project and focusing more on profits, both parties are not backing down. Too bad, they are supposed to present a new OLPC with Intel processor. Apparently, it won’t be happening now.
