Apple iPhone
The Apple iPhone is not just a phone - it is a phone, music player, video player, internet device, and camera all in one. Like its Apple iPod Nano and iPod video cousins, the iPhone is slim and sleek at just 11.6mm thick, 2.4-inches wide, and 4.5-inches tall.
Steve Jobs has such confidence in the new iPhone that he has said he wants to sell over 10 million of them by 2008. I think he's setting his sights a little low, and project that Apple will sell over 10 million iPhones in less than 6 months. With the following that Apple has, and the fact that this device has been rumored about and anticipated for almost four years now, it shouldn't be too far out of the realm of possiblity.
iPod Features:
The Apple iPhone is a widescreen iPod that features touch screen controls that allow you to enjoy all your content, including audiobooks, music, TV shows, and movies. It features an amazing 3.5-inch widescreen display, and allows you to sync content from your iTunes library on your PC or Mac, making that content also accessible with just the touch of a finger.
iPhone users will be able to scroll through songs, artists, albums, and playlists with just a flick of a finger. One cool new feature of this function is the display of album artwork - you can now use Cover Flow to browse your music library by album artwork for the first time on an iPod.
Phone Features:
Using the phone function of the Apple iPhone, you can calls by simply pointing your finger at a name or number in your address book, a favorites list, or a call log. All your contacts from a PC, Mac, or Internet device are also automatically synched, you can select and listen to voicemail messages in whatever order you want — just like email. Calls can easily be merged together with just the touch of a button to create a conference call. Conference calling has never been easier!
SMS Text Messaging:
Using the iPhone, you can send text messages withan SMS application with a predictive QWERTY soft keyboard that prevents and corrects mistakes. This makes it easier and more efficient to use than the small plastic keyboards found on many smartphones.
Camera Function:
The Apple iPhone also features an amazing 2-megapixel camera, as well as a photo management application unlike anything available on a phone today. Users can sync photos from a PC or Mac, browse or email them with just a touch of the screen.
Internet Device:
The iPhone features a rich HTML email client as well as the Safari browser, which automatically syncs bookmarks from a PC or Mac. The Safari browser has built-in Google and Yahoo! search. You can also multi-task by reading a web page while simultaneously downloading your email in the background via WiFi or EDGE. Safari also includes built-in Google and Yahoo! search. You can even display Google Maps as they were meant to be seen, and zoom in to view specific points.
E-mail:
The iPhone is great for multi-tasking, so you can read a web page while downloading your email in the background over Wi-Fi or EDGE. Its e-mail client fetches your email in the background from most POP3 or IMAP mail services, and then displays photos and graphics along with the text.
Widgets:
Extend your iPhone with widgets, small applications that give you helpful information like stock reports, weather reports, and more in real time.
Touchscreen:
The iPhone features an amazing 3.5-inch widescreen display, and has one of the most revolutionary user interfaces since the mouse. The interface is unlike anything you've ever experienced on a phone, with a large multi-touch display and innovate new software that allows you to control everything with the touch of a finger.
Intelligent Keyboard:
The iPhone features a full QWERTY keyboard that allows you to send and receive SMS messages, email, etc. It is predicitive, and therefore prevents and corrects mistakes.
Built-in Sensors:
The iPhone incorporates an accelerometer, which detects when a user switches from holding the phone in landscape to portrait mode, and automatically updates the image on screen to fit the mode. The sensors also detect when you put the iPhone near your phone, and automatically shuts off the display screen until you move it away to save on battery power. An ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the screen's brightness to the appropriate level for the current ambient light, which enhances user experience and also saves on battery power.
Accessories:
As of now, Apple has announced a Bluetooth headset that will work with the iPhone, as well as new headphones that incorporate a small white box in the middle of the cord. This box has a built-in microphone and a switch to answer and hang up phone calls.
The phone is expected to come out in June 2007 in USA, Europe in the fourth QTR and Asia in 2008 and it will be available exclusively on Cingular for $499 on a two-year contract for the 4GB version and $599 for the 8GB version. Get your iPhone from here -> Apple.com

Apple just did to cell phone manufacturers what they did to MP3 manufacturers, Took a large sword and cut off their heads. Everyone will have this phone in 2 years. Cingular just made billions dollars. As for the nay sayers...
The iPhone is powered by OSX and completely intergrated with all the iApps.
The Ericksen's Nokia's and Motorolla's are

The greatest thing apple has ever thought of

what does the toggle button below the screen do?
is this a slider phone?
{coz it looks like a slider phone (kinda like somethin from Nokia) especially with that toggle button below the screen.}
granted that it is a slider phone, how come all the pictures I have seen in this site as well as in many other sites (including Apple's official page on the iPhone) features the same view of the iPhone--isn't there something more to see other than its widescreen facade?
Thanks!
And sorry if I sound demanding. I'm trying really hard not to, but I suck, coz I'm really curious and all excited with the phone that I've been waiting for years already!
Thanks again!

Am I getting it right that this is just a prototype and not yet final?
I do hope that it's just a prototype coz there's still so much to improve on it, and so much more to finish like:
-a stylus
[hopefully, coz what if my fingertips are grimy and I want to make a call without having to smear grime onto my iPhone's touchscreen display?]
-real tangible keys
[hopefully, coz using a virtual keyboard is boring at times, don't you think? Plus I've been accustomed to the Nokia keypad, so there ya go.]

Well, I guess it's official. I wonder when Steve Jobs is going give credit to Bill Gates. Gates was interviewed over a year ago and was asked about his reaction toward the popularity of the iPod. He responded by saying that Apple shouldn't focus all their attention in a single MP3 player. Instead, the future is in combining a cell phone, MP3 player, PDA, etc. all in one unit. Surprise, surprise.

there's not that many details yet on this gadget on the official Apple page for the iPhone.
there's just so many to ask about it and i wish Steve Jobs could offer to open up a live chat hehe.

dmz said it all. I was going to say the same thing. Bill Gates already predicted this. Although credit must be given to Apple for being able to tap into the markets first with their products. It always seems to work that way: Bill Gates has the great idea, Steve Jobs gets the product out there without completely finishing it, leaving it to Bill Gates to finish. The problem is Microsoft being too timid and too concerned with quality. It's what causes their revolutionary products to come out literally years after they should.

I hope they really plan on beefing up the features on this phone or??
If you will permit me, here is my rant...
the iphone is missing buttons on the main surface - cant play video games... plus, when driving it is easier to feel for a 'hotkey' instead of trying to look at your touchscreen...
there is a touch keyboard.. ok.. but what about the stylus? is there even an option? at $500 there should be.
No front mounted camera for video conferencing... (what? that is the future of communication!)
It wont fly for a true all-in-one device... And worse, it uses slow EDGE technology... (that is what sprint is currently using to market AGAINST cingular in their latest advertising campaign)
HDSPA Anyone??
did i mention the 3.5 inch screen is too big? My pda is already a 3.5 and I need something smaller... The 2.8 is the way to go... trust me on this... I have big PDA outlines on the pockets of all of my jeans now...
infrared? i mean, bluetooth is good, but too much hassle for a quick device-to-device electronic business card transfer which happens so often in the business world... (ever tried to create a bluetooth network just to transfer a file? nightmare. of course you could just hand over your sd card - if it had a slot ; )
Final flames.. No expandable memory, so dont even think about stockpiling 8gb Sd cards full of your favorite movies or changing out your movie card for your music card...
and where is that ever-so-needed usb port? C'mon apple.. So basically it is an ipod that makes phone calls.. and when did the world ever need an ipod?
Ok... are we still friends??
Here is my choice of a phone... it is a bit pricier but actually has real features! (note the HDSPA which is cable modem speed on cellular waves!)
HTC P3600
read it and weep! well at least i am weeping until i can afford it!

I was TOTALLY sold on this phone and ready to call to pre-order halfway through watching the keynote.....
Then, Steve uttered the words that ended my dream of buying this phone..... Exclusive partnership with Cingular.....
I could not believe this, I am a recovering Cingular customer, that is living the good life over at T-Mobile. I had Cingular for just over a year, and it was the worst experience I have had since owning a cell phone.
I have been a Mac customer since day 1 (Mac Classic) but there is NOTHING Apple could release that would get me to ever sign another contract with Cingular ever again.
I am totally bummed out.

Jason, If you will permit me, here is MY rant...
"the iphone is missing buttons on the main surface - cant play video games... plus, when driving it is easier to feel for a 'hotkey' instead of trying to look at your touchscreen..."
Do you often play video games while driving?
"there is a touch keyboard.. ok.. but what about the stylus? is there even an option? at $500 there should be."
Why pay for something you don't need? It uses the stylus you were born with - fingers.
"did i mention the 3.5 inch screen is too big? My pda is already a 3.5 and I need something smaller... The 2.8 is the way to go... trust me on this... I have big PDA outlines on the pockets of all of my jeans now..."
HTC P3600 dimensions: 108mm (L) x 58.2mm (W) x 18.4mm (T)
iPhone dimensions: 115mm (L) x 61mm (W) x 11.6mm (T)
The iPhone is 7mm longer, 2.8mm wider and 6.8mm THINNER, which will probably leave less of a mark on your jeans (always high up on my criteria for buying PDA's - NOT). Bigger screen, less jeans imprint. Lower cost, too!
You didn't talk about user interfaces: OS X on the iPhone versus Windows Mobile on the 3600. OS X is still better than Vista, much less a scaled down version of Windows. FULL HTML email and webpages on iPhone, not pared down at all.
The camera lens, HDSPA, SD slot and infrared I'll give you. Maybe on iPhone 2.0. But I'm willing to bet Apple sells more iPhones this year than HTC sells 3600's, even though Apple won't be starting until June.

I agree with the previous Matt. I am a new Mac user, and haven't bought an iPod yet. I use a Treo currently, which I like, but acknowledge the Windows OS blows on it.
However, NOTHING blows more than Cingular, I'll never have them again. I paid the cancellation fee to get out of my contract with them, I will never go back!
Also, I'm a bit miffed at the lack of expandable memory. If it's really supposed to be a combo iPod and phone, why does it only have 8MB? I plan on buying a large iPod, and storing all my music on it, but this iPhone isn't big enough to hold everything, so I would still need to buy the iPhone. I think they should at least sell expandable memory for it. Regardless, I won't be getting anything with "Cingular" printed on it.

Well ... We just got this news TODAY here in Australia.! - Shows how S.L.O.W. we are here hey.?
* But so far, it looks good enough that I'd probably buy it when it hits our shores @ the predicted date of sometime NEXT YEAR, ala 2008, IF I can hang out till then ??? - Price they have quoted for us *Aussies* is around the AU$800 mark, which is pretty good considering other phones with LESS features costing MORE than this *new* baby from * iPOD * - Like all 1st batch technology, this will have a few bugs N all & by then I'll end up with a 2nd or 3rd generation that'll be all tweaked up better than the 1st run.!!
* I'm normally a " Nokia " type person until now ... I was about to go with a SonyEricsson type Walkman, but after seeing this from Apple ... Looks like the * Apple iPhone * IS my next mobile phone for the future.! - I LOVE Technology.!! - Cheer's.!!

Typical Apple. A lot of whizbang, and no meat.
1) No memory cards?
2) Screen is too small compared to Nokia N800.
3) Camera doesn't swivel?
4) Cingular only?
Since none of the other players are stepping up, Apple will sell millions, but I'll wait. Nokia could have killed the iphone out of the box with the N800, but WTF? No phone capabilities?
These companies need to fire their freakin' committees and hire a couple of real users to do their design.

only for Cingular? 2-yrs contract and pay 5 bills for it? plus additional monthly fees on Internet/data services? not sure what kinds of people can afford this, i agreed it's a nice devices, but Apple make a bad move on exclusively bundle with Cingular, Apple should sell it like ipod, no contracts restrictions, then I'll definitely seriously consider getting it, until then, $499 with 2-yrs contract, it's a NO DEAL, very bad marketing.

Hum... as much as WM05 sucks (give me Sharp's Zaurus anytime), I still prefer the Glofiish X500 over an iPhone with OSX.
The iPhone is too little, too slow, too expensive: no USB, no SD, no GPS, awkward BT compatibility, no hotkeys, and bound connectivity plans.
By the time Apple actually gets the iPhone out, E-Ten will probably be selling a thinner device, with bi-core ARM proc, USB hosting, multi-band, Wifi-phone, GPS and maybe Wimax... :)

Apple iPhone will set a new trend and direction for all mobile phone makers as well as Microsoft will copy the idea for those pda phone equips with WinCE, RIM will start to mimic the innovation on it's device, and Palm probably will file bankrupt due to lack of innovation in the last 10 years. One thing though, will Apple able to capture market share since nobody could get one until summer. During these months, Nokia, Sony, LG and others may take advantage on developing one similar if not better.

iPhone is a GSM phone. As long as one could get a hand on it, it could work with worldwide GSM provider with EDGE. I would like to get one but the question is, will Apple able to sell this new break through garget like iPOD or just another disappointed Newton PDA in Apple history. iPhone arrival too late while Newton arival too early ahead of it's time.
