Hackers aren’t always on the bad side of things, most of the time, they play around, looking for security holes, then publish them, in hopes that they’ll get fixed. This is the issue with GSM, which is used by some 3.5 billion devices, who’s 20 year old 64-bit encryption code has been hacked. It was done by German computer engineer Karsten Nohl, who basically bruteforced the 64-bit code with a bunch of strings, and has now released his findings through Bit Torrent.
The GSM association has offered a 128-bit encryption key for years, but very few carriers have taken advantage of the deal.
