Navman S30 3D Sat-Nav

|

Navman is one of the pioneers in personal satellite navigation. Navman's most recent device is a 3D landmark model system, the S30 3D Sat-Nav. Instead of just putting up icons to illustrate points of interest, this uses realistic 3D representations of landmarks, to help you figure out where you are. The 3D system has been brought out across a couple of Navman's S-series models.

The S30 has a 3.5in touchscreen TFT with a 320 x 240 resolution which is clear and easy to read even in sunny conditions, despite its small size. The touchscreen feature is pretty cool as it speaks the characters as you type it. You can set up a multi-point route that can be saved as favourites for future use. Choosing to avoid a traffic jam you have just encountered couldn't be easier. Simply click on the road, select Avoid Area, and your route will be recalculated around it. Once your destination is chosen, the S30 3D's true strengths shine through. The navigation interface is well designed and relatively intuitive. Details of your next turning are clearly displayed on the top left, whilst the top right provides a choice of five readouts, including distance to destination, time to destination, current speed, estimated arrival time and current time.

Garmin GPSMAP 640: For the road and for the sea

|

Garmin has presented a new GPS system codenamed GPSMAP 640, that will be put on the 2-in-1 category because it can work on the sea, and on the road. The rugged and waterproof GPS has a big 5.2-inch WVGA touchscreen, and as usual, it comes preloaded with maps of North America, plus U.S. coastal BlueChartg2 charts - for the people navigating on the sea.

Thanks to the marine mount, the GPSMAP 640 is able to know when to use the marine mode and the terrestrial mode. While using the marine mode, there is a g2 Vision data card that gives suggestions about the best route to pick, and thanks to photo references, users have an idea of how the ports, marinas, and waterways are suppose to look.

Other details on the GPSMAP 640 - XM WX Sattelite Weather provided by the GXM 40 antenna, which in the end also offers XM Satellite Radio, and XM NavTraffic.

Also with the optional BlueChart g2 Vision technology, the GPSMAP 640 can provide a 3-D "mariner's eye view," for a navigation perspective above the waterline, and a "fish eye view" for an underwater 3D bathymetric contour perspective.

The GPSMAP 640 costs close to $1,200.

Nokia 500 Auto Nav

|

Here's something we don't get to see everyday. Sure we have so many powerful navigation devices to count on when it comes to GPS navigation but why not try a Nokia navigation device like the Nokia 500 Auto Nav.

Here's what you will basically find on a Nokia 500 Auto Nav:

  • 4.3 inch touch screen

  • SD card slot

  • loudspeaker

  • microphone

  • 3.5mm audio jack

  • miniUSB port/charger connector

  • built-in FM transmitter

  • Bluetooth.

This satellite navigation system works partially as a phone. All you have to do is connect it to a handset via Bluetooth and make calls if you want to. Although I wouldn't want to connect to Bluetooth via a phone when I could simply do the whole calling thing from the phone itself.

via talkaboutnseries

How about asking someone for directions? Well, you can do so now with the release of Garmin's new nüvi 860 touted as the first portable navigation device with full menu speech recognition. In addition, the 860 nüvi comes in with other features ranging from safety camera alerts and emergency location assistance to hands free calling and photo navigation with Google Panoramio.

Garmin's nüvi 860 uses full menu speech control to make driving safer and easier. It's now possible to keep both hands on the wheel and tell the nüvi 860 what to do and where to go. Furthermore, with the speech control and a Bluetooth link to your phone the nüvi 860 makes calling even safer as it allows you to interact with your phone totally hands free.

Other features include a traffic receiver that can display up to the minute traffic information, a Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free calling when paired with compatible phones and boasts a bright, sunlight-readable 4.3-inch colour touch screen display.

TomTom Explains iPhone Situation

|

TomTom iPhone
We were a tad disappointed by the 3G iPhone announcement, because we were expecting a whole lot more of features and upgrades and all we got was 3G and A-GPS. And we got lots and lots of applications. I do admit that most of those applications do come in handy but we were not expecting Steve Jobs' keynote to be that boring.

A day after we heard that TomTom had in the works a navigation software for the new 3G/GPS iPhone. That sounded almost too good to be true and by the following day gadget blogs were filled with news that a TomTom app won't come to the iPhone soon, due to Apple's strict SDK agreement points.

Apparently TomTom representative Yann Lafargue cleared the air. He admitted there is a working software for the iPhone but he added he isn't sure of what the future of a TomTom - Apple relationship will be. Since when did Apple start to go all Microsoft-monopoly-like on their goods? Are they cooking their personal navigation software?

TomTom Go 930 Reviewed

|

tomtom-go-930.jpg

The Guys at GPSReview.net has just done a review of the TomTom 930 that will be
hitting store shelves (in North America) in the next couple of weeks.
There are two highlighted features. First, Active Lane Guidance that
shows you not only what direction you need to turn, but also what
lane you need to be in. Second, the device now uses data collected
from other TomTom drivers to predict estimated travel times rather
than simply road classifications, called IQ Routes. This makes the
time estimates much more accurate than they were in the past.

|

Telenav_logo.jpg

AT&T
and TeleNav, the first company to offer GPS service for mobile phones in the US, join hands to make New York City a cleaner place. With the help of the two companies, the government of the Big Apple has launched the Street Conditions Observation Unit or SCOUT program. Member of the SCOUT program ride through the streets once a month to observe the conditions. Members report the conditions using the TeleNav Track solution installed on their BlackBerry 8800 handsets with enabled GPS on AT&T network. Using TeleNav's Track technology, the SCOUT members can know where their field agent had been and can pinpoint where the exact location of the offense is. Hopefully, the same program would launch in various other places in the future.

|
CIN-7000.JPG

Those lucky Koreans always get to taste new technology before anybody else and the CSN-7040 is no exception. Ready to be launched in Korea by a company called CTT-Net, the CSN-7040 is the first portable navigation device (PND) to incorporate Immersion's TouchSense system, which enables tactile feedback on touchscreens. The CIN-7000 is a built-in car navigation system and boasts of the same TouchSense technology. Among other features, both the navigation units sport a 7-inch touchscreen and a DMB receiver for satellite downloads. The TouchSense system provides a distinct tactile confirmation of any selection on the touchscreen, improving usability while also enhancing safety, in case of car navigation devices, by reducing glance-time while driving.

Get ready for more devices in a myriad of fields ranging from mobile phones to gaming systems with TouchSense as Immersion informs us that LG, Nokia, Samsung, 3M Touch Systems have all obtained licenses for TouchSense and VibeTonz, which is the same technology for mobile devices. Incidentally, Samsung has already used Immersion's VibeTonz system on its F700 cell phone.
