Google LConsidering Ballons for Wireless Coverage
What Google's thinking is so big, that when it does happen, it could change the face of wireless coverage. The search engine giant is currently seriously considering balloons for wireless coverage and transmission. As such, Google is thinking of working with or even acquiring Space Date Corp., company providing trucker and oil companies' industry-specific telecommunications. As of current, Space Data Corp. is flying 10 balloons a day, for a total of around 15,000 since 2004. The balloons, which rise 20 miles into the air, act as cell towers would. In the future, these balloons are projected to be used for various services including medical-related specifics, such as wireless PDA diabetes reading. A single balloon could cover an area which would otherwise require 40 cell towers. The caveat: each balloon only lasts 24 hours, which means Google would have to supply the area with fresh balloons regularly. Still each balloon costs only US$50. The transceivers on the balloons would then float back to earth on a parachute. These transceivers costing US$1,500 each are recovered using GPS. It'll be exciting to see this technology come to pass in time, as it will open the floodgates of modern-day wireless coverage, especially in rural areas, as Google reportedly believes.
