FOFA - Find One Find All

FOFA, or Find One Find All, can be easily summed up as a key finder made by Melbourne Designs. It is the perfect device for people that tend to forgot the car or home keys around the house, instead of keeping them all at the same spot.
The devices communicate wirelessly so you know its location, and on top of having two alarm systems - flashing and beeping - it also comes with a radio transmitter that sends signals to the user, which gets stronger as you get closer to the “destination”. The limit of units used at the same time is 36, so there shouldn’t be a problem keeping track of all small items that get lost.
The Find One Find All Key Finder is available online and costs $25 a pair. Extra accessories like the FOFA-XD cost $13, while the Glasses FOFA-XD is priced at $20.

The FOFA is one of those ideas that is much better on paper than in the real world. The problem is the VERY SHORT BATTERY LIFE. With new batteries, they work, not up to the advertised range of up to 30 feet but rather more like maybe 10-15 feet. If keys are in a coat pocket in a closet, you have to be at the closet door - better still in the closet!
The major problem: think about it, for these to be useful the receivers in these FOFA’s are always operating, always listening in case its mate calls upon it, 24/7 drawing battery power. Therefore the batteries don’t last anywhere close to a year, as advertised, but more like maybe 3 months - maybe.
I purchased 4 set of these the end of December 2008. About a month ago we lost a set of car keys which had a FOFA on it. Sadly the FOFA was useless because the batteries were too low to work. Therefore, we never found the keys. The replacement Toyota key was $350 with the computer reprogramming charge. THE FOFA WAS USELESS!
A set is comprised of 2 FOFA’s which costs $24.95 + S&H. Replacement batteries are $5 each (need two batteries for a set of FOFA’s). That’s $10 for realistically 3 months. Now figure you need probably 3 sets of batteries per year. That’s $30 worth of batteries to insure these are going to be dependable when you need the use of one of them. That’s why it is a better idea on paper than in the real world. I then checked the other 3 sets of FOFA’s I have. They were all dead. Useless! Save your money!
