Pioneer unveiled BD-101A, one of the industry's first PC-based Blu-ray disc drives. Using shorter wavelength blue lasers, the BDR-101A aims to store up to 25GB of data on a single layer Blu-ray disc. The drive is bundled with software to transfer files onto the discs.

While Pioneer is aiming at professionals and geeks who want to be the first to adopt new technology, there is great demand ahead as the market for high definition video camcorder grows. The BD-101A is versatile enough to handle playback and recording on DVD media as well.

The BDR-101A is slated to read BD-ROM/R/RE, DVD-ROM/DVD-R/RW and +R/+RW discs as well. Expect this to hit the market in Q1 2006. More info is available from .
