03 Mar 10 Coby NBPC722 smartbook

cobylead101

Man, Smartbooks are getting cheap these days, and this one is retailing at about $85. Seriously.

The NBPC722 smartbook from Coby was prominently on display at CeBIT. It has a 624MHz Marvell PXA303 processor, 2GB of flash storage, and Windows CE.

It should be available in the Spring, and if they can keep the price this low, it should be quite a hit. This is assuming that it won’t be as “cheap” as the price implies.

This is big news, for a company whose products are as pervasive as COBY’s to get into the PC price war. Finally the day of ubiquitous CHEAP computing has arrived. This should help drag down all computer prices, even for Apple and Sony. Let’s hope so anyway.

I agree – the more of these low cost netbooks on the market the better. I have purchased 4 netbooks as refurbished items in the past couple of years and I love them (Acer & two other brands). The first one I bought for my wife was an ASUS running a trimmed down version of Linux to keep the price down (could not download and install programs, even those written for Linux), but for the $200 price I still considered it a great deal (she’s a teacher). The last couple of Acer’s I bought for about $250, and they are loaded with memory, speed and hard drive space with an incredible screen and lots of connection ports. I have MS Office 2007 on them and lots of other programs. Now if only the Macs would come down in price!
