[caption id="attachment_32752" align="alignleft" width="280" caption="Sony Ericsson Naite"]Sony Ericsson Naite[/caption]

Naite candybar phone is reasonably priced 3G device that is a part of the company's new GreenHeart allegiance. The phone has basic e-mail and texting ability and even has support for video phone calls. The Naite, pronounced "nigh-tee," sports a 2 megapixel camera with photo uploading capability, and also comes with many of Sony Ericsson's advanced media player features. Users can surf the web with and take calls on a hands-free Bluetooth headset, too. These GreenHeart products do away with hazardous chemicals in production, reduce paper consumption and use smaller packaging. They also come with 5 star energy efficient chargers.

The Naite includes an Ecomate application, which helps its users make greener choices, as well as a Carbon Footprint calculator to see how much CO2 is being used each day. There will be a big campaign for the Sony Ericsson Naite in Latin America, Asia and Europe in the third quarter, as the company anticipates it will become one of its top sellers. It is expected to go on sale in Q3 of 2009.

Palm Touchstone Already Available?

|

The Touchstone is a remarkable dock for the Pre as it requires absolutely no wires to charge the newest Palm handset. And it looks like some Sprint stores are already selling the chargers days ahead of the actual Pre launch. Question is, why buy a charger if you don't have the guarantee of getting an actual Pre? And this Touchstone has been sold for $20 less than the regular asking price. Anyone care to explain?

ZTE Coral-200-Solar Phone

|

It's not the Blue Earth from Samsung and it's not LG's future solar phone but it's a solar phone nonetheless. It's the ZTE's Coral-200-Solar phone from Digicel meant to be a cell phone solution for those regions of the world where people don't have any power outlets available or can't afford them. That's about 2 billion people around the world, so making a solar mobile seems a rather logical decision. The phone will charge its battery on its own, straight from that solar power. It will be available in June for an undisclosed yet price.

Will the Sony Ericsson AB900 be a hit? You decide!

Nokia N79 Eco Comes Without a Charger for a Good Cause

|

The Nokia N79 comes now in an eco-friendly form. This is another green initiative coming from the Finnish company. The Nokia N79 Eco will ship to you without a charger. You will still pay the same price but £4 will go to WWF since there's no charger in the box. The box of the N79 Eco is smaller which means you'll also save on energy and waste.

Where will you get a charger from? Well you do have an old Nokia phone right? Or you can always buy an extra one from any shop. The N79 Eco is currently available in the UK but be sure to check with your local Nokia representative to see if it's available in your country too.

Review: Sony Ericsson C905 Cyber-shot 8.1 Megapixel Camera Phone

|

We saw the Sony Ericsson C905 leak out a few months ago. The phone was ultimately released and is one of the way better Cyber-shot camera phones out there. Boasting an 8.1 megapixel camera, the C905 is equipped with a 2.4 inch screen that can be used in both portrait and landscape modes thanks to the built in accelerometer. Measuring 104mm x 49mm x 18mm, the phone weighs in at an arguably hefty 136 grams (4.8 oz), and is compatible with GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz and UMTS 2100/HSDPA networks.

Packaging

Our review unit, provided by the folks over at PureMobile, came with the following items in the package:

  • Sony Ericsson C905 Cyber-shot cell phone
  • Charger
  • Stereo headphones
  • USB data cable
  • PC Suite and Media Manager software CD
  • USB adapter for the memory stick
The phone comes with a slide-out keypad with standard T9 input that is common on most other Sony Ericsson phones. The phone features a crisp 262k color display, which doubles up as your camera preview window.

The Camera

Interestingly, the photos for this review were taken from another 8 megapixel camera (a Canon PowerShot SD1100 one). While images from the Canon are marginally better than the ones from the C905, the image quality on the C905 is an order of magnitude better than just about all the other camera phones out in the market. The face detection feature lets you easily focus on the subject, while photo fix lets you adjust contrast and light balance after you've shot the picture.

Now, I am a large believer that digital photos above 5 megapixels in resolution are just a waste of space, so I lowered the resolution of images on the C905 to 5MP (it's easy to set the resolution from the phone menu when you are operating in camera mode). Even with this modification, the photos were really pretty good. Check out the sample photos to see what I mean.

Sometimes, the camera shutter is off by a second when you shoot the photo - leading to blurry images, which you can avoid by turning on the image stabilizer. For low light conditions, there's a xenon flash. While I did not try it, the camera also supports video blogging, letting you upload videos online in seconds (based on your cell phone network - better if you're on WiFi). You can also geo-tag your photos.

The Phone

When the slider is closed, you can do a few things, including look up the recent call list (called, received and missed calls), from where you can call any of those numbers. You do this the usual way - by pressing the Call Answer key.

The Sony Ericsson C905 also comes with a shortcut button that lets you see new phone events (text messages, call alerts), switch between multiple running applications (yes - there is multitasking support), a list of quick shortcuts for the most commonly used applications, WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity and so on, and finally for web access. I realized that I spent quite a bit of my time with the shortcut key - and it is useful without having to slide out the keypad each time.

That said, when you want to send text messages or access other installed tools and applications, you will have to slide out the keypad.

Applications

One of the more important applications on any phone these days is the web browser. The Sony Ericsson C905 comes with the Access NetFront browser (one of my former favorites). On the earlier Nokia Series 60 phones, this was just about the best browser out there - until Opera came out and became the leading browser on phones. Opera is, as usual, available as a free download for the C905 - and I recommend downloading this if you are serious about browsing a lot on your phone.

The other applications are nothing to write home about: you have your default calendar, clock, notepad and task applications as well as a handy integrated FM radio receiver.

Messaging

For regular text messaging, there's the default SMS application. Now, one of the features I liked on this is that it remembers the last few numbers/contacts that you sent the message to, so if you want to send the message to them again it is very convenient. The C905 supports POP and IMAP email accounts as well, but for some reason I could never get it to work with my Gmail account.

Synchronization

Sony Ericsson provides its PC Suite software for syncing data between your phone and computer. The software is easy to use, but I wouldn't call it dead easy - that's something that can be improved. The Media Manager, on the other hand, is much easier - drag and drop stuff that the average 6 year old can handle.

Conclusion

The Sony Ericsson C905 is a worthwhile investment. It sucks that the phone is not available subsidized here in the US, but you can buy it unlocked (see below for details). The phone has a wonderful scratch-resistant screen, impressive 8 megapixel camera and comes equipped with a 2GB memory stick.

Whack Rating: 8.0/10

New Nokia Bluetooth Headset: BH-804

|

The BH line of bluetooth headsets made by Nokia takes a big share of the market, and that is why the BH-803 launched in April has received an update today, in the form of a new product comes the BH-804.

As expected, aluminum is the material used on the case, which makes it lightweight and that is one of the main important features on bluetooth headsets. In order to know the status there is a LED with 3 colors, and the charging sessions can be done quickly by using the microUSB port.

In working mode the BH-804 has 4 hours of battery life, and on standby mode it can go up to 150 hours, or 6 days.

Thankfuly, a neck strap + desktop charger are included in the package.

The GreenHeart will sport some of the various features:

  • bio-plastic housings

  • recycled plastic keypads

  • a zero charger with 3.5mW standby power

  • HTML based e-manuals instead of traditional printed ones

  • environmentally conscious packaging.

Sony Ericsson is on their way of creating a better eco-friendly, biodegradable phone. Hopefully they will be able to actually launch one for the general public.

Nokia 500 Auto Nav

|

Here's something we don't get to see everyday. Sure we have so many powerful navigation devices to count on when it comes to GPS navigation but why not try a Nokia navigation device like the Nokia 500 Auto Nav.

Here's what you will basically find on a Nokia 500 Auto Nav:

  • 4.3 inch touch screen

  • SD card slot

  • loudspeaker

  • microphone

  • 3.5mm audio jack

  • miniUSB port/charger connector

  • built-in FM transmitter

  • Bluetooth.

This satellite navigation system works partially as a phone. All you have to do is connect it to a handset via Bluetooth and make calls if you want to. Although I wouldn't want to connect to Bluetooth via a phone when I could simply do the whole calling thing from the phone itself.

Sony Ericsson Cybershot C905 gets official, S302 tags along

|

Sony Ericsson has finally made it official! The 8.1-megapixel shooter in the CyberShot lineup will see a release somewhere in the fourth quarter of this year as will the S302 in the Snapshot series, who decided to go public with the C905. Unlike the C905, the S302 will feature only a 2-megapixel camera, more suitable for the casual photographer than a pro. The little one will also have Bluetooth, USB support, 20MB of internal memory with Memory Stick Micro expansion. While the S302 decides to stick to just Crystal Blue and Thunder Gray, the C905 will come in colors of Night Black, Ice Silver, and Copper Gold.

There are no details on the pricing yet, but at the rate at which the C905 turned from a rumor to reality, I don't think we'll have to wait too long.

Samsung SCH-W510 and SGH-F268 Phones

|

Samsung has released two new eco-friendly phones during the World IT Show in Korea, the W510 and the F268. The SCH-W510 is called the Bio Cover Phone as it uses bioplastic material made from cornstarch and is manufactured using an environmentally-friendly metal finishing process while the SGH-F268 has no brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that can be harmful to people and will be offered with eco-friendly accessories such as a headset and a charger.

Unlike most of the phones on the market, the W510 does not contain elements like Mercury, Lead or Cadmium. The features of W510 were not unveiled yet, but we can see a photo camera with flash, a pretty wide display and mobile TV capabilities, hence it's most probably a mid-end device.

Samsung F268 comes with a special alarm that allows users to know exactly when the battery of the phone is fully charged and can be plugged out. In terms of features, the new F268 is a tri-band GSM handset with a 2.1 inch TFT display (262K colors and 240 x 320 pixels), a 2 Megapixel camera with video, Media player (supporting MP3, AAC, WMA, MPEG4 and 3GP), FM radio, Bluetooth 2.0, WAP browser, USB and microSD card support.

The W510 is expected to be available in the end of this month and the F268 will see a launch in China this month - no word on a UK launch just yet.

Cell Phone Company Credo Goes Eco-Friendly

|

iqua_bluetooth_125x125.png
The fact that Earth is dying slowly under our excessive exploitation is well known. Because of that everyone is trying to contribute the way they can to find alternative ways for getting all that necessary energy stuff for our daily complicated lives.

Credo is the first cell phones and related accessories manufacturer to develop eco friendly products. Not only have they come up with some interesting pieces of engineering but they have also donated more than $60 million - representing 1% off their overall revenue - to organizations fighting for Earth's rights like Greenpeace, Rainforest Action Network, the Endangered Species Coalition and more.

And let's see what these easy to use and easy to purchase daily commodities Credo offers:

  • CREDO Iqua Solar Bluetooth headset. This is of course a Bluetooth with up to 200 standby hours. It can be connected to any kind of Bluetooth device and it gets it's required power directly from the sun. Probably it will charge up on a rainy day too!
  • CREDO Tread handset case. Buying this case made out of recycled tires means preventing cancer. Those tires usually get burned and the benzo(a)pyrene which gets in the air we breath is a dangerous cancer risk factor.
  • CREDO Solio Charger. Charge your phone, your iPod and your digital cameras with this sun-power charger. It will prevent the release of large quantities of CO2, thus fighting the greenhouse effect.

These are all very affordable accessories that can be hooked to multiple phones. We all should be more interested in taking action against massive pollution and this can be our way of helping out.

New York International Auto Show 2008

|
desc

MobileWhack was at the New York International Auto Show 2008 (last day is today!) that happened at the Javits Convention Center in New York. There were a host of new/concept cars on display including the Honda FCX Clarity - a fuel cell car. The fuel-cell stack in Clarity converts hydrogen fuel and oxygen into electricity that is then used to drive the engine. The end result is, you guessed it, water vapor, making it a truly zero-emission alternative.

As you can see, the current FC stack from Honday is much more compact compared to one they had in 1999. The FCX Clarity motor's rotor shaft has a hollow construction where the driveshaft passes through the center in a coax configuration, allowing the motor and gearbox to be combined into a single unit.

The Clarity is currently in limited availability in Southern California.

Philips GoGear SA5225 Digital Audio/Video Player

|
Philips GoGear

The new Philips GoGear SA5225 digital audio/video player just cleared the FCC hurdle. The player handles WMV and MPEG4 video files as well as WMA and AAC audio files. It also has a picture viewer, and is capable of displaying album art. There's an on-board FM radio receiver, while the recording utility lets you record not only voice memos but also FM audio.

The GoGear player can also stream audio and transfer files using Bluetooth wireless technology. The player features an Options button which throws up useful options depending on the current menu, as well as volume controls at the bottom. There's a 5-way control point that lets you play/pause, skip forward/back and scroll up/down. It comes with a USB connector to aid in data transfer.

The Philips GoGear SA5225 can be charged over USB, which is convenient. It takes a good 4 hours for a complete charge (80% charge takes 2 hours).

No word on the pricing or availability, but check back with us for that later.

Bamboo: A Degradable Cell Phone Concept

|

Bamboo1.jpg

Nokia Remade isn't the only phone concept which looks promising or, at the very least, intriguing. This entry in the Greener Gadgets Design Competition 2008 is every bit as sensational, although whether it actually hits the stores, I leave that up to time. Called the Bamboo, this is a degradable cell phone concept designed as an environmental-friendly device. The Bamboo's casing is made of bio-plastic made of renewable natural resources like corn, and Bamboo, which, when harvested, grows back in due time. What's more, after a year or so and you decide not to use the phone anymore, you can bury the print board, battery, and antenna in compost, which will then disintegrate, releasing bamboo seeds that would grow into new plants. The phone will also feature an energy-efficient monochrome display, and a hand-crack with which to re-charge the device. A 3-minute cranking session could provide enough power for one phone call. What better way to get those arm muscles tones and help save the environment at the same time?

More pics after the jump.

SurfaceSound car kit for iPhone

|
bluetrek_SurfaceSound.jpg

iLounge, the unofficial authority on everything starting with a little "i" and produced by Apple, has declared the Bluetrek SurfaceSound Compact as the best hands-free car accessory for the iPhone. While facing it off with many of the conventional solutions out there, iLounge concluded that, "Using SurfaceSound Compact makes the calling part of using an iPhone substantially better in your vehicle."

Developed by ModeLabs Group, the SurfaceSound Compact fits snugly to your car visor and combines a Bluetooth -enabled microphone and NXT flat speaker to connect to your iPhone and deliver greater call quality, enough for you and your passengers in the car to talk and listen. With 15 hours of talktime and 21 days of standby, this useful device can also be charged using the car charger and cable included.

The SurfaceSound Compact is available at a price of $100 across the country.

Nokia Turns Greener

|

Other than acquiring Trolltech, Nokia has made another big announcement. Nokia has always been an environment-conscious company and it has reinforced its green reputation by joining the WWF Climate Savers program. The company aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions as well as improving their energy efficiency by halving stand-by energies utilized by chargers when not in use. This move is in part of Nokia's Climate Change Strategy. This might mean more "green" patents to come. It'll be very interesting what Nokia would come up with to comply with their joining the WWF Climate Savers program.

XtremeMac releases InCharge FM for Apple's iPod models

|
InChare%20for%20iPod.jpg

There is no dearth for iPhone and iPod accessories nowadays with accessories being belted out almost everyday. XtremeMac, after its InCharge iPhone car charger, has now announced yet another car charger tailored for the iPod this time with a built-in FM transmitter.

InCharge FM works with the standard 12 volt power outlet common on most automobiles and can charge any 4G or later iPods with the Apple's standard dock connector. It is integrated with Quintic's PureFM technology delivering tunes wirelessly to any FM radio with near CD quality. The crystal-clear LCD and buttons for playback control adds up to a convenience not comparable to some of the other similar solutions out there.

"Our first FM transmitter was the first to use an LCD for tuning, and a subsequent version was the first compact unit to use an external antenna," said CEO Gary Bart. "We have continued that path of innovation by integrating Pure FM technology into InCharge FM."

InCharge FM is currently priced at $69.95 and is scheduled to be launched in the coming weeks. It can also be preordered via XtremeMac's Company website.

angstrom.JPG If you've ever gotten cut off in the middle of an important phone call or if your batteries have ever died without you having the option to recharge anytime soon, Micro Hydrogen MIGHT be the answer to your problems. Angstrom Powers has been working with Motorola to develop a new and viable fuel cell technology. As more and more people rely on mobile gadgetry, mobile phone companies are compelled to find a way to answer consumer demands, one of which is longer battery life. The Micro Hydrogen, a concept by Angstrom Power, is a combination of many factors including a refillable hydrogen storage tank, fuel cell architecture and micro-fluidics. Angstrom has been testing the prototype on Motorola Slvr L7 phones. The technology can reportedly double the usual talk time and full recharge the battery within ten minutes. Question is, will this technology actually come to the consumer market and if so, will it be able to replace the widely-used lithium ion batteries? Hydrogen seems a bit risky, but we know there's more to the technology than what Angstrom and Motorola are letting out. Guess we'll just have to sit it out and wait.

Fulton Innovation's Wireless Charging Technology Concept

|

eCoupled1.jpg eCoupled2.jpg

Still during CES 2008, Fulton Innovations has demonstrated their new wireless charging technology concept. The pic of the stand with the balls at the top is the demo of the technology. The balls would change color when they're moved nearer the base and hence would mean they'll start charging. Using the term ‘intelligent power,’ eCoupled uses inductive power coupling which means devices won't be charged based on their proximity with the base but because they need charging. The other pic, the box, is a sample charging based. It's reported that the company is currently talking with various corporations such as Herman Miller, Visteon and Motorola about this concept.

A video demo of the eCoupled after the jump.

eMotion Portable Media Players are Double-Purpose Gadgets

|

emotion.jpg
The eMotion Portable Media Player is the very first solar-powered portable media player. If that isn’t impressive enough, it seems it's also dual purpose. You see, the eMotion PMPs could also charge other mobile devices such as cell phones.

There are currently three different eMotion versions to choose from: the 1G and the 2.8" and 3.5" versions. The specs are available after the jump.

Solio Magnesium: More Powerful Than its Predecessors

|

solio.jpg

New Li-on Extends Battery Life by Up to 10 Times

|
li-on%20battery.gif

We have a lot to be thankful for nanotechnology even though most of us cannot really comprehend its dynamic concept. With this technology, Stanford Researches have created a way to extend the rechargeable lithium ion batteries for mobile phones, laptops and media players up to 10 times.

Indeed, this is a revolutionary development as people are becoming more dependent with these devices to run their lives and businesses. For instance, a laptop today has an average battery life of 2 hours. With this technology, it can be extended for 20 hours.

It’s very interesting to know that some brilliant minds have paid attention to battery life for many are so engrossed with developing new features and designs.

According to Yi Cui, the lead researcher, this major improvement lies on silicon nanowires. Here is a brief technical explanation from nanotechwires.com:

Silicon placed in a battery swells as it absorbs positively charged lithium atoms during charging, then shrinks during use (i.e., when playing your iPod) as the lithium is drawn out of the silicon. This expand/shrink cycle typically causes the silicon (often in the form of particles or a thin film) to pulverize, degrading the performance of the battery.

Cui's battery gets around this problem with nanotechnology. The lithium is stored in a forest of tiny silicon nanowires, each with a diameter one-thousandth the thickness of a sheet of paper. The nanowires inflate four times their normal size as they soak up lithium. But, unlike other silicon shapes, they do not fracture.

Apple iPhone Unlocked, Works in Europe

    |

    Apple iPhone

Well, it's official. Hackers in Europe have apparently unlocked the Apple iPhone using nothing but a SIM reader/writer and a blank SIM card. The phone is now capable of making/receiving calls as well as SMS messages. Just a SIM - that's mighty nice.

The patch has been tested in the Orange UK network. According to descriptions, if Total Unlock is released, it may be patching the baseband firmware - which won't alert the network, but is just sufficient to get around an auth check in the firmware.

And the whole cost? US $96.00.

As the wind spins the turbine on the charger, the wind-generated power is stored for your return to your tent when a cellphone charging is needed. The devices are currently in a prototype stage and are not ready for a mass consumer market, since research is still at an early stage.
