It looks like Palm hasn't forgotten what it's best known for, PDAs. One&Co has teamed up with Palm to bring out a looker, the Zire 72. Focusing mainly on media-centric functions, the Zire 72 has a 1.3-megapixel camera with 2x zoom and video recording at 320x240 pixels. Along with the MP3 and video player, the device carries a 320x320 transflective screen to display bright and crisp images with its 65k colors. Running on Palm OS v5.2.8, the Zire 72 is also endowed with pretty good power with a 321MHz Intel PXA270 processor and 32MB of RAM, which may seem low but just enough for a PDA. It sports 24MB of internal memory which can be expanded via MMC, SD, and SDIO cards.
Priced at $100, the Zire 72 PDA is available on Amazon and other online stores.

Silicon Valley based Elevation, has purchased a 25% stake in Palm Inc. for a total of $325 million USD. Palm cited the reason for the sale as a need to get the company out of debt and back on track. The purchase by Elevation will cause a drastic change of the Palm hierarchy. Former Apple VP Jon Rubenstein will join Palm as the new executive chairman of the board. The Palm board will also increase in size from 8 to 9 members. The share dividend of the sale is reported to be at $950 million. This move was announced by Palm as far back as June 4, but only recently did the acquisition receive shareholder approval.

Dell officially removed the Axim X51 products off its website and stopped selling them April 5. The Axim Pocket PC was first introduced back in 2002. With the discontinued Axim PDA computers, there is a possibility that the Dell may be preparing to bring a smartphone to the cellular market by possibly buying Palm. Dell refuses to discuss such a rumor. According to Jack Gold, an analyst at J. Gold Associates, the move to discontinue the Axim line has been predicted for sometime and Dell was likely to introduce a smartphone later this year. With a line of four smart phones built on Windows Mobile and Palm operating systems, Dell would be wise to buy Palm. They certainly have enough money for such a move.
