limepc.jpgFreescale Semiconductor has developed an affordable “motherboard-on-a-chip” processor device which contains the functionalities of various hardwares and hence, could be used for very small PCs. Lime PC is no bigger than a deck of cards which makes it a perfect testing device for the new Freescale processor. The Lime PC M1 is a Linux-based UMPC by Chinese company Tsinghua Tongfang. It features touchscreen, 16GB flash memory, Bluetooth and WiFi. I weighs a mere 130g and measures 110 x 58 x 15.9mm. It is expected to retail at USD$299 in later 2008. A full UMPC at that price? I definitely want.

Noahpad UMPC Officially Announced

noahpad1.jpg
For some time now, the new Noahpad UMPC has been compared to the Asus Eee PC. It has, however, a range of features unique to it. Taiwan’s E-Lead Electronic will showcase their Noahpad UMPC in CES 2008 next week. It features two 2.76-inch square touchpads which apparently mimic the feel of a real keyboard when pressed. It’s also used as the as the trackpad. The screen is only 7-inches but the UMPC uses virtual screen technology which expands the viewing area to ten inches. Also, when the screen is flipped (as the Noahpad can be folded pretty much like a notebook), it turns semi-transparent. The Noahpad features 30GB HDD, 512MB RAM, and uses Ubuntu 7.10 by default although it is Windows XP compatible. The price isn’t determined yet although it seems to be in Asus Eee PC range, meaning around USD$500.

More pics after the jump.

asus_eeepc.jpg

Come CES, ASUS‘ wildly successful EeePC might make a comeback, this time much more improved than its predecessor. Rumored updates to the current 701 UMPC are a bigger screen from its current 7 inches to 8.9 inches, Windows instead of Linux, and WiMax in terms of wireless connectivity. Another significant upgrade is a rumored 8GB Flash SSD instead of the current 4GB. But all this would just be speculation until Consumer Electronics Show at Las Vegas next week.

UMPC Xmas Wish List - Quick Entry

xmas-logo.gifThe people at GottaBeMobile have put together a cool Xmas wish list for UMPC gadget lovers all over the world. Check how many times they say “I’d Like to See” lol . Heres is some of whats on their list.

“I’d like to see the rush to advertising on everything in order to provide free software and services slow down a little bit. I’m just asking here, but do you know anyone who has ever clicked on an ad? I don’t.I’d like to see the good folks at Dell who think the pricing of the new Latitude XT is a good bargain reexamine their thoughts on this, and quickly.

I’d like to see Amazon, Apple, and other on-line music vendors who launched DRM free efforts succeed in a big way. DRM is still a curse and slows so much of everything down.

I’d like to see Apple come out with a Tablet this year, sooner rather than later.

I’d like to see Microsoft figure out just how woeful its marketing efforts are and put in a major course correction here. Now, please.

I’d like to see mobile computer OEMs take a lesson from Asus and the Eee PC, (and also jkk’s moding by adding a touch screen to it.) These price points don’t have to be so high. ”

    HP%20Compaq%20Optimator%202710p%20Tablet%20Computer1.jpg
The upcoming HP Tablet PC, also known as Optimator or by the codename of HP Compaq 2710p, has received the OK signal from FCC and will probably be seen on the shelves in the near future.

The small sized computer has plenty of good specifications for such a device, but on the other hand (like Giz says) there is no way to find a trackpad which makes the tablet look a bit strange to say the less.

Anyway, the HP Optimator will be something like this:

    - 12-inch display with anti-glare
    - 60GB to 100GB on a smart SATA hard-drive
    - 1GB to 4GB of RAM
    - Processor by Intel Core 2 Duo Ultra Low Voltage
    - Connectivity options go to Wi-Fi, AGN, and bluetooth.
    - ev2200 1exEV-DO or hs2300 HSDPA Broadband Wireless Module
    - 6 cell battery

    Samsung 64GB Solid State Drive

    Samsung 64GB Solid State Drive

So yes, Samsung has started mass-producing the high-density 64GB solid-state drive targeted at notebook PCs. Citing a rise in the use of SSDs in OEM notebooks, Samsung looks all set to take on the mobile category when it comes to storage.

Internally, the 64-gig SSD comprises 64 eight gigibit single-level flash memory chips. Thanks to 51 nanometer process technology, each chip is 1/2500th the width of human hair (that’s right — Wile E. Coyote’s Acme axe can’t cut through it).

The target devices include ultra-slim notebook PCs with flash memory as well as UMPCs (presumably Samsung’s own brand). Other consumer products in the pipeline include printers, PDAs and camcorders that can take in SSDs from anywhere from 4GB to 64GB capacity.

Motion Computing LE1700 Tablet PC Gets FCC ApprovalMotion Computing’s new tablet PC, the LE1700, got the FCC’s blessings. So yeah, it still runs Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005. Motion Computing claims a long battery life on the LE1700. It’s equipped with USB 2.0 ports, and a DVI-D port allowing you to connect the tablet’s display to a bigger monitor.

One of the interesting features of the LE1700 is the SIM card slot, letting you take advantage of wireless broadband over HSDPA networks. The tablet also supports 802.11 a/b/g wireless LAN. More wireless freedom with integrated Bluetooth as well.

All in all, an interesting tablet. As a regular notebook/tablet user, I know its advantages and disadvantages. The LE1700 definitely surpasses my expectations on battery life: up to three hours on a full charge.

No word on the pricing yet, but the Motion Computing LE1700 Tablet PC should hit the markets soon.
