Ah, yes.  The above statement should have most of our Windows Mobile users scrambling for a download link already, if they are as fanatic as me about Firefox Desktop, so here it is (9.4MB heavy).  But keep in mind that this release has been tested on the HTC Touch Pro only, so if you are installing it on any other device, just beware.  For those who still think Internet Explorer is the only gateway to browse the world on a Windows Mobile, give the Fennec a try and you might just end up liking it.  I just hope they have ideas to enable add-ons (just like the desktop version) when the final version is released.

Apple Considering Background Tasks

If there is one weakness that the iPhone has right now, it has to be the ability to allow other processes to run in the background. Understandably, the iPhone is not expected to perform in the same way that PCs and notebooks can, allowing other processes to run while the main app is on the foreground. However, Apple seems to be seriously considering this option to push through.

One would think that if this were to happen, a lot of things may have to be considered. One is the ability of the iPhone to handle such processes and perhaps upgrading or replacing some chips or parts to provide more support to the default apps.

Earlier today, Dan Frommer of Silicon Alley Insider cited sources in the mobile industry saying that Apple was serious about allowing background applications. John Gruber of Daring Fireball backed this up , saying he heard something similar from a decent source a few months ago. I’ve just spoken with a trusted source who confirmed the news as well.

  • Fennec or Firefox Mobile is still in the making. That means that Mozilla is testing its mobile browser for various mobile platforms. Firefox Mobile is currently available for Windows Mobile 6 but it’s still in its alpha state.

The alpha has been particularly made for the HTC Touch Pro, so if you own one you can try the Fennec out. The alpha version will offer you the Awesome Bar search field front and center, suggested search terms and search history. Mozilla built the interface for alpha 1 for Windows Mobile using CSS. That means that Fennec will be able to adjust to various screen sizes and resolutions.

You should definitely try out the alpha 1 but don’t expect too much from it just yet. Bugs may still be present so make sure you offer some feedback about all that Fennec experience to Mozilla. And let us know what you think about it.

The movie is a long time gone, but that hasn’t stopped Paramount Digital Entertainment from creating a game to cater Top Gun fans who own iPhones/iPods Touch.  This time, the players will be trained by none other than Maverick and Iceman themselves and they will aid in players climbing up the rank ladder at the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School.  Just like in the movie, players get to take F-22 Raptors and B-2 Spirit stealth bombers out for a spin or go ballistic with dogfights against MiGs in the story mode with 10 missions that feature a variety of scenarios including the ocean, desert, cities, and canyons during day and night.  Players can also cruise the skies while grooving to the movie’s soundtrack from Berlin.

The Top Gun game for iPhone/iPod Touch is available now on the AppStore for an inaugural price of $1.99, so hurry up and download yours before the price shoots up to $3.99.

While the N96’s kickstand was just a bit of plastic to prop the handset up when displaying pictures or videos, the N86’s kickstand’s is in a different league altogether.  The stand can be assigned to open up any application installed on the N86 when it is kicked out.  So if you want a video player to launch every time you pop up the kickstand, you can do just that.  Now, how cool is that?  Just goes to show that it’s innovation like this that puts Nokia right above other manufacturers.

When you have a big company you’re going to have to expect a bunch of smaller companies trying to get a slice of the success, Apple is no exception.

Apparently a company by the name of Affinity Labs is sueing apple claiming to hold patents on technology for browsing, streaming, and downloading content over wireless and cellular networks. Ring a bell? Yep, they are targeting both iTunes and the App Store.

But that’s not all, another company by the name of Accolade Systems is accusing Apple of infringing on their patent for CMOS image sensors in the iPhone camera.

When will the lawsuits stop? Never, duh!

It’s official, the popular VoIP software Skype has hit North American App Stores everywhere, just one day after it was released in Japan.

After playing with the interface for a while I can vouch for its useability and must say, it’s every Skype using iPhone owner’s dream come true. Although, calling over 3G is limited, the application says due to data restrictions it isn’t supported. Oh well, word has it this feature will make its way into iPhone OS 3.0 when it hits this June. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

For those of you who don’t know what this means, Skype allows users to make calls to other Skype users using nothing more than an internet connection. No monthly charge, no pay-per-minute, no nothing. Then again, you could buy credit allows you to call normal telephone numbers, but what’s the fun in that?

    Windows 7 this September?

Sure Windows Mobile 7 is coming in 2010, but what about it’s big brother, Windows 7?

Well, if a PC contractor, who works with HP, Acer, and other big names, is to be believed, we may be seeing the next version of Windows this September.

With the Windows 7 release candidate just around the corner, this is a completely plausible rumor. But, seeing as it is a rumor, please take it with a grain of salt for the time being.

A video has recently hit the internet detailing new features in Apple’s upcoming Snow Leopard operating system.

Featured in the video is the new ’stacks’ system being added to Snow Leopard. As you can see, you can now browse through folders all in the ’stacks’ pop-up menu, previously when you clicked on a folder within a stack you would be taken to a Finder window.

It’s not a big step but it’s just a little thing to make your life that much easier, and that’s what makes Apple great.

Steve Ballmer’s at it again and this time he sets his focus upon Windows Mobile 7. While we originally learned from a Motorola exec that Windows Mobile 7 probably wouldn’t hit the market until 2010, Big Bad Ballmer cleared that up for us; Windows Mobile 7 is officially set for a 2010 release date.

Ballmer then went on to say, in a Strategic Update Meeting, that a Zune branded phone will never hit the market. Microsoft currently has no plans to produce their own cellphone hardware and will leave that up to the pros.

It looks like quite a bunch of Mac users have gotten their Macs infected with a Trojan virus. How did that happen? Well they all downloaded an alleged copy of that new iLife 09 via torrent sites. 20,000 Macs have gotten the software which proved to be Trojan called OSX.Trojan.iServices.A. So here’s how the Trojan works:

When installing iWork 09, the iWorkServices package is installed. The installer for the Trojan horse is launched as soon as a user begins the installation of iWork, following the installer’s request of an administrator password. This software is installed as a startup item (in /System/Library/StartupItems/iWorkServices, a location reserved normally for Apple startup items), where it has read-write-execute permissions for root. The malicious software connects to a remote server over the Internet; this means that a malicious user will be alerted that this Trojan horse is installed on different Macs, and will have the ability to connect to them and perform various actions remotely. The Trojan horse may also download additional components to an infected Mac.

Here’s what you have to do to clean your system. Open Terminal and follow these steps:

    1. sudo su (enter password)
    2. rm -r /System/Library/StartupItems/iWorkServices
    3. rm /private/tmp/.iWorkServices
    4. rm /usr/bin/iWorkServices
    5. rm -r /Library/Receipts/iWorkServices.pkg
    6. killall -9 iWorkServices
    7. Wipe, reformat and reinstall OS X from your master disc

I don’t have to tell you what we all learned from this, right children?
