Nokia 500 PND Uses Navteq Technology

The Nokia 500 PND we have featured last year in Mobilewhack has recently been released. Nokia’s second and newest PND is using Navteq’s updated, high-quality pan-European maps. To refresh everyone’s memories, the Nokia 500 features a 4.3″ touch screen which maximizes the Navteq maps for your usage. There’s even voice instruction capability and the functionality to view visual images of signposts and motorway exits. With the use of the recently update Navteq maps, you’re getting up-to-date information on your personal navigation device.

HP iPAQ 210 PDA Ships for US$449

While everybody else concentrates in designing all-in-one electronics, HP decides in making a stand-alone PDA. The HP iPAQ 210 started shipping a couple of days ago for US$449. A tad pricey for a stand-alone device, but then again, for the PDA purist, it might just be perfect. The iPAQ 210 features a 4-in touch screen display, Bluetooth connectivity, integrated 802.11b/g wireless, Microsoft Office Mobile, integrated Compact Flash, 624MHz processor, 128MB RAM and 256MB ROM.

Scorsche Industries meets Macworld with two new iPod clock radios and one iPod Boombox. The two clock radios are called the IALM2 and the IALM3. The IALM2 is a dual programmable iPod clock radio. It can feature programmable sleep mode and of course, an alarm mode when you have to wake up. It boasts 2″ high fidelity stereo speakers, an FM tuner with 20 preset stations and a remote control. iPod will be charged while AC adaptor is plugged plus it’s also equipped with a 3.5mm jack for connectivity with other MP3 players or the iPod Shuffle.

The IALM3 has pretty much the same specs as the IALM2, except it has no programmable sleep mode and 2″ speakers. IALM3 is completely portable when powered with 6 AA batteries. IBMBX2, on the other hand, is Scosche’s new iPod boombox which boasts two 3″ speakers, 9 hours battery life using 6 c batteries, programmable sleep mode and digital AM/FM mode.

Strix System’s New In-Vehicle MWS 100

Wireless mesh networking company, Strix Systems, has released the new Mobile Wireless System 100 or MWS-100 — a connection for mobile wireless broadband designed for public safety and transportation systems. It uses 802.11a for public safety applications, while the ordinary person can access it on 802.11g. The device is small and compact, designed for ever type of vehicle. It features multi-RF, multi-channel, multi-megabit capabilities. It also offers four times increase in power can be used for laptops, PDAs and other 4.9 GHz devices.

Looking quite like something extraterrestrial life might have dropped on earth, this is a portable media player named BM532 by Chinese company Shenzhen Bmorn. Considered a “green” device, it boasts 2.0-in 260K color TFT screen. It runs on an Action CTW500 chipset and can be used to play AMV videos and view GIF and JPEG photos. It features an FM player, e-book reader, USB 2.0 high-speed interface, audio recording capability, time shut-down function and measures 77 x 47.5 x 10mm. Macally has announced the new FlexTune portable stereo system and iPod and iPhone dock on Macworld 2008. With the FlexTune dock, you choose between vertical and horizontal iPod Touch and iPhone placement. With the capacity for horizontal docking, it’ll be easier to watch wide-screen videos via the iPhone and the iPod Touch. The device could also be used with the iPod classic and even other MP3 players via an included jack. The system boasts 1500mW power output per channel and is powered by 4 AA batteries. The FlexTune portable stereo system will retail for US$59.99 in leading electronics outlets nationwide in the US.

Apple Announces Time Capsule

As was mentioned earlier, MacBook Air contains no optical drive. To back up your files, then, instead of burnings DVDs, Apple presents the Time Capsule. No, the Time Capsule isn’t just a glorified external HDD. The Time Capsule runs with any Mac system running on Leopard. It has the ability to back up the files of ALL your Mac computers within one home, automatically, every hour of the day. Even if you had deleted files, the Time Capsule would be able to retrieve, them, even giving your Macs the functionality to restore software when needed. The Time Capsule works with the Time Machine which is included in the Mac Leopard operating system update. Other than being a back-up device, the Time Capsule could also serve as a WiFi base station equipped with 802.11n technology. It comes with built-in power supply. The Time Capsule comes in two variants — the 500GB version which will sell for US$299 and the 1TB version which will sell for US$499.

Additional Time Capsule features include:
– dual-band antennas for 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequencies;
– three Gigabit LAN ports;
– one Gigabit Ethernet WAN port;
– one USB 2.0 port;
– Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/WPA-2), 128-bit WEP encryption; and
– a built-in NAT firewall supporting NAT-PMP for features like Back to
My Mac.

Sony has recently unveiled the new Sony VAIO WA1 Wireless Digital Music Streamer. The streamer is a wireless speaker which allows you to listen to streamed music anywhere in the house via your wireless home network. Aside from being a wireless digital music streamer with 2 eight-watt speakers, you can also use it as a player in itself. It has 128MB onboard RAM along with 4 hours’ battery life. It comes with a remote control and touch-screen sensor and can play various music formats including MP3 and WMA. It can even connect to Live365.com Internet radio stations, if you wish! It has a line-in port for media player connection and a line out for connection with home theater systems. It also has a port for headphones as well as a built-in alarm clock. The device will retail for US$350 in Sony Style.

G%20Drive%20Mini.gifG-Technology, manufacturer of computer peripherals especially for Apple Macs, is unveiling the new G-DRIVE mini Triple 500 in this year’s MacWorld convention. The G-DRIVE mini Triple 500 is the first ultra-portable and, at less than 10 ounces, lightweight storage device. It features FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 connections. The device is Time Machine ready and is HFS+ formatted. Using Mac OS X, a feature called “journaling” is possible. Basically, the device keeps a journal of your files while you work so if something happens to your computer while working, the G-DRIVE mini Triple 500 can restore the computer to its previously known good state. The G-DRIVE mini Triple 500 will be available starting March 2008. No retail price has been set yet.

Are you excited about the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona? We know we are. And apparently, E-TEN too. E-TEN will showcase their new and unannounced Glofiish V900. It reportedly features T-DMB and DVB-H, digital radio standard DAB and terrestrial TV standard, DVB-T. It has 128MB RAM and runs on Samsung 667MHz processor. As of current, these are the only known specs of the V900 and if the flyer is to be based upon, it will come, perhaps initially, in black and blue.

Iomega recently announced the eGo Portable Hard Drive. The company will exhibit the eGo HDD at the Macworld Conference & Expo. Seems like the eGo HDD will instill EGO in people. It is available in Cherry Red, Jet Black and Alpine White options.

“With the eGo Portable Hard Drive, Iomega shook up the industry by introducing fashion to a world previously known for little gray and black boxes,” said Tom Kampfer, President, Iomega Corporation.

This portable 2.5-inch Hard Drive enables enhanced data storage and protection. The eGo is available in 160GB and 250GB storage capacities. You can choose between the desired eGo interfaces from the available dual USB 2.0 and FireWire(R) 400 interfaces. Iomega has also launched newer versions of the 250GB USB 2.0-powered models in Midnight Blue, Cherry Red, and Jet Black.

The iRiver SPINN Portable Media Player

iRiver%20Spinn.jpgIn some more post-CES news, iRiver has showcased their new portable media player, iRiver SPINN. The amazingly sleek design made me think of James Bond in a heartbeat. And yet, unlike some which has form yet lacks substance, it seems the SPINN has both. It features a 3.2-in. touch screen where you can watch clips, view images and choose tracks to play. If, for some reason, you have an aversion against touch screens, there’s always the little analog knob controller for you to use. It also features Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity with a microphone and is available in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB variants. No price or release date yet but I bet Bond could get one if he wants to. Lucky bastard.

Metrologic has just announced the release of the SP5700 OptimusPDA worldwide. The device was first available for retail in Europe and then afterwards, in Asia on 2007. The SP5700 OptimusPDA is Windows Vista-based and is especially designed for health care, parcel delivery, transportation and retail and supply chain industry. The SP5700 OptimusPDA features a bar code scanner, 2 megapixel camera, WiFi connectivity and USB & RS232 data transfer options. The company even provides SDK to create custom applications on Windows CE 5.0.

“The OptimusPDA signifies Metrologic’s entry into the Windows-based mobile computing marketplace,” said Mark Schmidt, Metrologic’s vice president of product management and marketing. “For mobile workers responsible for collecting data in the field, the OptimusPDA eliminates the added expense and aggravation of having to purchase and carry around separate devices like a mobile phone, a PDA, a bar code scanner and a digital camera.”

Universal Electronics won’t be outdone by any other as they presented the new addition to the Nevo line of products. The new Nevo line flagship — NevoS70 — was designed as a remote control for different types of electronics in your home. It features a 3.5 inch colored touch-screen with WiFi connectivity. Meaning, if you connect the control to your home network, you get internet connection using the NevoS70’s touchscreen.

Iotek has unveiled their new product — the Data Locker portable external hard drive. What sets this external HDD apart from the others is its touchpad. The touchpad is used to enter the password since the HDD is capable of locking your data. The HDD is 2.5 inches in size features USB connectivity without the need for external power. No word on release date or prices as of yet.

Still on CES 2008, Korean company, YuKyung Technologies has unveiled their new product, the Viliv X70 VANT. The 7-inch gadget is both a portable media player as well as a navigation device when driving. It has wireless internet connectivity via its built-in WLAN. It even has its own exclusive web browser called “Fast Web” which adjusts web pages according to the size of the device. The Viliv X70 VANT is capable of playing DVD and mp3 and can support various video formats. It boasts 256MB memory and comes in either 30GB or 60GB storage capacity.

Since we’ve been covering CES 08 since the 7th, let’s digress and tackle a non-CES newly-unveiled gadget. Electrovaya has unveiled a new tablet PC called the Scribbler SC 4000. The thickness is a mere inch and it comes pre-installed with Windows Vista. The Tablet PC features Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, Intel 802.11a/b/g wireless network connectivity, Bluetooth 2.0, 1.3 Megapixel camera and 12.1 inch touchscreen. There’s no word on price or release date as of yet but this baby looks good so far. Check out the full specs of Scribbler SC 4000 on its product page.
