  • A weird rumor got out and spread around the web. According to it Nokia is going to dump Symbian OS and move forward with Maemo. It was said that Nokia will run Maemo on future tablets and smartphones which is very strange considering that Nokia has invested heavily in the purchase of Symbian and the Symbian Foundation is working on lots of Symbian OS versions, some definitely more interesting than others.

While Nokia hasn’t officially commented on the matter, Peter Schneider, the guy Nokia hired to do all that marketing for Maemo has send a clear Tweet: “No, Nokia is not replacing Symbian with Maemo. Symbian and Maemo will continue to coexist.”

So what’s the real deal? We’ll just have to wait and see what the near future brings us!

Microsoft seems really busy lately! The company is working on its Zune platform, getting ready to sell Windows 7, building Microsoft Stores and forming alliances with rival Nokia. So why shouldn’t it also prepare to launch Xbox Live on mobile phones?

It looks like Microsoft is looking for a LIVE Community Director, so if you got the skills to do it you should definitely apply. Your job will be to manage “LIVE community strategy and execution across a range of properties, from Xbox LIVE to Windows Mobile.” Well now that’s more than interesting! Are just witnessing the Live Anywhere concept?

And in case Microsoft hired you after you read our post, then by all means, leak some hot stuff our way!

    Microsoft and Nokia form alliance

Microsoft and Nokia have recently announced that they will be holding a press conference in the near future to announce a software alliance between the two companies.

Unfortunately for those who thought this would be an exciting announcement, look away as according to the Wall Street Journal this press conference will announce that Microsoft is prepping to release a Symbian version of their Office suite.

This is apparantly an effort by Microsoft to increase their market share in hopes to combat free online office suites offered by companies such as Google. Will it work? Only time will tell.

  • Since we keep talking about tablets these days, let’s shift our attention to a new tablet-like device spotted at the FCC. This one is made by Nokia and it’s headed to the USA via T-Mobile. The FCC gave its thumb up on a Nokia RX-51 device which is not a phone. The documentation reveals AWS 3G support which is a clear indication that T-Mobile USA is the carrier that’s going to launch it. Nokia hasn’t launched the device just yet so we’ll have plenty of time for more speculation in the following weeks. What do you think this device is all about?

  • Nokia RX-51 passes through FCC

Today we have yet another FCC filing that gives us a bit of information on an unannounced device. This time? The Nokia RX-51.

According to the filing, the above pictured device if headed for T-Mobile and will feature 3G connectivity. Now, if you’ve been following Nokia FCC filings you’ll know that they usually brand their phones with RM, but in this case we have an RX branding. What could this mean?

Our best guess could only point towards a high-end cellphone but we’ll keep you posted as Nokia speaks of this RX-51.

Samsung App Store to Arrive Soon?

Everybody who’s anybody is developing an App Store of their own. Besides Apple we have RIM, Nokia, T-Mobile, Microsoft, Verizon and Google are or will be ready to offer you a large selection of downloadable content from various application stores.

So what is Samsung doing? Well it looks like Samsung is too very interested in having an app store of its own. The manufacturer is trying out a store in the UK. In the said store you’ll find full length movies and an Application Seller Site portal. The portal will allow Symbian and Windows Mobile developers to sell their apps to Samsung customers. The portal will be open in the following weeks as Samsung will launch the Samsung Application Store in Europe this September. Other markets should also get access to the store but that’s also to be announced.

In case you’re a developer then you should sign up for the new site portal for just $1. After that you’ll be able to start selling apps soon. Now that Samsung has entered this app store frenzy we can’t but wonder who’s next. Any hints?

Sure some people would love running BlackBerry’s OS on Nokia’s E71x but that’s simply not going to happen anytime soon. But then again you might spot the E71x in an AT&T ad, like the one above, running BlackBerry OS. The ad has been seen in a local AT&T store and it looks like those people doing all the photoshopping for AT&T don’t exactly care much about mobile operating systems.

  • Another version of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has been approved by the FCC. The 5800i is the version I am talking about and it’s probably going to be headed to China. The 5800i is going to be pretty similar to the regular 5800 version. In terms of features you can expect it to offer you WCDMA 900/2100MHz,quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and WiFi connectivity. That WiFi is a little strange for a Chinese considering that we’ve heard lots of rumors about the WiFi-less iPhone made for China. Or should we assume this 5800i is simply a refresh of the 5800? Are we getting that capacitive screen that was rumored a while ago?

When it comes to identifying mobile phones, rarely would people remember the actual model or series that is tied up to it. Some people would just remember them by terms such as its brand or perhaps distinctive features like “a camera phone” or “quad band”. Now, it looks like Nokia will change all that to put meaning towards proper identification of their phones, something which has severely been overlooked lately.

So what should be done? For Nokia, it all starts from naming them prior to releasing their phones. And this new handset naming scheme will officially be announced at the Nokia World Conference which should put some order and reason as to why handset names are important to this day.

The naming scheme will involve every phone under the Nokia brand. This announcement will coincide with the release of the new devices, the new X, C and S Series. This early, the series of phones will have features that will easily identify them to a certain series.

For example, all E Series would sport a decent messaging client, wi-fi and other important business functionalities that a business user would not want to miss.

This and a lot more are going to be revealed at the Nokia World Conference so don’t miss it!

  • Nokia N97 Mini Spotted

The Nokia N97 is Nokia’s flagship phone, a handset with lots of potential but a handset that might not be available to everyone especially due to its current price tag. That’s probably why Nokia has considered introducing a cheaper Mini N97. And it looks like this Mini version has already been leaked to the press. From what we can see so far in these pictures, the N97 Mini is a little smaller and a little slimmer than the regular phone. But not that mini! We have no idea when this new Nokia phone will arrive and how much it will cost, but we’d definitely like to see what’s inside this cheaper phone.

That’s right folks, the Symbian Foundation needs some help from anyone interested in Nokia’s future open OS! Scott Weiss, the Technology Manager of the Symbian Foundation has opened the UI conversation to the world. A new blog has been created, the “Symbian UI Brainstorm” which accepts suggestions from any interested Symbian lovers. Simply put your thoughts on virtual paper, and send it over. Whether they turn out to be complaints or useful suggestions, they should help the Symbian Foundation create the future Nokia OS.

On a different note, shouldn’t we be alarmed by the fact that the Symbian Foundation desperately needs feedback?

Nokia has decided to go ahead and purchase one more company. This time it’s a German mobile software company called Cellity. Cellity is a small company with only 14 employees which will now be working for Nokia. Cellity’s services and software solutions are focused on managing and syncing contacts between various web services and Nokia will use the team behind Cellity to improve its own social networking capabilities:

Nokia will acquire the Cellity team to strengthen its competencies in the area of social networking

We expect only good things to come out of this and we’d be really interested to know how much Nokia paid for Cellity. Unfortunately that hasn’t been disclosed so far!

    Nokia 6760 Slide for Europe

Nokia has revealed that what is the Nokia Surge for the US will go to Europe and the rest of the world as the Nokia 6760 Slide.  The repacked 6760 Slide actually has one major difference compared to the Surge, although with QWERTY keypads, avid SMS/email users are still the focus on both the devices.  Apart from the same 2.4 inch QVGA display, microSD support, Bluetooth, A-GPS, FM radio with RDS, and Symbian S60 3.2 release operating system, the Slide features a 3.2 megapixel camera (compared to the 2mpx lens on the Surge) and European 3G connectivity with support for GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and HSDPA 2100 networks.  The Nokia 6760 Slide will be available in the third quarter of this year across Europe and Asia at a price of 199 Euros (about $285).
