nokia-5200-fido.jpg

Fido Solutions, a Canadian cellular telephone service provider, is releasing the Nokia 5200 under its banner. Nokia 5200, the budget music phone with a bright color scheme, is offered by Fido for three years at $25 Canadian (about $23 USD). Pretty good deal if you ask me.

The Nokia 5200 is sure to appeal to the fun-loving youth market as it sports a VGA cam, Class 10 EDGE, Bluetooth, and microSD expansion with Nokia’s ubiquitous but solid Series 40 backing up the whole package. Fido even goes further as to throw in a 1GB card.

Great deal! Wouldn’t you say so?

There’s a USB data cable connectivity for syncing with your PC/laptop. As with most other Nokia phones, there’s Bluetooth support as well. The Nokia N95 multimedia computer has just been voted as the European Media Phone for the year 2007-2008. Tough luck for the iPhone. European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA), Europe’s leading association for consumer electronics, praised the Nokia N95 as containing “practically every feature one could imagine in a mobile device.” Additionally, the award citation of the EISA jury goes on to say: “It’s no mere mobile phone and no mere status symbol. Pick up a Nokia N95 and you hold in your hands a state-of-the-art communication tool - the ideal way to remain permanently in touch and on track with the world that surrounds you.”

Nokia N95 with features such as GPS, 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and MPEG4 video capture of up to 30 fps has won the approval of these critics. EISA even highlighted the device’s data access of up to 3.5 Mb/s, advanced web browser, Wi-Fi, microSD slot, and audio reproduction of multiple audio formats.

EISA is a consumer technology awards association, and comprises of nearly 50 prominent Photo, Video, Audio, Home Theater and Mobile Electronics magazines from 18 European countries.

  • Nokia Issues BL-5C Battery Advisory

    desc

Nokia issued a product advisory for the Nokia-branded BL-5C battery - one of the most standard batteries for its cell phones - manufactured by Matsushita Battery of Japan between December 2005 and November 2006. It seems that in rare cases, the battery may experience overheating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge.

The advisory applies to about 46 million batteries (of the more than 300 million BL-5C batteries, including those produced by other manufacturers) manufactured by Matsushita. At this time, there have been about 100 incidents of the overheating reported globally. Thankfully for Nokia, no serious injuries or proerty damage so far. Also, the issue does not affect any other use of the mobile phone.

If you are a concerned customer that doesn’t want an overheated, dislodging battery (who isn’t?) check the battery for a 26-character ID number printed on the battery and determine if it is one among those manufactured by Matsushita between December 2005 and November 2006, and you will get a free replacement battery.

Nokia Mystery 3G Phone Gets FCC Approval

A new Nokia cell phone was approved recently by the almighty FCC. While no details were made available (Nokia had requested short term confidentiality), it appears to be a Nokia 661X series device - at least from the FCC label anyway.

The only information available as of this writing is that it is a GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz quad-band phone that also supports WCDMA, and is compatible with EGPRS and GPRS. Bluetooth is also available on the phone. The phone also supports a micro-USB data cable for data sync.

As usual, no word on the pricing or availability of this phone, but thanks to the FCC seal, it should be on its way soon.

News has just been released that the N95, Nokia’s flagship phone, is now available through the 3 store. However, the downside is that it is not available on a 12-month contract. The prices of the handset will vary ranging from £15 Price Plan up to £35 Price Plans. The higher price plans mean zero charge for the handset.

The Nokia N95 is part of the company’s Nseries line of smartphones. The N95’s features include standard features of s60 3rd edition platform with feature pack 1. The phone utilizes a two-way slider allowing access to media playback buttons or a keypad, but not both simultaneously.

The N95 is also compatible with the whole Three X-Series software suite. For some who don’t know about it, X-Series from 3 is a mobile broadband offering. It is priced like fixed line broadband. X-Series customers are charged a fixed monthly subscription, which in addition to ordinary calling minutes and texts, includes X-Series mobile broadband services, including normal internet access when mobile.

So for all of you out there, it’s finally out, so you can probably start lining up and try to get one right now.

There has been several advertisement coming out of Google concerning a new Nokia N81. From the pictures we see, we can quickly conclude that it is both a mobile phone and media player rolled into one. Of course a lot of mobile devices have already incorporated this functionality but this is quite intriguing as no details have been released about it yet.

Everyone has to see for himself though as this is one of those viral campaigns wherein users are given clues about an upcoming product, but never really given the complete set of information.

As seen on the site, there is a sort of countdown timer. Thus, we will all have to wait and expect some sort of details or press release about this product in a few weeks (or months) from now. The domain has been registered to a company in the U.K. known as Lightmaker, they appear to be a web design company, so no info can be gleaned from this info.

Anyway, you can see the site for yourself here.

300px-Nokia_N95_DarlaMackFlickr.jpgEver wondered how many units Nokia has sold? Well, today, Nokia confirmed that it has sold over 100 million cellphones this spring, solidifying its dominance of the global cellphone business. The results for this year is significantly higher than the result of last year by 29 percent. This growth was attributed to its dominance in smartphone sales. Over 9 million N-series and 2 million E-series were sold. Their front line phone is the Nokia N95 smartphone.

This result placed Nokia ahead of Samsung, Motorola, Sony-Ericsson and LG. Apple on the other hand, with its iPhone, needs to catch up with this mobile phone giants. Apple chief Steve Jobs projected that the company will sell about 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008, or about 1 percent of the market as it was in 2006.

But experts predict that Apple will play a major role in the market with their iPhone. “The iPhone is likely to have a disproportionately large impact on the industry,” IDC mobile director Shiv Bakhshi said. “It could forever alter the structural relationship between device vendors and mobile operators who have traditionally controlled the mobile environment, especially in the US.”

  • Writing a book is not an easy thing to do, which many authors can attest to, which is what makes this man’s particular feat even more impressive. Italian author Robert Bernocco has just published the world’s first book written entirely using a mobile phone. That had to be painful. He published the book on Lulu.com, a site where anyone can publish their own book for print.

Bernocco’s book was no small one either - in the end, it was an impressive 384 page science fiction novel. He wrote it taking advantage of down time, such as while commuting to and from work by train. He wrote the entire book using a Nokia 6630, utilizing the phones T9 typing system. The title of the finished book was Compagni di Viaggo, which translates to Fellow Travelers in English.

Bernocco wrote the entire novel in perfect Italian, not any kind of typical mobile slang that we’re all used to. He divided the work up into short paragraphs, and saved them on his phone. He would then download them on to his home computer for editing and proofreading. Writing the book took him just 17 weeks to complete.

Of the feat, Bernocco said: “Only a few years ago I would have struggled to find both the time and the publisher to enable me to create this book. Thanks to my Nokia and Lulu, I am now proud to be a published author.”

    Nokia A-GPS

Ah, here’s something that’s going to be really useful for those of you with a Nokia N95 cell phone: Nokia announced an Assisted GPS (A-GPS) service that helps Nokia Maps users to find their location faster.

The service reduces the Time To First Fix or TTFF (ah, I love this industry and its acronyms) for most geographical locations worldwide, which basically enhances the usability of your N95 or Nokia 6110 Navigator.

Download it from http://www.nokia.com/softwareupdate, to update the firmware on the device to the latest version. Of course, it’s interesting to note that the A-GPS service uses your data network, so although the framework is free from Nokia, your provider may still decide that you need special privileges (i.e., paid) to use it.
