  • Nokia Turns Greener

Other than acquiring Trolltech, Nokia has made another big announcement. Nokia has always been an environment-conscious company and it has reinforced its green reputation by joining the WWF Climate Savers program. The company aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions as well as improving their energy efficiency by halving stand-by energies utilized by chargers when not in use. This move is in part of Nokia’s Climate Change Strategy. This might mean more “green” patents to come. It’ll be very interesting what Nokia would come up with to comply with their joining the WWF Climate Savers program.

  • Nokia Acquires Trolltech

    Qtopia Greenphone

Whoa, this is news! Nokia announced that they have agreed to acquire Trolltech ASA, the Oslo-based company behind Qt technology as well as the Qtopia Greenphone. Citing that Trolltech’s “talented team will play an important role in accelerating the implementation of Nokia’s software strategy,” Nokia will offer Norwegian Krone (NOK) 16, or about US $2.93, per share in cash. Boardmembers and Trolltech shareholders have undertaken to accept the offer.

Nokia is aiming to boost its cross-platform layers such as the Web runtime, Flash, Java and Open C. Trolltech products will continue to receive support. Qtopia has made its appearance in mobile handsets, video phones, set-top boxes as well as media players, while Qt is in use in Skype, Google Earth and Adobe Photoshop Elements.

This is an interesting move from Nokia. We’ll have to wait and see if there is going to be an impact on the Symbian ecosystem, of which Nokia holds a 47.9% share.

  • Remember that news about Finnish mobile phone company, Nokia, fleeing out of Germany? During that time, reports indicate that the company and the leaders of the 2,300 erstwhile workers who suddenly saw themselves jobless were arranging an amicable settlement. Amicable would be the last word I can use for what’s happening right now. The Germans are enraged, accusing Nokia of “caravan capitalism,” and going so far as to vowing to replace their Nokia handsets.

Union leaders called for Nokia products boycott and politicians jumped on the bandwagon–Social Democrats head, Peter Struck, and Horst Seehofer, Consumer and Agriculture Minister, are reportedly replacing their Nokia handsets. Nokia’s decision to leave Germany would apparently strike a blow to the country’s telecommunications sector.

Outside the Nokia plant in Bochum Germany, a crying worker named Patsiou Dimitva was spotted saying, “All our hope has died. Only a miracle can help us now but I don’t think there will be any.”

  • WordPress Application for the Nokia N95

It’s a jolly jolly month indeed, for mobile phone lovers who also love to blog. Telewaving has developed a new WordPress application called “Wavelog” (yes, yes, the pun kills me!) which lets you post entries on your WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress blogs via the Nokia N95. The application enables you to post text, upload audios, videos and images onto your blog using any network connection. If you’re currently in a dead spot, you can just save your entry as draft for a while until you get back your network coverage. A trial version for the Nokia N95 is available for free via the Telewaving web site, although using it will only let you post text entries. If you want to upload and post music, video and image files, however, you need to purchase the license for US$10, which isn’t so bad, considering you get to spend your idle time blogging instead of senseless daydreaming.

  • Nokia Fleeing Out Of Germany

nokia_logo.jpegNokia has recently announced that they will be moving out of Germany for good. By moving out we meant Nokia is going to lay-off a massive 2,300 employees. The company said the move was due to market changes and the need for running a more cost-effective business. As such, Nokia is moving to lower-cost European neighboring countries. Aside from the cell phone plant itself, Nokia is also selling their automotive plant as well as a software research and development entity. As of current, Nokia is still negotiating with employee representatives to reach some kind of amicable settlement.

  • Nokia%20S60%20Touch1.jpg
Due to the iPhone’s success, the demand for touch phones by the consumer market has increased. Due to this, not only do copycats try to mimic the iPhone but big corporations try to surpass its popularity. Nokia, however, promises to bring a new flavor to touch phones. Details about the Nokia S60 Touch were unearthed and what was discovered impresses us. The new patent indicates that the Nokia S60 Touch won’t even require you to actually touch the screen. The technology is designed so that the phone would recognize 3D gestures made in mid-air. Think “delete” when you gesture an “x” or “verify” when you gesture a “check.” The pic above features the list of gestures which could be used such as scroll, zoom, run, switch, copy, etcetera. As of current, it’s just a patent, so we don’t know if we’ll actually see it happen. But we’d like to remain optimistic and hope that we’d live to see the 3D gesture control multi-touch screen in our lifetime.

    Read the patent.
