Hot iPhone apps are easy to spot. They are normally the ones which are downloaded by most people once they get to the Apple App Store. But if you talk about seeing 500,000 downloads in just 40 days, you have to agree that there is something about the app that makes it hot!

Rock Your Phone announced today users of its service downloaded over 500,000 applications in the first 40 days of operations. The new service allows customers to trial and purchase applications that extend and enhance the current iPhone capabilities beyond what is available via the Apple iPhone App Store.

Rock Your Phone created the first full-service alternative iPhone App Store to distribute pioneering applications. “We allow developers to use their full creativity to develop applications, rather then tip-toe through a restrictive and vague approval process. IntelliScreen, which is not allowed in the Apple App Store, enables users to glance at their iPhone and view a summary of current emails, text messages, calendar, news, sports, and weather on the lock screen. While the iPhone is a great entertainment device, when it’s time for business, users prefer the productivity and efficiency that IntelliScreen provides.” said Mario Ciabarra, Chief Technology Officer and company founder.

With free 10-day trials on every application, Rock Your Phone stands behind its service with a love-it or leave-it attitude. Rock Your Phone’s current catalog of only 9 applications has pursued quality applications, rather then quantity. Ciabarra said, “We’re focused on delivering innovative applications that solve business problems. With a ‘try before you buy’ policy, applications that don’t deliver simply don’t make sense for our platform.”

The Rock Your Phone catalog already contains features that Apple intends to provide in the next major release of the iPhone, including cut and paste and landscape text messaging.

Peggle for iPhones Now Available

PopCap games has launched a new game app for iPhone owners with Peggle. The game is available now for US $4.99 from Apple’s App Store on iPhone and iPod touch, or at www.itunes.com/appstore/. One of the most critically acclaimed “casual” video games of recent years, Peggle has been downloaded nearly 50 million times and appeals to gamers of all shapes and sizes.

Combining elements of pinball and pachinko, Peggle players fire a metallic silver ball from the top of the screen, relying on gravity to propel the ball downwards while it ricochets off unique arrangements of orange and blue pegs. The goal is to clear all the orange pegs from the screen, while earning as many points as possible, before running out of balls.

A moving bucket at the bottom of the screen offers free balls, while green power-up pegs unlock special abilities via ten unique and memorable Peggle Masters who guide players through dozens of levels of gameplay challenges. Power-ups include explosive area-clearing blasts, lobster claws that serve as pinball-like flippers and “fireballs” that cut through all pegs in their path.

Exclusive to the iPhone and iPod touch versions of Peggle, the game boasts a host of specifically optimized features. These include a special ‘zoom’ feature for extra-accurate aiming, new types of style shots, a special aiming wheel for precision control, a new trophy system, and an enhanced UI to take advantage of the Touch and iPhone’s intuitive touch interface.

These integrations expand on iLike’s existing syndication model and enable more than 300,000 artists who use the iLike Artist Dashboard to save time and reach more fans via these new channels.

The new content syndication destinations announced today, described in detail at www.iLike.com/manage, include:

  • Facebook Pages “Music” Tab: Artists can now add the Music tab to their Page on Facebook. The Music tab, by iLike, features the artist’s songs, concerts, videos, bulletins, blogs, and tweets.
  • Artist dot-com Websites: The iLike Artist Dashboard now allows artists to manage the content on their own official dot-com websites via embeddable javaScript widgets.
  • Ticketmaster: Songs, photos, and videos posted to the iLike Dashboard will also appear on the artist’s page on Ticketmaster.
  • Artist iPhone Apps: iLike today announced a turnkey system to enable any artist to rapidly create and distribute their own iPhone app featuring the artist’s concert dates, photos, blogs, bulletins, and videos. A self-service system allows artists to customize the look and feel of their app and submit it to the iTunes App Store.

In addition, iLike continues to syndicate artist content to more than 45 million music fans across the iLike network, including iLike’s leading music applications on iGoogle, Facebook, hi5, Bebo, Orkut, and iLike plugins for iTunes and Windows Media Player.

It is apparent that at some point, most of us have to acknowledge that mobile devices and cell phones are more than just gadgets that we want to show off to others. They have their uses and while features may not be important at times, cell phones have already proven that they can be a critical key in life and death situations.

Today we see technology move cell phones towards delivering the goods. Mobile phones have become more than just for texting and making calls. It has gone to the extent of invading the medical scene, some of which you can see below.

Here is an iPhone app that may evidently force you to spend more time in the comfort room rather than have fun at the bar. Drunk Sniper offers us a hilariously but fun iPhone app that allows users to play while they pee. You just have to point the iPhone towards the toilet bowl or whichever place you plan to unload that liquid body waste and you’re off!

The app is plainly for the men though. Guys just have to make use of their male organs to do so. And before you go on pissing away, don’t forget to load up with a couple of beers to make sure you get to the next levels. Green but fun!

The new iPhone will be an even better machine for media content which means you will be able to enjoy even more video shows. But what about streaming video to, say, a home cinema system?

Apple has a new patent “Media out interface” which we might see implemented soon. According to it the iPhone should be capable of streaming video content from the dock to a TV monitor. The handset will be controlled with the TV/Apple remote and that remote will also let you answer and end incoming calls. Of course the whole playback will be stopped every time you’re making a call.

That’s basically how everything should work but we have no idea when these new features will be available. Maybe this June?

Microsoft Pink Comes with Features

We’re still recovering from that earlier Zune phone news and now we have to deal with another Microsoft project, the Pink, which, from the looks of it, it’s a smartphone. Now the Pink has some features available. The phone will have a 3.5-inch or even larger multitouch display, an ARM v6+ processor, OpenGL ES 2.0-compatible graphics, 256MB of RAM and 1GB or more of storage. We can also expect a 3 megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, a compass and an accelerometer. Think we’re done yet? We have even more leaked details for you! NVIDIA’s Tegra platform is also going to be part of the Pink project. TI’s OMAP 3 platform and Qualcomm 8k are also listed. Will Microsoft use all three of them?

That’s how Windows 7 Chasis 1 smartphones will look like but we can’t say for certain how will Microsoft bundle all those specs. According to previous rumors the Pink is not a phone but a project meant to bring Zune software and services to Windows Mobile. Should we assume that Windows Mobile 7 will come with lots of Pink features inside? Let’s hear it Mr. Ballmer? What will it be?

Vodafone to Launch Own App Store

I guess you’re not cool anymore these days if you can’t offer your own app store to your customers. Vodafone has just joined the club as it has announced its application store. According to Vodafone the store will contain “mobile internet applications and services”, which doesn’t exactly sound like a regular store. Vodafone will have a SDK and a set of APIs this summer ready for software developers. Vodafone is ready to “provide partners and developers with customer controlled access to other network capabilities, such as location awareness, enabling them to create even more innovative mobile internet services and applications” so those future Vodafone apps might be quite useful in the future. And let’s not forget that Vodafone has almost 300 million subscribers to please.

The mobile market is just about to get hotter than it already is. A new open source project has just been launched today by Intel and Nokia. The oFono project will apparently be a Linux-based OS meant to compete against Android. Considering the names behind it we should assume that oFono will have a bright future.

The new OS will be used in various smartphones and mobile devices. It will be able to connect to GSM/UMTS networks, it will make calls, access the SIM card and it will have support for various mobile apps. We are really anxious to see a phone running on this new OS but we have no idea when that’s going to happen.

Here’s what the first blog post says about oFono:

Intel and Nokia are pleased to jointly announce the oFono project, an open source project for developing an open source telephony solution.

oFono.org is a place to bring developers together around designing an infrastructure for building mobile telephony (GSM/UMTS) applications.…

oFono is licensed under GPLv2, and it includes a high-level D-Bus API for use by telephony applications of any license. oFono also includes a low-level plug-in API for integrating with Open Source as well as third party telephony stacks, cellular modems and storage back-ends. The plug-in API functionality is modeled on public standards, in particular 3GPP TS 27.007 “AT command set for User Equipment (UE).”

Nokia and Intel will jointly maintain the oFono project. We’d like to invite all developers to join the ofono.org effort and community.

Anyone excited about the new OS?

The iPhone or the iPod Touch is the last contraption you would consider giving you peace and sleep. But it can be possible if you get an app that can do so. Apparently, the iPhone has one available over at the Apple App Store and this application is the “A Good Night’s Sleep”.

Mobile Frontiers newest application “A Good Night’s Sleep” gently awakens users, ensuring the gradual, peaceful start to each day. A Good Night’s Sleep also guarantees users a relaxing end to every night with its feature of allowing users to set a series of sleep sounds or music.

Although there is a vast array of applications currently being offered either as sleep enhancers, clocks or wake up alarms on the iTunes store, there is nothing that compares to A Good Night’s Sleep as it incorporates all of these, and enhances them, to produce the perfect solution for A Good Night’s Sleep.

This is the ONLY application of its kind on the iTunes store; no other application utilizes our unique and exclusive process of gradually allowing users to WAKE and sleep, peacefully and gradually, the way they want!

A Good Night’s Sleep is currently available at an introductory price of only $1.99 but the sale ends soon.

Mafia Wars on iPhone

It looks llike Mafia Wars is going great guns and has made its way to the world of iPhones. However, one thing you should note is that it is not linked to Facebook, the online network where it gained much popularity. Now isn’t that intriguing?

The Facebook app on the iPhone / iPod Touch is a killer. And one of the most popular Facebook games - Mafia by Zynga is here on the iPhone for free. But the only thing I hate is that the iPhone version is not linked to your Facebook profile. So you cant continue playing your Facebook Mafia via the iPhone app.

Rowmote for iPhones Now Available

It was once bundled with a variety of Mac models but is now an optional accessory to the iPhone. This is of course the Apple Remote Control, providing iPhone owners the remote capabilities to control a broader variety of applications.

Rowmote is an iPhone/iPod touch application that mimics the operation of the Apple Remote, complete with Plus, Minus, Back, Forward, Play/Pause, and Menu buttons. It works in tandem with the free , which you install on your Mac. Once that application is installed it’s automatically added to your account’s list of login applications so that it’s ready to do your iPhone or iPod touch’s bidding even after you’ve restarted your Mac.

What makes Rowmote particularly special–other than that you don’t need line-of-sight access or you computer because it works over Wi-Fi–is that it supports far more applications than Apple’s hardware Remote Control. The list of supported applications includes Front Row, Boxee, DVD Player, EyeTV, Finder, iTunes, iTunes Visualizer, iPhoto, Keynote, PowerPoint, QuickTime, Plex, Skim, Spotify, VLC, Airfoil Video Player, PandoraJam, XBMC, and Last.fm.

You choose an application by tapping an Applications button at the bottom of the screen. A Settings button to the left of that Applications button lets you choose the computer you want to control.
