In a few days, households may be worried sick about keeping track of where their little tykes may be going. With Halloween promising to provide a lot candies and goodies, safety becomes a concern for parents. But thanks to Sprint, Michigan and Indiana folks can keep track of where there little ones are going with the Family Locator service that costs only $5 a month to use. This special service was made possible by GPS technology with real-time satellites that allow parents to know specifically where their kids are via mobile phone or a computer. It is password protected thus limiting access to authorized users only.

Sony Ericsson has been working on at least an Android phone so far and it looks like the manufacturer is ready to launch one. Whether it’s the Xperia X3 also known as the Rachael or the Xperia X10, Sony Ericsson’s first Android phone is supposed to arrive on November 3. Pricing and details aren’t confirmed at this point so we’ll return next week with all the official info.

The Rachael could be at least as good as the Droid but unfortunately for Sony Ericsson Motorola’s and Verizon’s marketing campaigns made sure that anyone interested in Android phones will want to buy the Droid. What do you think folks? Will Sony Ericsson be successful in its Android venture?

Early last week we showed you a device that was reportedly an unannounced HTC manufactured Android phone and had virtually no details as to what it was. Today, we have word that this device is to be called the HTC Passion and will hit Verizon towards the end of this year and feature a 1GHz Snapdragon processor.

Unfortunately, that’s all we know for now but we’ll be sure to keep you posted.

eviGroup has today announced an all new 10-inch tablet which they are calling the Pad. Sure, it’s not the fabled iTablet, but it does have 3G and an artificial intelligent digital secretary/assistant that’s sure to get annoying after a few days of use.

Other than that it features a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, WiFi, VGA, port 3 USB ports, multicard reader, webcam and microphone.

There wasn’t a mention of a release date but eviGroup is saying the device will be priced below 500.

We thought that Barnes and Noble’s eBook reader, the Nook, will hit Amazon hard but we were in for quite a surprise. Amazon intends to make sure that both PC and Mac users will be able to buy all the eBooks they want without actually having to order the Kindle. Or the Nook! We heard about PC support for Amazon eBooks earlier this week and now we hear that Amazon has big plans for Mac owners. A Kindle App for Mac is currently being developed but we have no idea when Amazon will release it.

I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t wear such a working Apple iPhone costume. Not only is it way too big to carry around the party but you might also break it. Not to mention that it shows everything your iPhone does. And what happens if someone decides to steal the extra large iPhones?

The Halloween costumes feature each a car battery, a 42-inch LCD TV and a little iPhone OS tweaking needed to connect the iPhone to the LCD. Each costume weighs 85 pounds and costs around $1,000 to make, so while creators Reko and Bobby will definitely wear them we will gladly look for other costume ideas. What are you going to wear?

  • Mobile Phones and Cancer Linked

We have heard this claim before. Too much exposure and use of mobile handsets may lead to cancer. Mobile phone companies have denied this of course, coming out with their own share of studies on the radiation that mobile handsets emit. However a $30 million study may have finally stumbled upon the truth in linking mobile phones and cancer.

This decade-long study has discovered how long-term use of mobile phones are linked to brain tumors. This study by the World Health Organization is expected to be released soon but as early as now, mobile phone users may want to re-think how often and how much they use their cellular phones.

We suspected this was going to happen and we might see the universal phone charger standard appear sooner then we think. The International Telecommunication Union, which is a branch of the UN, has approved the microUSB as a future universal phone charger.

Why does the UN care about phone chargers? It all comes down to waste and pollution. A universal charger would save 51,000 tons of waste if it were already in use. That’s why the UN cares so much about the charging standard. Unfortunately the universal charging solution will fully be adopted by 2012 which means that we’re looking at even more unnecessary waste that could have been avoided! At least we’re hoping that by that time most carriers and cell phone makers out there will switch to the UCS.

    Windows Computer Spotted on TV

There’s no such thing as a Windows computer is it? Let alone a Microsoft made laptop! We would have surely heard about its existence already since most gadgets out there get leaked long before being officially unveiled.

However 30 Rock is clearly showing the device in question and the Windows logo is definitely recognizable. So what happened to all the Apple products on the show? Is 30 Rock celebrating the release of Windows 7 too? Whatever the case is, the computer in the picture here is definitely not a Mac wearing a Windows Logo.

What do you think? Will we see Steve Ballmer announce Microsoft computers soon?

The New York Times has an interesting article talking about Cell Refuseniks which is what it calls those people that refuse to use a cell phone. Can you believe that’s happening? In this modern day and age where communication is so important, the cell phone is no longer a luxury item but a necessity. We want to talk to our friends, send SMS messanges and emails, Twitter and update Facebook profiles as often as possible. Cell phones can get us out of various jams and I wouldn’t leave the house without my handest. But not everybody will agree with me!

I will have to admit that I was such a person a long long while ago. I saw cell phones as the enemy, a thing that will allow others to track me down whenever they felt like it. And I certainly didn’t want that. But now I can’t imagine not having a cell phone around.

How about you? Have you ever considered not using a cell phone anymore?

    Motorola Droid Shows GSM Features

The Droid might be a Verizon Wireless exclusive phone in the USA but that doesn’t mean that Motorola shouldn’t sell in other markets too. After all the Droid is probably going to be one of the best Android phones around and I’m pretty sure that Motorola will want to cash in on all that hotness.

The FCC has revealed exactly such a version of the Droid that could be used all around the GSM world. What’s more interesting is that the GSM Droid has support for AT&T’s WCDMA 850 and 1900MHz bands which also happen to be used by carriers in Canada. Not that Verizon will share the Droid with AT&T any time soon! But Rogers, Bell and Telus will probably want to launch the phone in the following months or, dare we say, in the following weeks?

Will you buy the Droid next week from Verizon or are you waiting for a GSM version of it?

LTE is getting closer and closer and Samsung is getting ready for the new telecommunication standard. The Korean company has already developed another LTE USB modem and the FCC is currently reviewing it. Unfortunately we have no details about the device and we don’t even have a name for it. Listed as the A3LSLCU100, this LTE modem could be one of Kalmia’s brothers. No pictures of the devices are available at this point as Samsung has a 180 days confidentiality window that begun on September 24. That means we will be in for a long wait until we’re going to see the A3LSLCU100 in the flesh. Anyone excited about LTE yet?

    BlackBerry OS 5.0 Coming Tomorrow?

You must already be aware that some of RIM’s latest toys will be running BlackBerry OS 5.0 from the first day. So what happens to everyone else that won’t get a BlackBerry 9700 Bold or the BlackBerry Storm 2 in the following weeks? Well we have great news for you. RIM is apparently going to make OS 5.0 available in the near future for everyone that currently owns one of the other BlackBerry smartphones.

Verizon Wireless will be the first carrier to make the BlackBerry OS 5.0 available to BlackBerry Storm owners. Starting with tomorrow evening, or Monday at the latest, OS 5.0 will be available to Storm users so get your phones in order. You’ll also need Desktop Manager installed on your computer as this OS update is not coming over the air.

An interesting piece of news has popped all over the Internet. It looks like the Droid is not just the name of a single phone coming from Verizon but it’s going to be a line of phones. That’s why the Sholes has changed names so abruptly to the Droid. The phone in the picture is supposed to be the HTC Droid Eris also known as the HTC Desire.

The Droid Eris is supposed to arrive on November 6 but evidently we don’t have any pricing for now. We also have to confirm all of these before we get all excited about a new phone line. Because it looks like the Droid might be an Android phone line about to arrive from Verizon.

Verizon hasn’t announced the BlackBerry Storm 2 although Vodafone did. What’s more strange, Verizon seems to want to start selling the BlackBerry Storm 2 on October 28 which is precisely the day when Big Red and Motorola are going to unveil to the world the Motorola Droid.

Will the BlackBerry Storm 2 live in the shadow of the Droid? The phone will be available for $179.99 after $100 mail-in rebate with a 2-year contract. 1-year contracts will also be available but the price for the Storm 2 will go to up to $249.99. The smartphone will also be available without a contract for $539.99 and it all starts on October 28.

The following question is pretty obvious, so here it goes, what are you going to purchase on October 28? The Motorola Droid or the BlackBerry Storm 2.

You have to admit it, the video above is a work of art. Sure it’s a commercial / viral video made by Vodafone NZ but it’s still amazing. This Symphonia experiment uses 1000 cellphones that are syncing 53 different ringtone alerts from 2000 sent messages. The final result is the 1812 overture from Tchaikovsky which makes this endeavor all the more interesting.

In case you loved the whole show then you can go ahead and download it from Vodafone New Zealand’s by following the link below. You can get the full track of Symphonia but you can also get the 53 ringtones used to create the overture. Although we do advise you not to try to recreate the experiment at home if you don’t have 1,000 phones yet.

Motorola seems to have a lot of fun rolling out one Android phone after the other. We’ve already seen the CLIQ, the Droid and the Calgary. And today we spotted the Motorola Zeppelin, a phone which is apparently heading to China.

The phone is not official yet but it’s said to come with a 3.1-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen, a 5-megapixel camera with flash, WiFi, dual SIM slots for GSM and CDMA SIM cards, HDMI connectivity and Android OS. The phone should be available in China in the first quarter of 2010 while everyone else should get it at some point later next year. Pricing is unknown but we’ll definitely return with more news soon.
