ASUS G1S Notebook

G1.gif

The G1S is one of Asus‘ first Intel Santa Rosa notebooks. It’s not the screamer machine serious gamers are hoping for, but mainstream users who happen to enjoy gaming will find a lot to like with this system. The Asus G1S looks the part of a gaming notebook, with a mix of matte-black and high-gloss carbon fiber plastic that does a decent job of resisting smudges and fingerprints. A carbon-fiber print covers the touchpad, while brushed aluminum highlights the touchpad buttons and palm-rest area. Lime-green accents behind the built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam offset the darker colors well.

At 13.9 x 11.2 x 1.5 inches and 6.8 pounds, the G1S is small for a gaming machine but still manages to squeeze in a full-sized keyboard and a 15.4-inch screen. The 1680 x 1050-pixel, 15.4-inch LCD is well suited for movie watching, gaming, Web surfing, and general computer work. Graphics via Nvidia’s 8600m GT with 256MB of dedicated memory and Windows Vista Home Premium allows for DirectX 10 gaming.

Intel’s 2.2-GHz Core 2 Duo T7500 with the Next Generation Centrino chipset (Santa Rosa) and 2GB of DDR2 PC2-5300 RAM helped the G1S earn a PCMark05 score of 5,244 and a 3DMark03 score of 6,061. This graphics score is considerably lower than its predecessor’s 10,012 on 3DMark03, which makes us wonder how much Santa Rosa really makes up for Vista’s shortcomings.

Everyone has waited for the Sidekick 4 AKA the Shuriken for quite some time now. The Sidekick is going to be the true successor to the Sidekick 3, as opposed to some tangential compromise like the Sidekick iD. There has been rumors about the design and features of the Sidekick 4 that I’m sure all of you out there won’t pass up.

If these rumors spread around is correct, then the Sidekick 4 will have a wide screen that fills out the entire middle section of the device. It would probably still have the same set (and face) of buttons as the Sidekick 3. It would also feature a 1.3 megapixel camera and a MicroSD slot.

Aside from that, early reports indicated that the Sidekick 4 has been assigned the model number “PV250,” way above the Sidekick 3’s “PV200,” which means that the Shuriken will be the next generation Sidekick that everyone should get excited about.

There has been several advertisement coming out of Google concerning a new Nokia N81. From the pictures we see, we can quickly conclude that it is both a mobile phone and media player rolled into one. Of course a lot of mobile devices have already incorporated this functionality but this is quite intriguing as no details have been released about it yet.

Everyone has to see for himself though as this is one of those viral campaigns wherein users are given clues about an upcoming product, but never really given the complete set of information.

As seen on the site, there is a sort of countdown timer. Thus, we will all have to wait and expect some sort of details or press release about this product in a few weeks (or months) from now. The domain has been registered to a company in the U.K. known as Lightmaker, they appear to be a web design company, so no info can be gleaned from this info.

Anyway, you can see the site for yourself here.

    iTheme for S60 3rd Edition

itheme_menu.jpgA lot of us can’t have an iPhone. The fact that its service is monopolized by telecommunication giant AT&T, disallows just anybody - specially those in other countries outside the US - from getting the iPhone. But tech geeks won’t have that as an excuse. So, to enjoy the cool new interface of the iPhone, they developed an new theme for the S60 3rd edition.

This form of customization goes way beyond basic theme creation. The V-Theme uses the function of Flash to transform your s60 device into an iPhone-like UI.

The iTheme requires Flash 2.0 and above. It replaces your main standby and menu screens and comes with 3 pre-installed skins. The icons are self explanatory so you can figure out how to maneuver around. This is done by using the nav-key of your device. There are 2 menu screens that you can use. The main menu screen consists of customizable icons. Meaning that if you click on these icons, for example ‘Mail Tools’, you will be able to add your mail applications there in list format. If you click on basic you will be able to open targeted locations by clicking that particular icon.

iphone1.jpgEverybody wants an iPhone. When it was released last June 29, 2007 in the United States from Apple Retail Stores, consumers have been buying it left and right, wanting to get the latest gadget from Apple. Reports of iPhone shipment volumes in the first weekend have ranged from 140 thousand units to 500 thousand units. Meanwhile, ABI Research forecasts that the smartphone market segment will grow from 218 million units in 2007 to 426 million units in 2012.

There are several people who would dare ask whether the iPhone can indeed change the smartphone market. With the smartphone market dominated by big fishes like Nokia and Samsung, only time (and sales) will tell if the speculations are true.

However, according to Stuart Carlaw, wireless research director at ABI Research, the answer is a qualified “yes.”

“The iPhone will not revolutionize the smartphone market,” he says, “but it is a significant evolutionary step forward. As was pointed out once its specifications were made public, the iPhone is not cutting-edge telecommunications. Where it is radical – in its user-interface and functionality – it will certainly change forever the way handset manufacturers think about their design philosophies. And from the commercial point of view, it is significant in the way it assembles its offerings in a completely integrated, brand-heavy package.”
