Psystar Rolls out the Big Guns

I guess this is for all Apple haters out there. Psystar, or the company selling PC with Mac OS, has called Carr & Ferrell, or the lawyers that already managed to squeeze $10 million from Apple and $60 million from Microsoft in similar cases before, to defend them against Apple, or the company pissed off at Psystar. Well pissed enough to sue Psystar for all they’ve got.

Here’s a rather displeasing rumor following Steve’s Ballmer’s wet dream of developing a Zune Phone. Some sources claim that Nokia will carry Zune content. Why in the world would anything like that happen? Nokia is the leader of cell phone manufacturers across the world. They have a well established market share that’s growing each quarter. They have their own Symbian OS which not only will improve in the future but it’s also rumored to merge with Google’s Android.

Zune Phone in the Works?

A Zune phone was rumored for a long time in the mobile world with Windows always having to deny such a device. But something strange happened. Steve Ballmer, whom you might know from his eggs ducking experiences and whose hobby is pretending to a qualified Microsoft CEO, is getting ready for a new fiscal year. And he wants it to be a more like Apple year.

  • LG has other products out there besides cell phones. You shouldn’t be that surprise to find the new XD1 portable hard drives while browsing for extra storage solution. Not only do they look good but they also promise a lot. They are only 2.5 inch long and they have a SATA II interface. The USB 2.0 E-SATA port can transfer files for up to 480MBps. The XD1 portable hard drive will come in four versions: 120, 160, 250 and 320GB.

What do we have here? It’s not just a keyboard, it’s a rumored Microsoft keyboard. It’s supposed to be called SideWinder X6. What does it have to offer? Well, besides the programmable keys, there’s a detachable numeric keypad which can go either on the left or on the right side of the keyboard. There’s also a cruise control thing which is supposed to “emulate a steady keypress”. Wonder why I would need that? Would it let me type faster?

I guess it’s not a surprise to hear that Microsoft is interested in Yahoo again. What’s that, the third or fourth time they are considering striking a deal with Yahoo? But hey, who’s counting anyhow, right? How do you think Google is feeling about that? After all they wanted a piece of Yahoo too…

Don’t go feeling all deja-vu just yet. Microsoft has something new in mind this time. Apparently they don’t feel comfortable in a monogamous relationship and they’re turning to NewsCorp or Time Warnder for a kinky threesome deal. While Microsoft will acquire everything that’s involved in the Yahoo Search business, the other potential partner will get everything else.

And all this comes in a moment in which Google’s advertising deal with Yahoo is under investigation. The US department of Justice isn’t happy with all that happy about such an anti-competitive agreement.

  • Microsoft recently unveiled its new series of LifeCam webcams. The Whack received the LifeCam VX-5000for review. The VX-5000 offers convenience and is portable enough not to interfere with your work. The striking thing about the VX-5000 is the bendable base, making it easy to place it on a desktop monitor or fix it to a laptop. The camera is available three different colors: blue, green and red (we received the blue one for review).

Setting up the camera was a breeze. The installation of the bundled software went smoothly and the webcam was up and running within 10 minutes of opening the package. However, it took considerably more time to open the package itself.

When logged in to the Windows Live messenger, clicking the button on top of the camera starts a Windows Live Call: it loads your contact list, and you have to select one to start a conversation with. There’s a unidirectional, noise-canceling mic on the Lifecam VX-5000. As can be expected, the webcam is optimized for Windows Live but works pretty well with others like Yahoo! IM and Skype. In low-light conditions, the video was less than desirable quality, but once you switched on the lights, the quality was pretty good.

For some reason, the default resolution for still photos was set to 640×480 (VGA), but you can easily change this to 1.3 megapixels. Even at that resolution, it falls short of some cell phone camera images, but then again this is not your everyday high-end webcam. The software bundled with the camera allows you to add all sorts of goofy stuff to your video conversation (you know what I’m talking about — stupid fish!).

The Photo Swap feature lets you share photos with whoever you are conversing with. There’s also support for one-touch blogging - a feature I did not try because I don’t have a Windows Live Spaces account. The microphone built into the LifeCam VX-5000 works pretty decently. However, I could not find any place where this can be over-ridden with another microphone.

The Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000 is easily a nice-to-have accessory, being in the mid-range of both price and features. Priced at US $49.99, it is actually available for around $37 on Amazon and other online retailers.

    Dell Windows XP
I think you should hurry and get that Dell laptop packed with Windows XP you wanted. Microsoft is going to discontinue XP while trying to shove Vista down our throats. I have nothing against that, after all Microsoft stands for monopoly right? But for God’s sake please make an OS that won’t crash and slow me down. How many times did you say that? How many times did Windows made your PC life miserable?

  • There’s no actual news on Windows Mobile 7 but rumors and speculations so far. Is HTC to release a Windows Mobile 7? According to Kevin Chen, their General Manager for MEA and CIS, HTC is planning a Windows Mobile 7 smartphone to arrive sometime in Q1 2009.

  • Microsoft Dumps Yahoo Again

Microsoft: I want you Yahoo, I only want you, there’s no one else like you! (to himself) Damn you Google!
Yahoo: I want you too Microsoft. I want to bare your children! (to herself) Wait until I get my hands on all your money.

Later on Microsoft dumped Yahoo as Yahoo didn’t want to sign the prenuptial agreement Microsoft had in mind. Imagine our surprise when we saw both Microsoft and Yahoo suffering and trying to work things out. But we aren’t fools, there’s no future in this relationship and everyone knows it. That’s why Microsoft is dumping Yahoo again. Well Yahoo, we’ve warned you that Microsoft was bad news…

  • Do you remember this guy? What’s his name… Bull-something Steve right? Oh Ballmer, Steve, you say, CEO of Microsoft.

This video on YouTube basically circled Earth quite a few times and lots of people got to make fun of Steve Ballmer and Microsoft trying to laugh at the iPhone. I think it was high time someone replaced him but then again, I am just a blogger.

Blu RayMicrosoft is alive. No surprise there. A Blu-Ray Xbox 360 is coming. No surprise there either. We were expecting that to happen. What’s funny is their rumored announcement time. Not only they are going to announce this Xbox 360 tomorrow but they are going to do it one hour prior to the WWDC.

    Windows 7-teen?

    Video: Multi-Touch in Windows 7
The web is full of pictures and news about Windows 7. Apparently Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer have announced it. Isn’t this Windows Seventeen? I must be counting wrong but I am sure there were more versions that 7. Are they skipping Vista? Denial comes first I’ll give them that.

  • Steve Ballmer Misses Eggs

I might have easily said he was dodging them but I’d like to think he has just missed them this time. While in Hungary, Steve Ballmer was giving a speech when he was stopped by a young (student?) man. After quickly babbling something in an almost understandable English about Microsoft and taxpayers money, he went throwing like a girl a couple of eggs, non of which hitting the target.

  • iPhone on Windows Vista

    Vista iPhone
I thought I was having a nightmare for a second there. Why would anyone create a skin based on a Microsoft operating system that not only didn’t work as supposed to but it also tried and failed to copy Apple’s OS. So why on Earth would you do that to your iPhone?

VistaPerfection 2.0 is a Windows Vista skin with icons, wallpapers sound effects, a Sidebar and a Start menu. Would I do it to my iPhone? No I wouldn’t. Would I throw eggs at Steve Ballmer for what he did with Vista and more? Where’s the eggs basket?

How Many Zune Buyers are There?

    zune_1.jpg

In case you don’t know, Microsoft have sold just over 2 million Zunes already. That’s like what, 1 Zune per year? Leaving jokes aside, Microsoft still haven’t really made that much of an impression with this device. Last May they reached their first million and now, after an year, they sold one more million of Zune players. That places them just above Creative and lower than SanDisk and waaaaay below Apple.

Zune will never be an iPod that’s clear, but it will always get some fans around the world. I am sure there are happy customers that enjoy at least this Microsoft product.

    Zune video store_080506.jpg

Microsoft has released their latest Zune software upgrade, and while it finally offers gapless playback and features the return of the playlists, though not quite as robust as they once were, the most notable difference on the Zune itself is the ability to view and play your friends’ playlists directly from your Zune rather than having to run over to your browser, so long as you both are Zune Pass subscribers. This feature takes about 100meg per friend’s card.

Don’t worry if you’re not a Zune Pass subscriber though, you can still see the playlist, you’ll just have to flag the track you dig for purchase later when you get to a computer. And when you do get to your browser, you’ll find that the video store is now full of 4,800 music videos and downloadable TV shows for $2 a pop. You’ll have to stick to YouTube and other social video networks to share original content, for now, but Microsoft has left that particular door open. In fact, the social aspect of the device is increasing dramatically.

  • xps_m1330_red_300.jpg

Big corporate outfits are known to do their big bit in the ongoing battle against social issues afflicting the world today. To date, Microsoft and Dell have chipped in more than 57 million through their (RED) campaign to the ongoing fight against AIDS in Rwanda, Swaziland, and Ghana. In the same vein, the behemoths have now teamed up again to help customers make a difference in the fight against AIDS in Africa offering (RED) branded high-end products.

These products consist of Dell’s premium XPS One (PRODUCT) RED PC, XPS M1330 and M1530 (PRODUCT) RED notebooks, and the 948 All-In-One (PRODUCT) RED printer. All RED PCs and notebooks will be powered Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT) RED, making Microsoft the exclusive partner for all RED-branded Dell products. With each purchase, both the companies will contribute $50-$80 to the Global Fund and $5 Dell contribution for the RED-branded printer. All of the funds will be diverted to Global Fund-financed grants in Africa.
