The Acer Aspire 5520 is a surprising piece of equipment. The quality and the robustness of the case are much better than what anyone would come to expect that comes out of Acer. The design is good too, matte black, curved angles and couple of sharp lines, all this breathes some elegance into this laptop. The case dimensions are 426×366x274 mm, and weight is 2.75kg.
The 5520 is equipped with a dual core AMD Athlon 64 X2 mobile TK-53 processor running at 1.7 GHz with 2×256 kb of cache. Integrated Nvidia GeForce 7000M card is a part of the relatively new nForce 610M chipset, released in May this year. Compared to its stronger brother 7150M graphics, this solution doesn’t offer hardware decoding of MPEG2 1080i / H.264 720p video, and the core speed is 350MHz compared to 425MHz on the 7150M. In 3DMark05 benchmark, the computer scored 612 marks, whereas PCMark5 scored 900 in graphics.
This Acer notebook features 1GB of RAM, or to be more precise 2×512MB of DDR2 running at 533MHz. Out of the box, the graphics are set to use 256MB, so the system is left with about 750MB, and that, is not quite the best solution for Vista.

After recalling their batteries last month, Toshiba, again, issued another recall this time for Satellite A100, A105, and Tecra A7 model batteries. The description of the recalled product is stated by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC); and is particularly familiar: “Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries containing Sony cells used in Toshiba notebook computers.”
Toshiba’s larger recall in late July affected 10,000 batteries was also related to the use of Sony cells in the affected batteries. In both cases, Toshiba is replacing the affected batteries for free and has set up a page with additional information on the battery recall program.
If you own one of the affected laptops you should send in your battery immediately. Proper care and maintenance don’t offer protection against the type of flaws behind the recalls Toshiba and Sony have announced, but the way in which you care for a system battery can have a significant impact on its longevity and ability to maintain a charge.

Sony is trying to eliminate the old spinning platters of our conventional hard-disk drives. Sony, has just equipped their Sony Vaio TZ18GN with a Solid State Drive (SSD) instead of the conventional hard disk drive. The 11.1-inch ultraportable notebook is said to be more faster, lighter and much more power efficient compare to HDD-based notebooks.
The VAIO TZ18GN weighs just 1.15 kilograms and boasts a very formidable battery life of 11.5 hours on a single charge. They say that this is about a half hour more juice than the HDD notebook. The problem however, is disk space. Even though the battery life lasts a bit longer, the laptop only comes with a 32GB SSD, rather than the 100GB HDD you would normally get from other models.
Other features of the VAIO TZ18GN include an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 8x DVD-DL burner (no Blu-ray), Windows Vista, and 1GB of RAM which is heavily recommended for upgrading to 2GB. The price is a little out there at US$4,299, which works out to be a $700 premium over the model with a 100GB HDD.

The G1S is one of Asus‘ first Intel Santa Rosa notebooks. It’s not the screamer machine serious gamers are hoping for, but mainstream users who happen to enjoy gaming will find a lot to like with this system. The Asus G1S looks the part of a gaming notebook, with a mix of matte-black and high-gloss carbon fiber plastic that does a decent job of resisting smudges and fingerprints. A carbon-fiber print covers the touchpad, while brushed aluminum highlights the touchpad buttons and palm-rest area. Lime-green accents behind the built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam offset the darker colors well.
At 13.9 x 11.2 x 1.5 inches and 6.8 pounds, the G1S is small for a gaming machine but still manages to squeeze in a full-sized keyboard and a 15.4-inch screen. The 1680 x 1050-pixel, 15.4-inch LCD is well suited for movie watching, gaming, Web surfing, and general computer work. Graphics via Nvidia’s 8600m GT with 256MB of dedicated memory and Windows Vista Home Premium allows for DirectX 10 gaming.
Intel’s 2.2-GHz Core 2 Duo T7500 with the Next Generation Centrino chipset (Santa Rosa) and 2GB of DDR2 PC2-5300 RAM helped the G1S earn a PCMark05 score of 5,244 and a 3DMark03 score of 6,061. This graphics score is considerably lower than its predecessor’s 10,012 on 3DMark03, which makes us wonder how much Santa Rosa really makes up for Vista’s shortcomings.
