  • Sony VGN-CR60B/P Laptop

    sonytypeC.JPG

Tired of seeing a sea of boring gray and matte black in the world of laptops? Sony is gearing up to literally add some color in those cheeks and a little spice in your life with their all new VAIO Type C line of “fun” computers for “young people.” The suits downtown can be perfectly content rolling around in a ThinkPad, but the iPod generation wants their personality to come shining through, and that’s why these fairly powerful notebooks come in your choice of six different colors: black, silver, and dark grey for the conservative types, as well as baby blue, green, and pink for the more exuberant amongst us.

As far as specs are concerned, the VAIO Type C can hold its own against many of its main competitors. Powering these computers will be your choice of Intel processors: if you want to save a few bucks, you can get the Celeron M430 CPU, but more likely than not, you’ll probably want to step up a Core 2 Duo (T5500, T7200, or T7400). RAM ranges from 512MB to 2GB, whereas the visual side of things comes by way of an NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 graphics card. You can also get a hard drive as large as 120GB.

No word on pricing or availability, but if you’re looking for a sexy laptop (one that may even come with a free bag, I might add), then the Sony VAIO Type C just might be for you.

  • Sony VAIO TZ18GN Released to the Public

    sonyvaio.jpg

The Sony VAIO TZ18GN is an 11.1-inch ultraportable notebook that comes equipped with a SSD, instead of a conventional hard disk drive. Because they’ve gone with solid state memory, this Vaio is said to be faster, lighter, and more power efficient than its HDD-based predecessor.

The VAIO TZ18GN weighs just 1.15 kilograms and boasts a very formidable battery life of 11.5 hours on a single charge. They say that this is about a half hour more juice than the HDD notebook. On the downside, you’ll be sacrificing a fair bit of storage, because this laptop only comes with a 32GB SSD, rather than the 100GB HDD you would normally get.

Other vitals include an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 8x DVD-DL burner (no Blu-ray), Windows Vista, and 1GB of RAM with the (heavily recommended) option of upgrading to 2GB. The price is a little out there at US$4,299, which works out to be a $700 premium over the model with a 100GB HDD.

  • NVous%20PC-paint.jpgNVous PC is a new service made by an ex-Alienware engineer that provides a way for laptops to become more colored and painted with custom designs. It is similar to what Colorware does with Lenovo Thinkpad notebooks, but the special word here is custom designs, which can be resumed to a simple word – unique.

At this time, Nvous only has two laptops on their “portfolio”: Mercury, and Ether. The first one has a 14.1-inch screen and a 2.33Ghz Core 2 Duo mobile processor. The memory RAM consists of 2GB, while the hard-drive has 160GB of space. Additional features include a DVD super drive, Wi-Fi, and Windows Vista as the OS.

As for the second laptop, Ether, the main difference is on the screen display which is bigger – 15.4-inches – and instead of a DVD super drive it only has a DVD combo drive. Prices are $1,100 and $1,000 correspondingly.

  • dell-inspiron-color%201.jpg
Remember some of the Dell Inspiron notebooks mentioned previously on July? In case you don’t remember, they are available in 8 different colors, including Jet Black, Alpine White, Espresso Brown, Ruby Red, Midnight Blue, Spring Green, Flaming Pink and Sunshine Yellow.

The problem is that some Inspiron notebook orders are being delayed for 1 month, and sometimes even 2 months. You might be asking what is the cause, and according to Dell, the blame is to be put on the colors.

To date, color options are the main source of delay on Inspiron notebooks. Basic colors like black are easier to produce. Premium colors and finishes like we use on the Inspiron models introduce complexity into the process, and that’s holding things up.

On top of the colors, there is another cause for the delays, which are the screen displays - some of them are short in supply.

    Acer 5520 Laptop

    acer5520.jpg

The Acer Aspire 5520 is a surprising piece of equipment. The quality and the robustness of the case are much better than what anyone would come to expect that comes out of Acer. The design is good too, matte black, curved angles and couple of sharp lines, all this breathes some elegance into this laptop. The case dimensions are 426×366x274 mm, and weight is 2.75kg.

The 5520 is equipped with a dual core AMD Athlon 64 X2 mobile TK-53 processor running at 1.7 GHz with 2×256 kb of cache. Integrated Nvidia GeForce 7000M card is a part of the relatively new nForce 610M chipset, released in May this year. Compared to its stronger brother 7150M graphics, this solution doesn’t offer hardware decoding of MPEG2 1080i / H.264 720p video, and the core speed is 350MHz compared to 425MHz on the 7150M. In 3DMark05 benchmark, the computer scored 612 marks, whereas PCMark5 scored 900 in graphics.

This Acer notebook features 1GB of RAM, or to be more precise 2×512MB of DDR2 running at 533MHz. Out of the box, the graphics are set to use 256MB, so the system is left with about 750MB, and that, is not quite the best solution for Vista.
