Motorola Droid Official Pictures

We have talked about the Motorola Droid in the past weeks and now we have a few official pictures of the device for you. And from what we hear, the phone is one of the best Android handsets to walk the earth. At least until know. Motorola seems to have developed a winner phone and Verizon Wireless customers will be able to enjoy it soon.

Let’s take a look at some specs before we jump to more photos:

  • Fast TI OMAP 3430 processor
  • Android 2.0
  • Full QWERTY Keyboard
  • Touchscreen capacitive display
  • Slightly thicker than an iPhone 3GS
  • Desktop cradle/charger

Doesn’t the Droid sound exciting? It might just become the Motorola phone to beat in the near future. The handset will probably be the fastest and thinnest Android slider phone out there when Verizon decides to launch it. HTC should definitely start working on an Android phone capable of similar features.

  • Everyone that happens to own an iPhone, Android or webOS smartphone in the USA will be happy to notice that Google has decided to improve mobile search capabilities for these platforms. Users will be available to take advantage of search features similar to those found on the regular Google search engine version found on your PC. These new search options will definitely improve the quality of your results as you’ll be able to add various filters to your future searches. By using specific filters like “forums” or “time of day” you’ll be able to find the most relevant and most recent articles, news and even user opinion related to the topics, products or events that you happen to Google for while you’re on the move. Unfortunately, in case you own a Symbian of Windows Mobile smartphone you should consider either switching platforms or wait for Google to remember you exist too. The upgraded mobile search engine is available for now just for iPhone OS, Android and webOS handsets.

  • Remember how AT&T complained to the FCC about Google’s Google Voice application? Apparently the FCC took things very seriously. The Commission is now investigating Google. It looks that the feature of Google Voice that lets the app block certain call poses a serious issue. Google Voice does block calls to rural services, conference call services and chat lines in order to help the user save some money. But that’s not exactly the best of intentions is it?

FCC has sent a letter to Google asking it about the way calls get routed with Google Voice and how the whole numbers blocking works. We’ll be curious to see what the FCC has to say about Google Voice. Google on the other hand will defend itself by saying it’s only offering a software solution which can’t be subject to carrier laws. In other words, it will be some time until we see Google Voice on any iPhones!

There’s one more company interested in making Android phones, Japan’s Kyocera. The company plans to launch its first smartphone capable of running Google’s OS at some point in next year. And we definitely hope we’re going to see more than one Kyocera phone in 2010. Besides Android plans, Kyocera is also thinking about LTE. Its first dual CDMA/LTE phone is scheduled to arrive in 2011 but we don’t know what platform it will use. Can we assume it’s going to be an LTE Android phone?

In case you don’t know, Verizon and Google reached an important agreement today. Ignoring Microsoft’s special day, the two giants said that they will work together to bring the Android experience to Verizon subscribers soon.

The first two phones coming to Verizon stores are the Motorola Droid, rumored to be available on October 30 and HTC’s Hero which will hit the streets sometime in November. We don’t have the precise details yet but everything is confirmed. Check out Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt and Verizon’s CEO Lowell McAdam holding Verizon branded Android phones in the picture above. What more of a confirmation do we need?

    LG GW620 Android Phone Spotted

We’ve been waiting for a few months now to see LG’s Android phone, the GW620, become official. Although no North American carrier will launch the GW620 is supposed to officially debut in Europe by the end of the year. And it looks like it has already been spotted on French territory and captured on video. The phone will offer you a 3-inch resistive touchscreen display, a full QWERTY keyboard, a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and a 3.5mm headphone jack. And if Motorola has MOTOBLUR on top of Android, LG made sure its proprietary S-Class UI will work well under Android conditions too. We don’t have pricing details just yet but at least we can see the LG GW620 in action.

  • You might have heard of a little thing called Chrome OS which is going to be Google’s own operating system for future nebtooks. Unfortunately the new OS is not available yet and we’ll have to wait until mid-2010 to see it in action. That will not stop Acer from unveiling a Google-power netbook before the year’s end. The dual-boot machine should be available just in time for Christmas. That means you’ll be able to send greeting cards either from an Android or Windows XP interface but we’ll totally understand if you decide to ignore that old XP for a while. We don’t have pricing details and exact arrival dates at this time but it’s just the beginning of October. There’s plenty of time for Acer to announce Aspire One’s brother.

  • On the first of this month we let you know that Motorola was working on an Android powered phone for Verizon reportedly called the Droid. This is supposedly the same device that has been floating around that people have been calling the Motorola Sholes.

Whatever its name is, we already know that it will most likely feature a 600MHz processor along with a 3.7-inch touchscreen, 5MP camera all powered by Google’s Android 2.0 operating system.

Today further rumors have appeared that tell us the device might also feature a 430MHz C64x + DSP + ISP in addition to a PowerVR SGX 530GPU. Hardware wise we’re also looking at a 3.5mm jack, 16GB of internal storage and a microSD slot for expansion.

December 1st is the release date these rumors are pointing at but until we hear official word from Motorola or Verizon, we’re keeping our mouths shut.

Snagging a live picture of the device is fine, but the delay comes as a blow to some of us who were just warming up to the device.  Apparently, the Android-powered ONE smartphone will not be released by the end of this year but in January of next year, a month’s delay at the most.  Xataka was able to get some hands-on time with an earlier version of the GeeksPhone device and found a size/weight similar to the Dream or myTouch3G and a comfy keyboard, which makes us favor the device a tad more.  Let’s hope we don’t lose track of this ONE amidst the Android devices that seem to pop up every other day now!

  • The Android bug may have caught all the major manufacturers, but newcomers like GeeksPhone aren’t shy either. The Spanish startup had revealed the news already back in June and we have an update on its release date and a definitive price. The ONE Android smartphone will be available in Western Europe starting the end of this year going for about $375, which seems to be a pretty good price looking at the ONE’s specs. It will apparently boast of a Qualcomm MSM7225 528MHz processor aided by 256MB RAM and 256MB ROM to keep Android humming, a full QWERTY keypad, GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz), 3G, and 2100MHz HSPA network support, a 3.2-inch WQVGA resistive touchscreen display, GPS, microSD expansion, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a 3.1 megapixel camera, all snuck into a glossy horizontal slider form factor. We think $375 is a great price for a device with such a good spec sheet, but what do you think? Feel free to sound out in the Comments section!

  • For the moment CLIQ is the hot Android phone coming from Motorola via T-Mobile. But fear not Moto fans, CLIQ has a worthy follower or so we suspect. The Tao or Sholes or however they decide to call it at launch, has been spotted in the wild running Android. What other OS would it run? As you can see the phone was running Google Maps at the time the picture was taken and you can also see it’s going to offer us a pretty impressive 1390mAh battery. We have no more details at this point in time but in Verizon we trust to launch the phone already!

Fortunately for Android fans there’s another phone coming your way from HTC that’s going to run Google’s OS. The Desire is the phone in question and it looks like the handset have been blessed by the FCC. The phone might be heading to Verizon soon and it could become the first Android phone to be sold by Big Red. Besides being approved by the FCC, the phone has also received WiFi certification from the WiFi Alliance. And that’s all the news there is to it. Hopefully the Desire will be at least as hot as the Hero and we envision it coming with Donut on and HTC Sense UI on top. What do you think?

  • The last we heard, the Acer A1 was set for a release this month and while don’t see the device on the shelves yet, it is at least available for preorder now from Expansys Germany, a good sign.  The device, as we already knew, comes with Android but specs sheet up on the retailer’s site reveals that the A1 will come with Android 2.0 (Donut) preloaded and a 768MHz processor, which is no Snapdragon but faster than the rest of the Android smartphones out as of now.  Expansys has it priced at $571, but that should change when it is picked up a carrier in the near future.

Talk about an unforeseen turn of events! It looks like none other than AT&T is asking the FCC to investigate Google Voice. AT&T has been rumored to be the muscle behind Apple’s decision to keep Google Voice out of the App Store and now the carrier is fighting back. AT&T claims that Google Voice is responsible for blocking calls which is contrary to federal call-blocking regulations. All calls have to be permitted, no matter who you’d want to call. Google Voice is responsible for blocking calls to “adult-chat lines and conference call services, which charge expensive access fees.” We can deal with blocked conference calls but no adult-chat connections? FCC certainly has to look into that. After all anyone should be able to call adult-chat lines whenever they please!

I wonder how many adult-chat lines / conference call services AT&T has tried before finding this anomaly in Google’s Google Voice service. So let’s see what the FCC will have to say about all this. After all the same commission punished AT&T when they were doing some call blocking of their own a couple of years ago so Google might have some explaining to do. Will be back with more details about the AT&T-Google-Apple “love” triangle in the following weeks as this soap opera is getting more and more interesting to follow.
