Google is yet to take the wraps off Android, but it seems to be having much better luck with its other applications. The search engine giant has released a new Google Maps version for cell phones, which now comes loaded with its oft-used Street View feature as well. Users in the United States can now access 360-degree snaps of streets and places they want to be at, making businesses and locations easier to locate when they are lost and need some pictorial guidance. The new Google Maps application has also business reviews and can provide walking directions to the location if you feel it deserves your attention. Get yours by heading over to Google Maps from your BlackBerry or any Java-enabled cell phone.

  • According to Reuters, T-Mobile will be ready to launch it’s Android G1 phone on September 23rd. Well actually that might not happen since Reuters’ unnamed sources mentioned something about a joint T-Mobile and Google announcement in New York City.

If it’s not the G1 what else could it be? What else does T-Mobile and Google have in common? With no official comments from either T-Mobile or Google, we’ll just have to wait and see.

    Android Market Coming Soon?

Google is going to give Apple a run for its money. Like Apple’s App Store for the iPhone 3G and the iPhone touch, Google is going to have an Android Market which will be very similar. Future owners of Android devices will be able to purchase, download and install various applications from the Android Market.

T-Mobile is going to bring us the HTC Dream, the first Android cell phone but more are going to follow in 2009. That means the Android Market is going to have a guaranteed success and it might surpass in downloads the Apple App Store.

We don’t know any official dates for now but since the announcement has already been made we should assume things are going to be up and running soon.

    HTC Dream Pictures and Prices

HTC’s first Android device, the Dream has been widely discussed these last couple of weeks. While we’re still waiting to see if a September release will be possible, we got more pictures and details of the upcoming device.

What do you think about the image above? Does it look real enough to you? Is it extremely photoshopped? We sure need more details than that.

But there are rumored pricing options for the HTC Dream. A new customer choosing a 2 year contract will get the phone for $199.99. A new customer choosing a 1 year contract will pay $249.99. A full upgrade with a 2 year contract will cost $217.99 while a 1 year contract will cost $267.99. A partial upgrade will get you the handset for $367.99.

If you pre-order a full upgrade with a 2 year contract you will pay $167.99 while a pre-order with only 1 year will cost you $217.99. A pre-order with a partial upgrade gets you the phone for $317.99. If you want to pay the full $399 you will get the phone without a contract.

    But these are just rumors

  • Google Releases Android 0.9 SDK

On Monday, Google updated the Android SDK to version 0.9, nearing ever closer to the final 1.0 version.  Android 0.9 includes several changes:

    Removal of the Bluetooth API
    Removal of the GTalkService protocol
    New Home Screen
Alarm Clock, Calculator, Camera, Music player, Picture viewer, and messaging

Keep in mind, this still isn’t the final version of the SDK so when phones running Android finally come out, code produced using the 0.9 SDK might not be recognized by the 1.0 OS.

However, Android developer Dan Morril posted on his blog that the platform is now pretty stable and no major changes are expected when 1.0 comes out.

Developers interested in the Android platform can download the new SDK here.

Finally, and might I say unexpectedly, the day when a T-Mobile’s official would confirm its first Android device has arrived.

Not exactly a gPhone, but certainly an iPhone competitor, T-Mobile’s Android handset has been discussed all over the internet lately. But now we have something real, an official statement and not just rumors. (more…)

  • Here’s the kind of news I foresaw a few days ago while watching the rumored HTC’s Android powered Dream video. Only that I wasn’t expecting it to arrive so soon. It appears that T-Mobile will start presales for the Dream on September 17th and open sales on September 24th. Named conveniently the G1, I guess Google1 was to long, the Dream will be priced $150 or $399. (more…)

    Rumored: Google to Acquire Sprint

The Guys over at Sprint have some financial problems to say the least. We’ve seen them sell a large number of their towers a few weeks ago and we’ve heard rumors about Sprint selling Nextel.

It appears now that Google is interested in a Sprint acquisition. The rumor has been around the block last year too but it appears that now Google has a special interest in Sprint’s WiMAX network now which they would surely use to launch the first Android devices.

For now we don’t have any Android devices and no official news around the matter. Are we to see Google’s XOHM soon?

This year is a rather poor year for Android. Fans, developers, manufacturers and carriers have been waiting for Android devices to be ready this year but due to various problems that hasn’t happened yet. Most smartphone makers have postponed any Android devices to 2009 except for HTC and maybe T-Mobile.

  • Word around the street is that Google’s Android and Nokia’s Symbian are going to merge. Merge into what may I ask? Why would Nokia, kings of the cell phones business so far, operating handsets on their own Symbian OS which is going open by the way, want to mingle with Google’s Android, an OS we have talked much about without actually getting nothing good in return. There are millions of Symbian devices working out there while there’s a maybe Android phone or device for later this year.

People are talking about a gPhone again. Like we don’t know this isn’t a phone we’re going to see this year. We’re less likely to see an Android powered smartphone this year at all, but that might still happen. As for the gPhone thing…

Today Larry Page and Sergei Brin, the founders of Google together with CEO Eric Schmidt made various statements suggesting a future gPhone.

Hollywood Reporter writer Dan Cox said regarding their statements:

The trio of Google execs also used the opportunity to talk about the inroads the company is making with its own branded mobile phone as a replacement for the iPhone.

That’s not enough at all to make us think that the gPhone is actually going to be launched soon. But if we add to these statements the rumor that San Francisco based Ammunition Design Group is designing the gPhone we might have something here.

Ammunition Design Group has worked on various devices like Palm, Hewlett-Packard, Dell Computer, Logitech and Sprint (the handset in the picture) so they know what they are doing. And in case it matters, the founder, Robert Brunner, was previously the director of Industrial Design at Apple Computer until 1997.

So are we going to be in for a surprise? An iPhone like gPhone? That should be some competition, with Google controlling the internet and the news flow. I wonder who would eventually win.
