The Palm Pre arrival date hasn’t been announced yet officially but Roger McNamee is making bold statements. That hairy founding partner of Elevation Partners, that investment firm working on Palm’s rescue plan surprised everyone when he went on to say that the Pre will steam former iPhone buyers:
June 29, 2009, is the two-year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone. Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later. Think about it — if you bought the first iPhone, you bought it because you wanted the coolest product on the market. Your two-year contract has just expired. Look around. Tell me what they’re going to buy.
We’ll be interested to see how many iPhone users will switch to Pre this summer. Will AT&T send Verizon-like surveys to its iPhone customers that will go to Sprint?

For all those disappointed souls hoping for a Verizon Touch Diamond, don’t lose hope just yet. BGR has a couple of photos to prove that there is indeed is a Touch Diamond waiting to hop on Verizon’s back, but with a few changes that would go unnoticed if you aren’t really looking for them. Most of the specs remain the same as the other Diamond versions including the Sprint’s Touch Diamond, aside from taking a cut on the ROM/RAM side to 256/128MB.
There is still no word on a release date but with the Touch Diamond2 on its way in a few months, it remains to be seen if Verizon will actually go ahead and release the older version.

Are you an AT&T subscriber? We have news for you! It looks like the future cell phone lineup of AT&T has leaked over to the press. Here are the some of the phones we should expect: the LG Zenon is arriving mid-April, the Nokia E71x at the beginning of April and the “Jackfrost”, whatever it is, is coming at the end of the month.
Verizon will launch the Nokia 7205 Intrigue in a few days, while Sprint is getting the Palm Treo Pro on March 15. We’re just going to need some prices to match the phones in the list above. Which one would you buy? And what’s that Jackfrost after all?

Verizon seems really concerned with how many of its otherwise loyal customers have switched to AT&T because of that nasty Apple iPhone. A logical conclusion would be that Verizon Wireless has lost quite a number of subscribers despite purchasing Alltel last year.
Check out the screenshot above and you’ll understand what we mean. Another logical conclusion would be that Verizon will get the iPhone soon to please its customers. What does AT&T have to say about all this? Has AT&T lost any customers for the BlackBerry Storm for example?

Despite the fact that Verizon and AT&T are testing their own LTE networks, they won’t be the first ones to launch one. It seems that MetroPCS, a regional prepaid mobile operator plans to deploy LTE in the second half of 2010. The carrier has about 5.4 million subscribers in 14 markets which means it will deploy its network faster than Verizon or AT&T. Surprisingly MetroPCS doesn’t have any smartphones which could benefit from that LTE technology. According to Tom Keys, MetroPCS’ chief operating officer, a Canadian smartphone is heading to MetroPCS next year.

The LG Versa handset will be available in Verizon Wireless stores starting today. The phone will cost $199 with a two-year contract or $269 with a one-year contract. A $50 online rebate applies to both versions. If you’d like to get the phone at full price you’ll have to pay the full price of $449. Maybe just a little bit too expensive for the Versa’s capabilities. What do you think? Ready to choose a Versa phone?

The Niagara is the future BlackBerry 9630 which should arrive from Verizon Wireless in the future. It will have support for CDMA 1x, EV-DO Rev. A, GSM, GPRS, EDGE and UMTS. Unfortunately there’s no WiFi support in this Niagara. The phone might arrive in May or June but we definitely need confirmation. And we could use some pricing details too. Considering that the Pre and possibly the third-generation iPhone are also coming out around the same period, which one would you choose?

The LG LX9600 Versa is getting closer and closer. It’s expected to officially arrive on March 1 but it looks like Verizon has started to pack the units and send them to stores. At least one of them got derailed and that’s how we, the Internet, ended up showing off the picture of the Versa in official Verizon Wireless packaging. Will we see the Versa in stores earlier than actually expected? Let us know if you do buy one earlier than supposed to!

Verizon plans to add another RIM phone to its BlackBerry collection. This time we’re talking about the BlackBerry Niagara which is supposed to be smaller than the Bold but larger than the Curve 8900. The Niagara will offer 3G connectivity via EV-DO rev A, a 480 x 360 resolution display, A-GPS, a 3.2 megapixels camera, a full QWERTY keyboard and RIM’s software: BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 and BlackBerry OS 4.6. It’s not only Verizon, Vodafone, AT&T and T-Mobile that are interested or already working on their future 4G networks. Over in Canada we have Rogers who plans to launch its own LTE network next year. During their last conference call Rogers had quite a few things to say about this LTE network:
- Rogers’ LTE network is currently ahead of its development schedule
- Recent tests have yielded 50 Mbps download speeds without any sort of optimization (woo!)
- Speeds at launch are expected to reach 70 Mbps
- The initial launch of the Rogers LTE network will take place in Vancouver and the surrounding area, in time for the 2010 Olympics (February 2010)
- The service will launch with a USB stick - Rogers is still talking to vendors - but it has no plans to have any 4G-enabled handsets available at that time
- The Rogers 4G network will expand outside of the Vancouver area during Q2 2010
- Rogers will have 4G phones available by the end of Q2 2010 as it extends its 4G network
- Rogers noted that its 3G launch was a mess but it is taking measures to ensure that 4G goes much smoother
Rogers will have LTE ready by Q3 2010. By then it also hopes to move its cable Internet network to LTE in order to free space for HD content on its cable business. Looking forward to see whose LTE network will be the first one to roll out officially.

Verizon Wireless has decided to lower the price for the Samsung Omnia. Is this move a response to the economic crisis or is Verizon getting ready to offer some hot phones to its subscribers?
The Omnia will cost you just $99 if you buy it online. There’s a $70 discount available only online so far. You’ll have to choose a 2-year contract to get that special prices. If you’re more of a 1-year contract person then the Omnia will cost you $169. There’s also the possibility of purchasing the phone without a contract, at $559.

With the MWC starting off in Barcelona, the LG VX9600 or the Versa, must be the last thing on your mind right now. However, some of you might be interested in the phone so we have to tell you it’s not coming yet. You’ll have to find it in yourselves to wait another two weeks to get the Versa, but I am sure you will manage. Verizon hasn’t announced the prices yet, but we will keep you appraised.

Verizon’s Long Term Evolution network might still be in the works for a launch this year. Richard Lynch, executive VP and CTO said that the company is in the final stages of selecting partners which will be unveiled in Barcelona at the MWC. Once the LTE service will be launched it will work together with the current 3G network and Vodafone might probably use the same LTE technology. Should we expect LTE to arrive by the end of 2009?
