Another Sony computer: VAIO L

On top of the laptop that Sony announced today, there is another cool device named VAIO L that belongs in the category of “touchscreen PCs”. This cool computer is available in different models, with the cheapest being a 2.7GHz Pentium dual-core processor with 4GB of RAM, and a hard-drive of 320GB, plus a DVD writer and a GeForce G210M as the graphics card - this low-end model costs approximately $1,300-

The other top-notch models come with a 2.66GHz Core 2 Quad processor, and 6GB of RAM, plus 1TB on the hard-drive, and instead of a DVD writer it has a Blu-ray drive, and a better graphics card which is the GeForce GT 240M. You can already pre-order a Sony VAIO L, but the shipping will only start on November.

  • Sony is really riding the wave on its brand new PS3 Slim. The game console is selling like hot cakes all over the place so it’s no wonder that a 250GB PS3 Slim model has also been developed. The bigger model has apparently arrived in stores and retailers are waiting to sell it to the angry mobs gathering in front of their stores. Ok, maybe there’s nobody lining up to get this model yet as the 250GB PS3 Slim should officially be available starting with October 6. But then again, there’s at least one store that’s selling those boxes in the picture here.

On a different note it looks like October 6 is a day when everyone wants to get noticed. It is definitely not going to be a day dedicated to Microsoft related events like the big Windows Mobile 6.5 launch after all as both Sony and Motorola have apparently big plans scheduled on the very same date. So what will you do on October 6? Follow Microsoft’s launch, grab a 250GB PS3 from Sony or attend Motorola’s MOTODEV event?

A new connector is coming to your future cell phones and mobile devices and its solely purpose is to connect said device to HDTVs and display. The Mobile High-Definition Interface Working Group will conceive it soon as various companies have already agreed upon such a bold endeavor. Nokia, Samsung, Toshiba, Sony and Silicon Image will work together to create the new standard. The question is, do we really need a new standard in our lives? After all we already have so many and with Apple’s and Intel’s Light Peak universal connector that’s coming in a couple of years there isn’t much point for devising an HD-only standard. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Just like we said earlier on today, Sony was indeed getting ready to launch the new Reader Daily Edition. So let’s see what this reader is all about! You can expect a 7-inch touchscreen and AT&T 3G modem to help you with your reading. The Reader Daily Edition will be available in December for just $400 but 3G access will be free. Sony has partnered up with the New York Public Library for the launch of the Reader but you’ll get plenty of content from a lot of other sources too. So what do you say? Are you more inclined to pick up a Reader Daily Edition than a Kindle?

  • Just a quick update here — Sony has recently announced that they will be upping the capacity of their Memory Stick Pro Duo memory cards to a full 32GB.

While this product is marketed generally towards those looking to store large amounts of HD footage, I don’t see why you couldn’t slap a few documents (or whatever else you need) on there for easy storage.

We have been waiting for the OPhone from Lenovo for a while now and it seems the handset is now ready to hit the stores. The O1 Android phone will be available in China and China Mobile is the designated carrier. We’ll be waiting for more details about this hot 3G phone and we’re looking forward to see it arrive in other markets. From the screenshot here the O1 looks like a worthy iPhone adversary but the jury is still out on this one.

At this point we’re not sure how much merit you should put into this rumor, but take it as you will. A Danish mobile phone site, Mobil, has recently gotten their hands on what they are calling internal documents showcasing an Android powered Sony Ericcson XPERIA reportedly codenamed Rachael.

According to the documents, this phone will feature a full 1GHZ Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 8MP camera, HSPA and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Other than that, no details were spoken of. However, if this handset is truly set to hit the market sometime we can expect a statement from Sony in the coming weeks/months.

There’s good news for everyone charging their phones in Europe. It looks like there’s a phone charging standard coming to all those European handset owners. The European Commission has received today confirmation for that micro-USB charging socket from the most important names in the mobile business. Nokia, Sony, Ericsson, Motorola, Apple, LG, NEC, Qualcomm, RIM, Samsung and Texas Instruments are all going to play ball and we should expect them to launch devices ready to be charged via a micro-USB charger sometime next year. On the long run the micro-UBS standard could be adopted by other markets too since CTIA, OMTP and the GSM Association also support it. Can’t wait for the day when I won’t hate myself for forgetting a certain phone charger! What are your thoughts on this?

    Sony PSP-Phone in the Works?

Most mobile phones have taken a different route. Ideally, phones would integrate games with the standard mobile device we use today. But as far as Sony is concerned, it is the other way around. For their Sony PSP, a gadget that is familiar to us as a gaming device, rumors are flying around that it will be made as a mobile phone as well. Wise decision?

Some may like it while others may not. But it does make you wonder, bulky as the PSP may be, how would it fare compared to the slimmer and portable types such as the iPhone? Are we going to see a new PSP design soon?

If Sony is dead serious on this niche, well, one thing we can look forward to is the design outcome. We may soon see a slimmer and lighter PSP it all pushes through. But now, the next challenge awaits and a big question comes into mind; Is it worth turning a successful gadget into another niche where is may find itself crawling back to the top?

It looks like Sony has finally gone ahead and updated their netbook mini laptop offering, the Vaio P, to put it almost on par with, you know, those little computers that cost less than half as much.

It seems that sony has added a 1.6GHz Atom processor (as found in most sub-$500 netbooks) along with an optional 128GB SSD, GPS reciever and/or Verizon WWAN support. As Engadget points out this updated version still lacks factory XP support along with the newer 1.86GHz Atom processor.

In conclusion, Sony’s Vaio P looks cool (because it’s small) but still doesn’t live up to its $1,499.99 price tag.

Sony has recently come forth and announced their latest VAIO offering, the NW — This notebook will feature a 15.5-inch WXGA display with XBRITE, a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of DDR2 RAM an ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570 video card with 512MB of ram. Additionally it will have support for 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, a 400GB harddrive, and battery options of 1.5 hours all the way up to 5.5 hours.

The real selling point of this machine, however, is it’s 4x BD-ROM drive which coupled with it’s VGA and HDMI outputs make it a great entertainment option. Lastly, the VAIO NW features support slots for Memory Stick Pro, ExpressCard and SD cards.

The VAIO NW will ship sometime next month starting at $880 with the BD-ROM drive and $800 without.

  • Ericsson Isn’t Going Anywhere

Not long ago we told you how people say Ericsson is interested in leaving Sony for good and Sony is trying to come up with the funds required to buyout its partner. It looks like that was all a rumor as s Ericsson isn’t going anywhere. A new report from Dow Jones is confirming that Ericsson “has no plans to abandon its joint venture Sony Ericsson.” I guess we don’t need more confirmation than that. Although Sony might indeed be thinking differently about the whole issue.

  • Sony Vaio VGN-SR390 Laptop

When you talk about laptops, the Sony Vaio is certain to be among the tops brands one would think of.

The Sony VAIO SR390 can be one of the least expensive of the company’s ultraportable laptops but it also lacks the performance that can be found for less from other companies or with more features for the same cost.

It comes with a LED backlit display that provides some excellent color without producing too much glare from the glossy coating. The keyboard design is also very comfortable and easy to use.

The big problem with the VAIO SR390 is its cost. While it is relatively affordable for a Sony laptop, there are offerings from other brands that offer a similar level of features that cost less or provide even more features and performance for the same price. This makes the Sony really only a strong choice for those looking for a system with a very strong display or just have to own a Sony laptop.

  • Last year we’ve heard various rumors saying that Sony and Ericsson will part ways. That hasn’t happened yet but it looks like something will definitely going to change. Ericsson wants out of the cell phone business and Sony if fine with it. In fact Sony will buy Ericsson’s share and continue on its own. So how do you like this new rumor? No official statements have been made yet so we’re still looking for confirmation for this one.

  • We all know about the Sony Ericsson W595 mid-range Walkman phone. But while that is normally available in the default design model colors, here is something that can somehow sway it to the favor of women.

Sony Ericsson has further expanded their Walkman range of mobile phones with the release of the latest color variant of their new slide model, the Sony Ericsson W595 Pink which joins the existing blue, white, grey and black editions of this sliding Walkman phone line up.

The Sony Ericsson W595 pink offers exactly the specs, technology and music features as the rest of the color variants in the range but exchanges the outer casing color for a new sassy, sexy light pink finish.

With the Pink Sony W595 users get the best in music on the move with its built-in Walkman MP3 player, and they can download their favorite music straight to their phone with T-Mobile’s Mobile Jukebox. Owners of the Sony W595 Pink can surf the internet on the move with web n’ walk or use the phone as a modem for their laptop to go online.
