We’ve already seen the Xperia X2 twice so far and we have an idea of what features to expect from it when it arrives. Today we get to see it in Silver and it certainly looks better. And a lot thinner I might add although at this point we’re still guessing. If the phone has been already leaked to everyone why isn’t Sony Ericsson do the honorable thing and announces it? Will any carrier be ready to pick this Windows Mobile 6.5 carrier up?

Sony Ericsson C901a GreenHeart

Sony Ericsson C901 GreenHeart

Sony Ericsson C901 GreenHeart

The Sony Ericsson C901a GreenHeart is an eco-friendly phone formed from a minimum of 50% recycled plastics as well as an optimized display light sensor that uses less energy. The ocean white handset is colored with waterborne paint with low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). The included MH300 GreenHeart headset is constructed of 100% recycled plastics. Some of the other green features include an electronic in-phone manual instead of a paper booklet, smaller packaging that lessens transport related CO2 emissions by over 80 percent while the charger is low-power usage. The WalkMate application lets users count the steps they take compared with the same journey traveled by car.

The integrated 5.0-megapixel digital camera with Xenon flash takes sharp high-resolution photos and includes face detection, while smile shutter takes the photo when they smile. BestPic gives the user nine chances to capture the precise moment by taking four additional images as the button is pressed, and another four afterwards while the photo fix improves pictures by adjusting contrast, light and brightness for the best possible picture. The Sony Ericsson C901 Green Heart is able to support GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 UMTS/HSPA 900/2100. It has phone memory of up to 120MB and talk time for GSM / GPRS is up to 9 and half hours while stand by time for GSM / GPRS is up to 430 hours. This is a great example of sustainable design.

    • 8.1 megapixel camera with auto focus,
    • VGA video recording at 30fps
    • 3.5 inch WVGA OLED touchscreen display
    • GPS, aGPS
    • 3.5 mm headphone jack

The X2 seems a lot better than the X1, at least from where we’re looking. That Windows Mobile 6.5 OS we were talking about yesterday is there and it looks like the X2 will be upgradeable to Windows Mobile 7. We’ll be looking forward for Sony Ericsson to officially mention the X2.

We have just told you about the next Xperia smartphone from Sony Ericsson and it looks like more pictures of the X2 have been leaked. The Xperia X2 seems more and more certain and it even has a codename, the Vulcan. This Xperia will be black and it will run on Windows Mobile like its predecessor. According to the pictures it will also sport an 8 megapixel camera with flash. We’ll be waiting for the official Sony Ericsson announcement for more specs, but it might take a while since the phone could be launched only in 2011.

    Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 Revealed?

The Xperia X1 was definitely one important phone for Sony Ericsson and it should be only logical for the manufacturer to work on a follower. Is this the one? Is this the X2? From what we can see in the picture it’s definitely a Sony Ericsson phone. It has an X Panel button and a Windows key so it definitely qualifies as the next Xperia. The handset offers a full QWERTY slide-out keyboard which is also consistent with what we’d expect from the next Xperia. Anyone interested in a potential X2?

Sony Ericsson seems good and ready to launch its first application store. Since everyone else is having a store of their own, why should Sony Ericsson be any different? But the company has taken a totally different approach on this one. Instead of creating a dedicated app store it decided to add the apps to the PlayNow arena. The service is used so far for music distribution and starting this month for movie rentals too. Is Sony Ericsson copying Apple’s iTunes?

The future apps will be available in 13 countries and it will run on about 38 Sony Ericsson phones when the app store is ready to be launched. The first apps you can expect will be Java- or Symbian-based but who knows what Sony Ericsson is preparing for later this year when at least an Android phone is expected. Developers will be able to submit their apps starting with July 1 and the store will therefore be launched at a later date.

Sony Ericsson has at least one more trick up its sleeve before going under. The company is getting ready to launch its mobile movie content business this June. It’s not an app store but it’s still a similar service. The new movie downloads section will be part of the existing PlayNow Arena service. Using the new service you will be able to download videos to your PC at first and then you’ll be able to bring them to life on your smartphone. The movies will be available to play for 90 days after being purchased so you will have plenty of time to enjoy them.

Unfortunately the whole selection process might not really suit your needs. You will be able to choose from 15 movies at any time and up to 60 movies per year with certain phones. The service will be available at first on the W995 and customers in Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK will get it this June. No news about prices yet but we’ll be waiting for the official launch to tell you more.

Despite going to some rough times, Sony Ericsson can still afford to launch new phones like the Yari and Aino. The Yari is a slider ready for gestured-controlled gaming. It comes with a 2.4-inch display, GPS and support for those PlayNow services. The Aino comes with a 3-inch touchscreen and it offers a numeric slide-out keypad, a 8.1 megapixel camera, Sony Remote Play support, GPS and HSPA connectivity.

The Yari will be available in the last quarter of the year and it will cost you about $558. The Aino will also be available in the last quarter but we don’t have any pricing details so far. What will you choose between the Yari and the Aino?

  • Google is expecting anywhere from 18-20 Android phones this year from 8 or 9 different manufacturers. That means our Android universe will just get better. Andy Rubin said all that during the Google I/O conference but the number could be even bigger since some manufacturers might not have revealed their Android plans yet. So far we know that HTC, Motorola, Samsung, Acer, Dell, Sony Ericsson, Huawei, Kogan Agora and Asus have all announced one way or another that they are going to make at least one Android phone. Given these future choices, what will you buy? Android, Apple or Palm?

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 fans in Canada will be more than happy to find out that Rogers is going to start selling the Xperia X1a starting with June 9. Considering that the Xperia is so last year, you might consider getting one of the fancy phones which are about to be available. And just in case you’re hooked on the Xperia then you should know Rogers is going to soft-launch the device. That means only selected Rogers stores will have it on June 9. Full retail launch will roll on June 30 in case you won’t get your hands on a new Xperia early next month. As for the price for the X1a, you will have to fork out $249.99 with a regular 3-year Rogers contract or be prepared to pay anywhere between $649 to $749 to get the handset free of contract.

The picture above shows a leaked Sony Ericsson. We don’t have all the details just yet but the handset above, codenamed the Kokura, is said to be the CDMA version of that famous 12-megapixel Idou handset. Will Verizon launch the Kokura? Is Sprint going to get it? Will you get the Kokura or the Idou soon? So many questions and so little time. We’ll be waiting for some sort of confirmation from the parties involved.

Okay so maybe the following handsets are not the all the phones Rogers Wireless will launch this summer but they will surely be among the most popular: the LG Rumor 2, Sony Ericsson C905 and Xperia X1, HTC Dream and Magic and the new iPhone. Here they are:

    • LG Rumor 2 (Solo Mobile) — ETA: May 25th, outright: $160.00, 2-year contract: $75.00
    • Sony Ericsson C905 — ETA: May 19th (delayed), outright: $449.99, 3-year contract: $249.99 ($299.99 without Rogers Vision)
    • HTC Dream — ETA: June 2nd (limited quantity, availability will increase by June 12th), outright: $649.99, 3-year contract: $199.99
    • HTC Magic — ETA: June 2nd, outright: $649.99, 3-year contract: $199.99
    • Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 — ETA: June 30th (barring additional delays), outright: TBD ($649 - $749), 3-year: $299.99 (will launch at $249.99)
    • iPhone — ETA: unknown (July/August), outright: not allowed, 3-year: TBD

Unfortunately there’s no clear indication as when will the new iPhone arrive. Rogers will probably launch it around the same time the AT&T will for a similar price. What phone would you choose?

If white does for you what black does for me, Sony Ericsson has something to show you.  The company has added another hue to the Ambient Black for the upcoming W205 Walkman phone, which was announced in April.   Other than the hazard of getting it dirty in the first few days of handling it, the Creamy White color does look attractive.  But the new color changes nothing on the inside and the W205’s features remain low end with a 1.3-megapixel camera, 5MB of onboard memory with 2GB M2 card support, 1.8-inch display, and the usual Walkman goodies.  Expected to land in July 2009.

Not to be left off the Google OS wagon, Sony Ericsson has now announced that it wants a piece of the Android cake too.  And not just a Cupcake, but a Donut.  The company already has its fingers in quite a few pies already with Symbian and Windows Mobile handsets, and the addition of an Android 2.0 devices to its future lineup should dispel any rumors that it is thinking about bringing down the number of operating systems on its smartphones.  According to Peter Ang, Vice President of Marketing, Asia Pacific, the reason for the leap to Android 2.0 bypassing the current 1.5 Cupcake is that the 2.0 version “will provide more multimedia support” than the previous versions.  By the way, did everyone on T-Mobile receive their update yet?

I’m really sorry to see companies like Sony Ericsson or Motorola fighting desperately for their survival. Today we hear that Sony Ericsson is in big trouble. According to its CFO has confirmed that the company needs to rais 100 million euros by the end of the fiscal year to keep afloat. Here’s an idea Sony Ericsson, design a hot phone, like, I don’t know, Palm did? It will surely raise that money for you. At least Moto has been playing with our minds earlier this year and we’re waiting for some hot phones this year. What do you guys think about this Sony Ericsson predicament?

Crazy Hoax Spurs Sony To Action!

Sony Ericsson confirms that this email campaign is a hoax. In addition, Sony Ericsson confirms that the Ericsson contact name does not exist.

  • Do you love to take pictures of yourself with your mobile phone? Well if you are, here is something you can check out. All you have to do is take a picture of yourself, smile and upload the raw image at the Sony Ericsson site and you get a chance to receive an unspecified selection of Sony Ericsson goodies.

Contestants in the Sony Ericsson Smile Hunt must upload unretouched images of smiles, captured using camera phones only. The images must have been taken during 2009, and Sony Ericsson will award prizes to three individuals - a Judges Winner, People’s Winner, and Smile Ambassador winner. The People’s Winner will be selected via global public voting on Sony Ericsson’s website, and the winner will receive an unspecified selection of Sony Ericsson products.

Selection for the Judges Winner is rather more complex, with three entries being considered from each eligible country, as nominated by local competition organizers or their media partners if applicable, or by the number of public votes received in countries with no media partner.

From the many dozens of nominees, one winner will then be selected by a panel of five judges. In no particular order, the judges are Sony Ericsson’s senior designer Martin Wezowski, Reuters UK & Ireland Chief of Photography David Viggers, and three well-known photographers - Tony Briggs, Liu Heung Shing and Angela Boatwright.
