It’s official. The Samsung U940 and LG VX9100 are indeed coming to Verizon, after going through the FCC. Samsung’s U940, the CDMA version of F700, may look like the iPhone but can give it a run for its money when we talk about features. The U940 comes with a 5-megapixel camera, HSDPA with speeds up to 7.6Mbps, a “drag and drop” touch interface on a 2.78 inch color display, VibeTonz technology, and a full QWERTY keyboard. There is no information on what sort of operating system this baby might be running. But get ready iPhone, the big players are growing restless.
On the other hand, not much is known about the LG VX9100 other than the tidbit that it might come with EV-DO.
Verizon customers can expect both of these within the first quarter of 2008.

Something I’ve learned with marketing is that you don’t really have to be first, you just have to claim it. That’s what Samsung just did. Although the Nokia N95 was first to come up with 5 Megapixels, Samsung claims the throne with the reasoning that they’re the first to have optical zoom. And true enough, the Samsung SGH-G800 IS the world’s first 5 megapixel phone with 3x optical zoom. The camera functionality features Wide Dynamic Range and face detection. It also has video editing functions and even a mobile blogging feature. There’s no price or release date yet, but for those waiting for a 5-megapixel phone WITH 3x optical zoom, then check back because Mobilewhack will follow-up on the SGH-G800 when news comes out.

Meet Samsung Solid, Samsung’s first strongphone, if you can call it that, with a military IP54 rating, which means its dust, water, and shock resistant.
Features aren’t its strongest forte but it more than makes up for that with a rubber body and a unique SOS feature. Pressing the volume button three times quickly will immediately send a message to a predefined number from its phonebook and the next incoming call will automatically be answered. The built-in flashlight sure sounds handy.
But other than this, the only major feature to talk about would be its FM tuner, which could be useful while you are stuck waiting after your SOS message. GPRS, WAP 2.0, VGA camera, MMS, Java support, and Bluetooth are its other passable features.
All in all, a solid and durable phone for the accident prone.
The Samsung Solid is available exclusively on O2 for £59.99 under its Pay&Go plan.

For those who can’t decide which they like better — alphanumeric or QWERTY keypads and for those who need both for various purposes, you might like what Samsung’s brewing. A patent has been submitted for a design which lets you interchange your keypads between the QWERTY and the standard alphanumeric. The keypads will be engraved on the battery panel and hence, you’ll be changing the battery every time you change keypads. It’ll be interesting to see where this design would bring the next generation of mobile phones.
