openmoko_logo.pngNeo is OpenMoko’s 100% Linux-based open-source phone. The handset which looks like a child’s toy, will get its second version soon, most probably by March to April of 2008. Future plans for the Taiwan-based company include developing open-source handsets extensively, such that two-thirds of the company’s income would be earned from them, with the remaining third earned from collaborations. Speaking of collaborations, OpenMoko is also cooperating with device vendors to produce hardware devices. • Nokia N-Gage at GDC 2008

    Nokia N-Gage

If you are at the Game Developers Conference 2008 in San Francisco, you might have noticed the increasing efforts going on in the mobile gaming space. With a host of games on the N-Gage platform, Nokia is making its presence felt yet again. Some of the new titles include The Dark Knight, SPEED RACER and Super Slam Ping Pong by Glu Mobile; DChoc Café(TM) Solitaire 12-Pack, DChoc Café(TM) Sudoku and DChoc Café(TM) Hold’ Em Poker by Digital Chocolate and Worms World Party by THQ Wireless.

Nokia Games Publishing will also be bringing us Yamake, Disk Dagger and Fallen Idol, a detective adventure game. Anybody know if Digger (yeah, that classic old PC game) is available for mobile phones - specifically the Nokia S60 series? I’ve been looking for it all over.

The GDC 2008 will be on show tomorrow as well, so you can also catch a series of mobile lectures and case studies by Nokia executives. All the action will be at the North Hall of the Moscone Convention Center.

  • Hydrogen-Powered Phone Prototype

    angstrom_phone.JPG

Last month, we reported on the Angstrom Power and Motorola partnership on finding a way to use micro hydrogen as fuel cells for lithium-ion battery replacement. The fuel cells which promised longer battery life were tested on Motorola Slvr L7 phones. Recently, however, Angstrom Powers and Motorola introduced a cell phone prototype powered by hydrogen. A desktop fueling station produces hydrogen from water and stores the particles in a metal hydride storage. These hydrogen molecules will pass through a fuel cell membrane which strips off the electrons to power the phone. Since the hydrogen molecules are procured from water, then finding fuel for the phone is as easy as finding the nearest tap.

  • Apple iPhone SDK: Daylight Soon?

    Apple iPhone

Via The Unofficial Apple Weblog comes news that the iPhone SDK will finally see daylight, after spending the last few months in Apple’s labs. As we saw earlier, the Apple iPhone Opens Up, the SDK will allow developers to write new apps that run on the iPhone platform. These apps will also run seamlessly on the iPod touch (minus those that depend on the cellular network, of course).

There is also another update to the iPhone - version 1.1.4. I am still running 1.1.2 for reasons known only to me, and I don’t plan on upgrading my firmware anytime soon. Anyway, the source of this information, Tiny Code, has been taken down - it now redirects to Apple’s developer website. Quite interesting — I don’t know if Apple’s lawyers had anything to do with it. Stay tuned.

  • Samsung G810 Cell Phone

    Samsung%20G810.JPG

  • Samung i200 Cell Phone

    Samsung%20i200.jpg
Still another new Samsung phone presented during the Mobile World Congress is the Samung i200. It’s a very simple, very basic candybar phone — the kind you’d wonder why companies would bother making. But I’m guessing Samsung has its target market for the i200. The i200 has a
2.3-inch QVGA TFT display, a 2-megapixel camera, EDGE capability, 3G with HSDPA support, and Bluetooth and USB Connectivity. The low-end device runs on Windows Mobile 6 standard.

  • Samsung SGH-E251 Cell Phone

    Samsunf%20E251.jpg

Remember the E250? At MWC this year, along with a gamut of other Samsung phone, the company unveiled the Samsung SGH-E251, which is obviously a derivation of the earlier E250. The E250 was a highly-popular phone, most especially in Asia. I can’t help but think this is stretching the popularity of the model too much. Anyhow, the Samsung SGH-E251 is a triband slider phone with EDGE/GPRS capability, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, 2-inch 128 x 160-pixel resolution TFT display, and a built-in VGA megapixel camera. The difference of the E251 from the E250? A dedicated music key.

The Samsung SGH-L770 is a Quadband slider phone with both GPRS/EDGE and 3G with HSDPA support capabilities. Measuring 102 x 48 x 14.2 mm, it has a 2.1-inch QVGA TFT LCD, with 2 megapixel camera, and Bluetooth and USB connectivity. There’s no official price on this baby yet, but word on the street is that it would be somewhere around ~US$400 and would be available starting April.

  • Nokia has presented a video on their new concept phone, the “Remade.” The idea behind the “Remade” concept is to find out whether it’s actually possible to create an entire phone from 100% recycled materials. This is an effort by Nokia to try and reduce landfills as well as to minimize the need for natural resources. The concept phone was constructed with upcycled plastic bottles and aluminum cans and keypads made of old rubber tires and environmentally friendly technologies such as energy saving graphics. The “Remade” concept is part of Nokia’s endeavor to look at how mobile phones could be made in the future.
