Technology has been known to perk up businesses and this time around, Vocera has unveiled its own batch of smartphones, aiming to assist medical professionals and staff in rendering efficient patient care and flexible mobile communication as well. The Vocera smartphone was jointly developed with Motorola, offering a one-touch voice-user interface running on the Mobile 6.1 operating systems.

With this new device, doctors and clinical personnel will be able to access business applications as well such as clinic system alerts, asset tracking and medical reference. It even allows them to communicate since it has corporate e-mail provisions as well.

Motorola Droid Shows GSM Features

The Droid might be a Verizon Wireless exclusive phone in the USA but that doesn’t mean that Motorola shouldn’t sell in other markets too. After all the Droid is probably going to be one of the best Android phones around and I’m pretty sure that Motorola will want to cash in on all that hotness.

The FCC has revealed exactly such a version of the Droid that could be used all around the GSM world. What’s more interesting is that the GSM Droid has support for AT&T’s WCDMA 850 and 1900MHz bands which also happen to be used by carriers in Canada. Not that Verizon will share the Droid with AT&T any time soon! But Rogers, Bell and Telus will probably want to launch the phone in the following months or, dare we say, in the following weeks?

Will you buy the Droid next week from Verizon or are you waiting for a GSM version of it?

Future WIND Smartphones Get Leaked

In case you haven’t heard about WIND then you should know it’s a new carrier getting ready for the Canadian market. We don’t have that many details about it at this point but it looks like WIND has big plans for the future. Its smartphone lineup has been conveniently leaked so we have a pretty good idea of what to expect from it in the following months.

WIND will launch its 3G network and here are some of the phones it will sell soon: BlackBerry Bold 2 9700, HTC Snap, Huawei U8220 and a QWERTY slider phone from Samsung.

There are no pricing details and launch dates at this point but we’ll keep you in the loop. And if you’re already interested in WIND then you’ll be pleased to know that the new carrier is planning to start everything with three price plans that don’t require any signing of a predetermined contract. Any comments?

We did tell you a little while ago that both Bell and Telus are getting ready to launch the iPhone 3GS in Canada. Those of you that refused to get an iPhone from Rogers can choose one now from Bell or Telus.

And Bell decided to make things even more obvious by launching an iPhone 3GS-dedicated webpage. You can sign up to get more details about the iPhone 3GS launch by following the link below. In other words, Bell hasn’t specified any prices or release dates but it simply confirmed the fact that the iPhone 3GS is coming to its brand new HSPA network.

  • Are you looking for an unlocked HTC HD2 already? The phone will be out in Europe in the following months. First O2 will launch it in the UK this month while Vodafone will launch it in Spain in December. U.S. customers are only going to get it at some point in the first quarter of the next year but that doesn’t mean you have to be waiting that long to get it.

The HD2 will be also available off contract starting with November 11. The unlocked phone will sell for around $740 in the U.K. which is not a bad price considering what the HD2 can do.

Yes, you can purchase the phone and use it in the USA but you will have to settle for EDGE connectivity only. The unlocked HD2 will not be able to offer 3G connectivity if you decide to use it in the USA. Therefore, if you want a 3G HTC HD2 you’ll have to wait until 2010 to purchase one.

O2 to Launch HTC HD2 on October 19

By this time you should already know that O2 is the carrier ready to bring HTC’s latest Windows Mobile phone to the UK. The phone has been officially announced and it’s probably going to be HTC’s flagship Windows Mobile 6.5 for a while. With specs like a Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon processor and a 4.3-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen display the HD2 is definitely a phone worth buying.

According to O2’ customer support, the phone will be available in O2 stores starting with October 19. The price hasn’t been specified at this point so we’ll be back with more details once O2 is ready to launch the phone.

U.S. customers, get ready to wait some more for the HD2! The phone will be available in the USA only in the first quarter of 2010.

Bell has the hottest network right now in Canada, or that’s the general impression for now. The carrier has deployed their HSPA network and now it will be looking for more and more HSPA customers. One of the measures taken to increase its popularity is the introduction of a very special promotion: Bell will offer unlock codes for every new HSPA phone purchased with a new contract. You won’t be able to quit your contract and you will be required to pay a fee for this promotional offer but it’s still good to know that a carrier is willing to unlock a handset so soon after activation . What do you say? Did I just convince you to buy a new phone from Bell?

Almost every single phone that receives any amount of hype is bound to get knocked off by some bootleg Chinese handset manufacturer. One phone we haven’t seen knocked off is the Palm Pre, until now, that is.

What you see above is said Palm Pre knock offd that features both a touch screen and slide out QWERTY keyboard. Additionally, it runs the OPhone OS, analog TV, an FM radio and Bluetooth.

Sounds pretty enticing, huh? If you really want such a knock off, it’ll run you right around $90.

There’s one more company interested in making Android phones, Japan’s Kyocera. The company plans to launch its first smartphone capable of running Google’s OS at some point in next year. And we definitely hope we’re going to see more than one Kyocera phone in 2010. Besides Android plans, Kyocera is also thinking about LTE. Its first dual CDMA/LTE phone is scheduled to arrive in 2011 but we don’t know what platform it will use. Can we assume it’s going to be an LTE Android phone?

    INQ to Launch Spotify Phone

If you’re familiar with the European music service Spotify then you might like a future Spotify-based phone made by INQ. The phone should be launched by Telia as soon as Spotify and INQ finish building it. At this point there aren’t that many details about the future handset but things seem to check out. Both INQ and Spotify are backed by Li Ka-Shing, one of the wealthiest persons on Earth which also happens to be interested in mobile technology and social networking (he’s also one of Facebook’s well known investors.)

We will probably find out more about INQ’s future Spotify phone in the near future, but unless you live in Europe, it’s less likely that you’ll get a chance to be interested in it anytime soon.

That’s right folks, what you’re currently reading is not a mistake of some sort. Bell and Telus will get the iPhone this November since the official Apple partner in Canada will lose its iPhone exclusivity deal next month.

Bell certainly has even more reasons to celebrate as the carrier has deployed its new HSPA network in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics. The iPhone deal comes just in the nick of time although none of the parties involved will admit everything so far. We have no pricing details so far but I bet both Bell and Telus are really eager to announce their subscribers that the iPhone will be available in their stores soon. What about your Rogers? Don’t you have any denial to do regarding the loss of iPhone exclusivity?

It looks like Motorola fans over the pond will be able to enjoy the company’s first Android phone earlier than everyone else. The DEXT is available already in the UK from Orange so go get it while it’s hot. The phone will be available for free if you select a 2-year contract of at least £34.26 per month. For that monthly tariff you will get 900 any network voice minutes, unlimited SMS messages, Orange Maps and anytime Internet browsing.

On comparison, the CLIQ will be available from T-Mobile USA for pre-order on October 19 for $199.99 on contract. Will the CLIQ/DEXT be a hit phone? Do you intend to purchase it?

    Kempler & Strauss W PhoneWatch

There’s a new watchphone in town and it’s not coming from LG. Made by Kempler & Strauss, the W PhoneWatch is even smaller than LG’s GD910 watchphone.

The device comes with a touchscreen interface, 4GB of storage space, microSD support, music and video players, camera with video recording, Bluetooth support and quad-band GSM. The PhoneWatch is available for $199 without a contract. That’s certainly a great price for an entry-level watchphone.

  • LG working together with a wireless testing firm called Anite has completed the first LTE conformance test of LTE phones with both older networks and new LTE networks. The test is pretty important since it assesses how new handsets will handle in actual conditions where an user will be able to use both LTE and 3G services with a single LTE device. The testing also confirms that future LTE devices will work well with “older” 3G networks whenever LTE connectivity is not available. Now we’d just love to see some of those LTE devices out in the open. After all, they will work well on current 3G networks too! Right LG and Anite?

  • This is not the first time we’re showing you this cool hybrid phone capable of handling both cellular and satellite connectivity. We knew the TerreStar Genus was coming and it looks like AT&T is the chosen carrier. The phone has some interesting features like a 2.6-inch touchscreen display, full QWERTY keyboard, WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth. In terms of connectivity the TereStar Genus can handle GSM/GPRS/EDGE and dual 3G connectivity (UMTS/HSDPA) but also Terrestar’s 2.2GHz satellite connectivity. That means you’ll be able to make the switch to satellite whenever AT&T lets you down, and apparently that could happen in 30% of cases. In order for everything to work properly you’ll need to be prepared to get two different plans and not be surprised to see roaming charges add up. That’s right, when you’re going on satellite mode, you’ll be paying roaming charges! The phone will be available at the beginning of 2010 so there’s plenty of time to assess your need for a satellite phone in your life!

  • HTC HD2 Spotted in O2 UK Catalog

The screenshot here comes to prove that HTC’s latest Windows Mobile 6.5 phone is headed to O2 as previously discussed. The phone has already appeared in O2’s UK catalog which is all the confirmation we need! The HD2 or the LEO is supposed to become available anywhere from October 12 to October 26. If you’re going to go look for the catalog, you might be surprised to see it’s not available yet in O2 stores. It’s almost October so you can check back in a few days and actually see the HTC HD2 on printed paper for yourself. And its funny how the phone’s OS is clearly displayed in this leaked shot. Should we assume there’s no TouchFLO 3D like we heard on top of Redmond’s mobile OS?

A new connector is coming to your future cell phones and mobile devices and its solely purpose is to connect said device to HDTVs and display. The Mobile High-Definition Interface Working Group will conceive it soon as various companies have already agreed upon such a bold endeavor. Nokia, Samsung, Toshiba, Sony and Silicon Image will work together to create the new standard. The question is, do we really need a new standard in our lives? After all we already have so many and with Apple’s and Intel’s Light Peak universal connector that’s coming in a couple of years there isn’t much point for devising an HD-only standard. What are your thoughts on the matter?

If the above document snagged by Engadget is to be believed we should be seeing Garmin-Asus’ nuvifone G60 offered by AT&T on October 4th for $299.99 after a 2-year contract.

As you can see, this device will triband HSDPA, Bluetooth, a microSD slot, GPS navigation with preloaded maps (of course) and a 3.2 megapixel camera.

If you’re looking for a full fledged turn-by-turn GPS system and are also on the market for a new cellphone, definitely check the G60 out.
